Title: What Was the First Pony in Your Collection?
Post by: Beth3346 on May 27, 2015, 08:34:27 PM
What or which (if more than one) was the first pony you bought when you started collecting?
For those who are lucky enough to have their childhood ponies, which pony was the first new addition?

Mine was Little Flitter

I got into collecting somewhat by accident. I was on eBay just browsing and I remembered that I loved the My Little Ponies with the wings.  I didn't remember their names but when I was little I had a My Little Pony theme birthday cake that my mom decorated with Summer Wing Ponies.  I did a quick eBay search for My Little Ponies with wings and found a lovely Little Flitter.  I had to have her.

She's still in my collection over 5 years later and will always be mine. Even if I sell all my other ponies I will always keep her.

Don't have a picture, but Minty from the 2007 McDonald's promotion. Got her randomly and ended up wanting the rest of the set. It just went on from there.

Tuneful, left over from my older sister's childhood that I braided the hair of as a kid. Found her in my toys in my old room as a teenager, still braided like I had her. She still has those braids and is top center of my collection.

And because she's special to me I have her MOC on both US and UK cards.

No good photo of my loose one, I need to though.

And then on Ebay in 2000 as a 12 year old I bought Sparkler, who we mailed a personal check for. lol
Thankfully my dad was just like buy whatever you want, I bought a lot of ponies online and we sent checks and money orders, funny to think back on :). I have no idea who came after that.

I got three at once:  Bunches-o-fun, Dibble Dabble, and Coconut Cream.  Even though I was an adult when I finally got them, I had to open the boxes and play with their hair.  I braided a lock of hair on Bunches-o-Fun and she sat in storage for several years like that, but now all three are out on display on the top shelf with their original hair styles, except I let out the braid on Bunches-o-Fun.  It's got a nice subtle crimp to it now.  I kinda like it.

G3-My grandma bought me four, Rainbow dash, Sparkleworks, Star Dasher and Denim Blue, of those Star Dasher is the only one I have left.
G4-Bought two Diamond Mint and Lira Heartstrings. I still own Diamond Mint

I don't remember, but I know my first pony was one I bought at a store.  Based on the release dates it was Pinkie Pie, Sunny Daze, Sweetberry, Wysteria, or Kimono.  I have a feeling it was Kimono.  My parents feel it was Pinkie Pie.

My first childhood pony was Gusty. I started collecting again about 15 years ago, both ebay and garage sale hunting and I can't remember who my first purchase was. They all went back into storage and I got into collecting again in 2012 I think, my first purchase for myself was Zecora (had bought lots for my daughter).

My first ponies that are in my collection now are Styling Strands Rarity and Styling Strands Fluttershy. My bf bought them for me for Valentines Day. My mom says that my first childhood pony was SS Shady. She recalls my dad wondering why I chose the one pink pony with bright neon hair. I had a tendency to like "weird" color combos as a kid.

Mine was technically a G4. I was introducted to Moondancer and Seashell when I was a kid, but they were my aunts! I broke down into buying ponies when the blindbags came out as I had to have the glitter Rainbow Dash. Then G4 lyra brushable was released and I just loved her colors so I bought! Next was Sunny Rays, Cherry Berry, Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy, more blindbags, then from there it got out of control! Now im wanting G1 ponies!

G3 Kimono picked out from Target because she came with a free video. I was a sucker for promotional items  :P
Sadly, I have a temper and chewed her foot when her hair wouldn't brush, but picked up an upgrade at Value Village . I still have her though, and she's the wise grandmother to all my G3s.
I quit collecting a few times after that, and my re-entry ponies each time were G3 Tangerine Twinkle, G3 core 7 Sweetie Belle, and G4 Applejack. They're all special to me for their own reasons  :lovey:

As a child my first pony was Cherries Jubilee. She was brand new from the shop, I remember picking her out with my mum (She approved of my choice). After that the majority of my childhood ponies were secondhand, from the local market or handmedowns from my cousin.
Then in March 2007 I was reminiscing about My Little Pony with some of my friends while we were on holiday- we were sitting in a Wetherspoon's!- I suddenly decided to see if people sold them on ebay. So I did a search and loads came up!!! Top of the list was Masquerade, so I bid on her and won!! The first of many for my re-collection. My mum had kept all our childhood ones, so I was able to put them together. I was so excited about it, and still get that same feeling when I look at my ponies. They make me so happy!!!

Years before I started collecting I found a Lanard at a White Elephant Stall, she came home with me even though I professed a great hatred for all things girly. I had owned pony toys in the past (never MLP though) but she's special in my mind. I customised her and she's still in my fakie herd today.

