Title: The Ponies you didnt have.
Post by: ajmeier55 on July 08, 2014, 03:53:35 PM
The ponies I had as a child will always remain some of most beloved and when mine were thrown out in my teen years I was pretty upset. So as an adult collector they were among the first ones I hunted down and had to have. But what about the ponies you never had? The ones you stared at in the pamphlets or in the toy aisles at the store. My favorite ponies I never had as a child were Gusty Sparkler Princess Tiffany and Baby Sugarberry. I can remember as a child being envious of my one cousin who I played ponies with the most had Sparkler (although when we played together she always let me have her) another cousin had Tiffany and I wanted her soo much. Gusty called to me from the pamphlet and was asked for at Christmas a few times. And Baby Sugarberry....well her mom was one of my favorites and I really wanted her baby to go with her. So what about the rest of you? Who do you remember pining for when you were a child? And did you ever get that pony or did you have to wait till you were an adult collector?

I'm very sorry to hear that your ponies were thrown out when you were a teenager!!  I had a tragic loss in my early 20's of my childhood and so much more being destroyed/lost/sold without my knowledge or consent - thankfully my sister had our ponies - but I still went out and hunted down my favorites as well from when I was a kid.
Who did I really want but never got? Probably the flutters, honestly. We thought we had *so many* ponies (60ish between us two) and I don't remember looking at ponies and staring longingly the same way I stared and plotted for LPS (G1) though I know there were some that I was anxious to get. I never cared about Megan but if a mommy had a baby or vice versa, I wanted her! I didn't realize (somehow) that baby Moondancer had a mommy and that Milky Way had a baby! Well, that's been taken care of as an adult...and now I'm pretty much after any pony I can get my hands on for a reasonable price!
Did you ever get your Princess Tiffany? She was my first Princess Pony and very well loved. I have a couple extra of her I might be convinced to part with. maybe...lol!

I'm so sorry to hear about your losses :( I really wanted a lot of the characters from the cartoons, but I pined for the princess ponies the most.  I had the purple princess with the eyelashes, but my friend had three princess ponies, one from the first set and two from the second, and I wanted at least one more than anything else.  I now have the whole set, just need a few accessories <3

Yup, I have replaced every pony I had that was lost to me, I did have a few that weren't in the basement that were saved. I started my adult collection intending to only replace those lost to me and a few that I wanted as a child.....but I didn't stick to it haha. In fact im not even sure how many I have right now. I did get Tiffany. I replaced my pony castle as that was one of the things that got thrown. I also got the paradise estate which was the one playset I really wanted as a child. All I can say are ponies are addictive.  :)

I'm very sorry to hear that..:(..

But of course the pony I pined for since I started collecting was Pinwheel....When I first saw her I instantly fell in love; after I found out she was hard to get I just gave up on looking for her. I always lost out on ebay listings and auctions because of her high price. I still haven't gotten her to this day. I may have gotten a few of my grails sure, but Pinwheel would be lovely to have. *sighs* One day  :lovey:

For me that was the set of baby ponies that had baby sugar berry in it, I sent the order away but they ran out, and I was given some other ponies instead. I am still looking for all six of them to this day.

Baby Glory.  I wanted Baby Glory, and I wanted her accessories.  She was at the top of every Christmas/birthday/Easter/whatever wishlist I "outgrew" ponies for the few years I switched to something else during high school.  My mom looked for her for the better part of 10 years, but once she was out of the stores, she was gone for good.  The second I got to college, I discovered the internet, and the pony community.  The very first thing  I did when I found the original My Little Pony Trading Post(back when it wasn't even a message board yet) was to post an ad looking for Baby Glory.  It took me over a year to get my hands on one, and I even got her accessories.

This Christmas I *finally* tracked down a MIB one.  Wind Whistler was another one I *desperately* wanted as a kid but never got.  Wind Whistler usually had a place right beside Baby Glory on my wishlists.   I tracked her down MOC  many years ago, and due to a bidding war with the premier MIP collector on ebay at the time(a girl who regularly outbid the Delaneys on MIP auctions), she ended up being the most expensive pony I ever bought.  That's saying something!  I have ended up with my fair share of MOC/MIB ponies, but Baby Glory and Wind Whistler were the only two ponies I ever hunted for MIP.