The first ponies to actually start my collection were the G4 Blind Bag Collector Set, I received them as a gift from my girlfriend.

I can't recall who I bought first myself? I think I bought myself some more blind bags, dipping my toes into G4, then I bought some brushables? Then I found this forum and branched out into G1 and G3... G2 has some representation in my herd as well.

My first childhood ponies were Firefly and Sand Dollar.
I started officially collecting just as G3s were coming out, and by chance I found a Powder at a second hand shop. Shortly after that came the first few G3s.

Technically my first MLP toys were the first (I believe) line of G4 McDonald's ponies. However, back then it was much less about wanting MLP toys, and more wanting something to represent the characters I love from the FiM show. Still counts, I guess?

The first I got because I loved her as a toy was G3 Jazz Matazz. Since I got her in her original packaging, she also came with G3 Baby Wave Catcher.

I actually had a first 3. I can't for the life of me remember my very first G4 item(could've been anything, really.) but my first brushables were the CMC that came in the flower fillies set. Still have them and they're still cute as buttons.

This is actually kind of a hard question for me because the line between where buying ponies purely as toys turned into collecting ponies is pretty blurred.  I have just kind of continuously bought them since the beginning of G3 lol.  My first G3 pony when I was a kid was Tink-a-Tinka-a-Too, though.  My first G3.5 was the first wave Toola Roola.  Then my first G4 was the first wave Applejack.  My first G1 was Milky Way, and my first G2 was Bright Berry.

Milky Way probably marks the beginning of when I really started collecting because that's when I joined the Arena and really started to learn a lot about ponies.  So I suppose Milky Way was the first in my collection even though she was nowhere near my first pony!

I still have my childhood ponies and the first one I ever got was baby Northstar, which I renamed Silver as Firefly was called Silver in the Swedish dub of the episode of the Midnigth Castle. I obviously didn't have Silver but baby Northstars colouring was close enough.

When I started to collect.. if I remember correctly I won two auctions from the same seller. I think Moondancer was the first one to end. The second one was Glory with baby which ended a few minutes later. The seller was nice to send along baby Moondancer as well which made my first pony and auction experience very positive. This was back in 2005.. I can't believe it's been ten years

@Shimmlight - the UK card is the purple one with borders. All the ponies in the early 1990s over here in the UK had coloured bordered cards in that same kind of style, whilst the American cards did not :)

I see this question in three stages. My first childhood pony was Rainbow pony WINDY, who I got, probably at Christmas 1984. She is the middle pony in this picture:
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

She has never stood up properly. My earliest memory of her is giving her a shower in a maroon easter egg box when I was about three. She was my first pony, but it was only when I got my second pony, Baby Blossom, that I had two and so could really play with them. From there it took off.

My first re-collection ponies...hrm. This one is more complicated. I wrote to Hasbro UK in 1995, and they sent me 2 teeny weeny ponies as freebies, but they were both ponies I had already. We bought a Hairdo pony (Beautiful Bows) from them direct, and also I think Baby Lollipop might have come from them? However, I really count the serious re-collecting as being the CAR BOOT SALE! I actually have it written down in an old diary, so I know that we first went carbooting in July, 1995 (I was 13). The first carboot ponies we found were Lickety Split and Parasol. I don't have pictures of the Lickety Split though I do still have her (I have a small Lickety army, actually), but Parasol is the paler of these two, on the left:

The third phase of recollecting is online trade. My first online trade pony was received on November 17th, 1997 (yes, I really do have a diary for that, too!) She came from Pinkember (Helen Kiker) in America, and she was the Twinkle Eyed pony, Mimic! My sister had Best Wishes from the same trade, just in time for her birthday. Here is my Mimic:

The first pony I bought myself online after we had the internet at home (rather than the library) was in summer 1998, it was the adult Sea Pony,Sea Breeze and she cost me a total of $9 ($5 for the pony, and $4 postage) which I sent in cash (!?). She came from ebay and I persuaded Dad to join ebay entirely to buy her because I had NEVER seen a y3 Sea Pony in real life before and I was so excited that they really existed and weren't just pictures in my fact file. Ironically her shell is still the only one we are missing, but here she is anyway:

In terms of other generations, I know my first G2 ponies were Berry Bright and Sky Skimmer, also around 1997 from stores. My first G3 pony was Rainbow Dash, who I graduated with in July 2003 and who was bought for me by a friend for that purpose. My first G4 ponies were Rarity, Applejack and the purple pegasus with yellow hair and flowers, and I bought them on holiday in Finland, when visiting Porvoo in July 2011.

hahahah Yes, this for me too. I got hooked with G4 blind bags, bought a few G4 brushables, not many (My fiance has a hoard...) The only brushable Ive kept is rainbow FS rarity.
My first G1 was Windy- came in poor condition on ebay...should have complained but I was too excited for my first! I quickly upgraded with one bought here on the arena

My fist g3 where cotton candy cafe minty and star swirl.

My fist g2 was tipsy tulip.

My first ever g1 as a baby sea pony 'baby water lilly' but this one dosen't count as a collection.

I actually got UK first because it's all I could find, then I finally got a hold of the US like right after that, mere weeks (funny because I waited a long time for her to pop up). Each to their own, I guess. I admit that I like the early US cards, although not as much as I like the equivalent UK ones (I would rather have even Powder etc on the cards they had in Scandinavia, beause they are UK style, than the US one if I could, because much as I love the US cards, they're tied too much to pose.

The ones from Tuneful's year I really don't like very much at all xD. They're too "flashy" for me, and I don't like the idea of SHS with earrings on bubble cards instead of in boxes. I'd be scared if I had one that they'd get broken.

I like the borders, but then I grew up with them! I don't find them meh, especially since they meant we still had individual stories for each pony right up till 1993 ;)

HOWEVER, 1987 was an exceptional year for pony art on UK cards, and, in my humble UK-biased opinion,  this card has to have a special mention.

I think it's my favourite early UK card. I don't have the Mountain Boy one any more, though that's quite pretty as well. We did have a lot of sets with borders, but only ones from about 1990-1992, so barely 3 years of 11 or 12 overall.

The thing is that those are just the more commonly found ponies MOC so they're the ones people think of as UK cards. Especially since somany have come out of Greece in the last few years too.

There are some really pretty early cards that don't get to see the light of day very often, like the PNP baby sea pony cards with the story written in the seashell on the back.

I guess that for me "meh" is a bit of a generalisation.

And, you know, if your UK carded Tuneful is too boring, you can always send her to live with me...*innocent*

That's ok, her being Tuneful is enough to make up for the boring card. :D

Being a MOC collector I've still seen a little of everything but yeah, I do dislike that border one the most. Still, others have kind of funky artwork to me and I outright dislike the seapony cards. Whereas there aren't really any US cards I dislike. Didn't mean to offend. :P I kind of like that you are pretty much UK only MOC collector and I'm pretty much US only. :) Not for competition reasons, lol, I just feel like we're the same sort of person but we prefer our own more.

I think you're right - it is fundamentally about the things we remember and grew up with. I don't just collect UK MOC, I have some early US ones and a couple of European ones too, but with US carded ponies, it's if they take my fancy or have some connection (ie a pony that was in comics here as a kid but not sold here, if you know what I mean?).

Unfortunately the early UK ones are usually rarer/more expensive than most of the early US ones because of supply/demand, and the US names won't do for ponies I had as a kid, which is why I never kept my MOC Sugarberry. I don't regret it, because I didn't have Sugarberry, I had Strawberry Fair and so I'm holding out for her ;). And, although her box is French, it's why I never bought a MIB Tropical Breeze till this year, because I was waiting for one that had the same box my childhood one had. (It only took about 16 years...xD). I know I'll never get some of my childhood ponies MOC because of who they are, so I am careful to pick the UK MOC ponies that I want the most. To put it in context, I've seen more MOC Mimics come up online than I've seen 1987 TE ponies on the UK white card.

I used to have a bunch more US carded ponies but sold a lot of them because they were on US card and I thought US people would value them more than  me. The only one I regret parting with at all is 2nd release Applejack, because I still don't have a loose y3 Applejack xD. Little art details on some of the US cards do irk me, though - like Masquerade and I think, Whizzer, being on the front of Mimic's card, when they weren't sold with Mimic's set.

I did notice your two Tunefuls aren't the same, though. The red hair variation makes them different ponies xD so worth keeping even with the borders.

I don't really mind if you don't like UK cards, or if you don't like a particular style of UK card. If you don't, it means one less person trying to buy them xD. I just felt it was a bit of a harsh generalisation based on one particular style, given that a lot of the early UK cards are as decorative or more so than the US equivalents, just different. I like the border cards better for some sets than others, because I had a lot of those ponies as a kid and they are the cards I mostly kept because I was old enough to do so (including Tuneful's!) but I'm not a huge fan of the 1993-4 pink card style. I don't like the artwork or the collective stories they have.