You just have to look at my nickname to know who my grails were! SnB were the two ponies i wanted since i first saw them at age 7,  sitting in a commercial and absolutely fell in love with their adorable pose and blazes! I never got them...
Then, Christmas 2012, I received a little package which looked a *tad* beat up and sad. A note was attached to it that said something like "I'm very sorry, the elves only just found this present for you under the seat of the sleigh..." When i opened the package and saw the two of them staring up at me I burst into happy tears and couldn't even speak! I'd NEVER been so happy, and my mom and dad (yeah...my DAD  ) were crying, too! I'd wanted them for exactly 30 years!!
I've put it in my will that i'm to be buried or cremated with them :) they're the biggest symbol of my father's undying love for me, and I will keep them forever because of that :)

One pony that I remember well (which is rare for me! :P) was a pony that my childhood BFF had, the Sweetheart Sister Daisy Dancer. I remember staring at her fluffy, curly purple hair in awe, and loving her cute little skirt, too! I don't remember wanting her particularly badly, but I remember thinking how beautiful she was.

I have to agree with goddessofpeep: Baby Glory was my #1 childhood grail and the first pony I hunted down when I discovered eBay in '97. My neighborhood had Baby Glory when I was little, and I secretly hoped she would outgrow ponies and give her to me (we were the same age, but when you're a little kid this seems like a logical possibility).

Oh my, yes, these were my two childhood grails, too! If only we'd known each other, we could have set on a worldwide search together.

I wanted them so so desperately. And not only did I never get them, I never even SAW them. I didn't get into MLP until very late 1984, and Bubbles and Seashell weren't really on my must-have list until it was way too late to find them in a store. And I LOOKED. Once we went to a mall in a small town and they had a lot of older ponies that had never sold. I remember thinking "could Bubbles and Seashell be here???" But alas, no. That was around 1989.

Fast forward to 1998, which was really a world away from 1989--I was now in college. At this point I'd gotten rid of all my childhood ponies except one. I was too grown for MLP, right? I went to an attic sale with a friend. In the toy section I spied . . . a basket of ponies. I casually sifted through them for old times sake . . . and on the bottom of the basket (I still remember this so clearly) I caught a flash of lavender and green stencil seashells. I COULD NOT BELIEVE IT. I reached all the way down and pulled out one of my two childhood grails--Seashell. She had a bushy tail and some play wear but otherwise so pretty. And only twenty-five cents! SOLD.

Within six months, I'd more or less put together my dream childhood collection (the "Classic Twelve" from Year 2) including BUBBLES, who I purchased off eBay. And to this day I still can't believe I own them. They were truly worth waiting for! And Bubbles' green flower brush is very favorite accessory of all time.

Hm... ponies I always wanted but never got... yeah there were a few. My first grail ever was Fizzy. I  saw her in a store when I was 5yo and immidiately fell in love with her. Never got her and never met somebody who had her. Oh and I always wanted a Princess Pony. I often met other girl who had at least one Princess and well... yeah, I got Euro Princess Sparkle, the glittery one with the crown. Wasnt exactly what I wanted lol.
And then all those pictured in the sticker collecting album released by Ehapa : Firefly, Blossom, Glory, Tickle, Medley... I got this album when I was 6yo and collected each and every sticker. Still have it <3 When I started collecting as an adult I first thought "I will stop collecting when I have all ponies from that album" ... yeah, 10 years later now I still collect MLP lol.

I wrecked myself pinning for confetti as a kid. I had gotten starflower and saw the beautiful white pony with rainbow hair in the pamphlet and just about lost it. I searched for her everytime I got enough allowance or birthday money, but bever found her! She was one of the first ponies I purchased in 1997 from the trading post!