And now to get back on topic, I'm still looking for my first pony MOC ;) Windy is not a hard pony to get MOC. UK carded Windy apparently is. Sigh ;)

Yep, that's cause I actually dislike almost all of them and do find them bland or a little weird, so overall 'meh' for me. That's just how I've always felt about UK cards and boxes. I don't buy any of them, I've always liked all the US ones much more. The colors aren't my taste, a lot of the artwork is wonky and not ideal to me, I'm not sure. Even though Tuneful would not have been a pony I liked normally, since she was my first pony I really enjoy having both the UK and US cards. Though I'm not sure I'd have bought the UK one if I found the US first, I think it's a nice tribute now to the pony that started it all for me. I found Tuneful in my room and fell in love. I love the green card she is on though, it's so fitting for a loud pony like her.

I only have Greek Windy MOC, she is gorgeous.

In 1997 I was walking past a toy section in a department store and saw the G2s.  Agonized for a half hour over who to buy, finally came away with Sky Skimmer.  Shortly thereafter I discovered ebay and bought my first G1 lot: Glory, Sparkler, and Windy.

The blind bags were what got me, too. The first one I got was Twilight from Wave 1. I got her as a compromise since I couldn't find Pinkie. It was about 3 years ago.

I remember telling myself when I first started watching FiM, "I like this show, but I'm not going to buy a bunch of little girl toys."

lol :)

My first ponies were Glory and Peachy; I got them secondhand in the late 1980s when I was about three. I was playing with them in the secondhand store and when the employee saw how much I liked them she gave them to me and my mom for free. :) And the rest is history . . .

My first childhood pony was Medley.  I honestly don't remember who was my first pony when I started actually collecting in my teens.  MLP wasn't on the shelves at the time so I was picking them up at garage sales.  I do remember that Wysteria was my first G3.

When I first got into MLP I bought a Playful Pony sized Applejack (in fact, that's her in the pic for my avatar) Later when I decided I wanted to start collecting the first pony I got was Moondancer, she was in pretty rough condition but I didn't really know it at the time.

The first pony I bought with my own pocket money when I was about 12 years old was G3 Minty, I don't have her anymore but I do still have Cloud Climber and Desert Palm. When it came to replacing my early childhood ponies (which were all hand-me-downs), the first one I got was Posey; she was always my favourite (and still is but don't tell the others!)

Still have my childhood ponies that were gifted to me. My first pony I got when I really became a collector was the Rarity brushable for the first Valentine's Day after FiM started airing.^^ I had asked my husband to get her for me.

My very first childhood pony was Flippity Flop, but I no longer own her. When I got into collecting, I was 12 and my "first" pony as a more serious collector was Brights Brightly, I have her to this day, she's sitting on my shelf. My first pony when I got back into MLP recently was Minty because I randomly remembered how much I wanted her as a kid and started hunting for her :)

When I started collecting again my first pony was G3 Sno Glo.

Pardon? O.O

XD.

That's right. :P I need more color and flashiness than the UK cards!

Maybe not so meh after all...?

Oh I love that card *__* Honestly I think that's one of the best backcards in the whole of G1. It's just so beautiful

As I came into the fandom around the beginning rush of G4, mine was one of the mane six though I can't remember which. (Mom was a sweetheart and I got a brushable once I finished each of my six finals that year haha. It was a good motivator.)
I know shortly after I got the BAB Pinkie Pie though!

My first pony was a G1 Twinkler. I loved her so much that I brushed all of her tail out. I then made a replacement tail out of craft floss and glitter nail polish. Guess that's what started me on re furbishing and customs, and then my herd grew and grew and is still growing! :D

When I got into collecting, the first I purchased was G4 fluttershy. I wanted to have a G4 from the show so badly, and it evolved from there!

My first when I started collecting as an adult was Colorswirl Springy, I think?  The pink one, anyway.  I found her at a flea market and I'd never seen any bride pose ponies before, but I *knew* those were My Lille Pony eyes!  I bought her and looked her up online...and that same day pulled out all my childhood ones and started cleaning them up!

Morning Glory sat on a shelf in my workroom staring at me.  I wondered why Anita didn't have any G2s.  After all, Morning Glory had the sweetest face......  Now I have about 150 G2s and I love each and every one!

My very first pony was Bluebelle - the UK version that came with the heart jewellery case with pony hair clips inside. I still have her and her accessories   She was quickly followed by Butterscotch with the UK Gymkhana set - both were gifts from mom when I was little (I'm showing my age now  :yikes: )  I have pics somewhere in my photobucket ...  :awake:

I didn't like G2  to start with but they grew on  me and I have quite a few now. I collect all gens though G1 will always be my fave