I had about twenty ponies as a kid, maybe a few more. They were thanks to my sister, whom i shall not go into discussion about today, they were all about to be thrown out or given to good will. My dad was able to intravene and so 98% of my child hood herd was saved, thanks to a deep dark attic and his old foot locker.
So not to long ago when i got back into them.. i was able to brave the heat, dark and dust of 20 years and bring them back out.
They were still there... but some of the ones from my child hood were damaged, Glory and Firefly had lost their symbols and yellowed,  sundance had frizzy hair and cancer spots, SOME one ( read nephew ) had nearly chewed off poor sparklers horn! but most were able to be saved. ( i till have those girls and wont part with them but I did recently get some upgrades )
how ever there were many that we were never able to get , due to where we lived or money issues, i wasnt able to have very many. So there were several i wanted, Gusty and Heart throb , and ALL of the brush n grow ponies fall into this catergory.
I have since been able to get these ladies, even managing to get my claws on my grail Hollywood.
So  yah.. then someone made the mistake of showing me that twilight sparkle matched powder and i was DOOMED.
hehe.

I don't remember looking at pamphlets and such... My parents always made me throw away packaging as soon as the toy was unpacked (we have home movies of birthdays and Christmases of me whining and asking to keep the boxes of all my toys! Mom's lucky I didn't turn into a MIB collector because of the trauma, lol.)

I absolutely loved Wind Whistler in the cartoon when I was a wee tot, though. I think it's the MLP Movie where Megan hugs her? Man, that upset me as a little girl, I was so jealous. Wind Whistler's the only one I remember specifically wanting.

Overall I just always wanted more ponies :p

See, I don't remember ever wanting for any particular ponies.  Almost *all* of my ponies were thrifted.  I was a bit late into G1 as a kid, as I was an '87 baby and by the time I was cognizant to play with ponies, around 91-92, G1 was pretty much over.  In fact, I only remember getting ONE pony new.  Sweet Talker in purple.  The last year.  I remember my dad taking her out of the packaging and putting batteries in her!

All of my ponies got tossed out, unfortunately. . . By my dad of all people. . .  But I remembered my favorites being SHS Twinkler, Whizzer and Wind Whistler ( my bath ponies, and for some reason Wind Whistler never lost her flocking ), Star Glow and Caramel Crunch.  I also had Princess Primrose and Royal Blue, for sure.  I know if I think real hard, I might be able to name a bunch of others.  I had one of those rare pearly mermaid ponies, and some of the tropical babies, too.  Yet, I haven't had any desire to fully recollect everything I had.  Just a few ponies that were particularly meaningful.

I didn't have many brand new ponies, mostly we got them second hand from market stalls. Me and my sister used to play ponies with our two older cousins, they had quite a few. When my oldest cousin outgrew them, she divide hers between us, but unfortunately my cousin ended up with Mummy and Baby Lemondrop and Baby Applejack, so those were three I always really wanted, which I now have :-) I don't know what happened to the ponies my other cousin had, she never passed them on to us :'(.
Also, I had a few of the My Little Pony magazines, and in there they used to show pictures of peoples collections, which were just awesome! So many ponies!
I had a couple of annuals, so most of the other ones I wanted were from there, the Big Brothers, the Twice as Fancies, and the Newborn Twins were ones I particularly remember. Basically I wanted any pony I could get my hands on! But those I particularly remember liking the look of.
I remember seeing the Windy Wings/Summer Wings in the shop, but wasn't allowed to get any, but can't remember any particular one. Ah, if I could turn back time!.....

I honestly can't remember when I got my first pony/ponies but I think I was around 6-7 yrs old. I know I "inherited" some MLP stuff from one of my older cousins; like Dream Castle and the Baby Buggy. Probably a few ponies too but I can't quite remember. My childhood favorite has always been Strawberry Surprise (until I gave her a horrible haircut DESPITE knowing it would not grow out again! Now I have a prettier collectible version of her but my childhood copy still SMELLS like strawberries!)

But anyways, the ponies I didn't have but did want are the ones I remember better from my childhood.  My bestie had five younger sisters so their MLP collection were more extensive than my 6-7 ponies. I remember wanting quite a few of her ponies but the two that stand out in my mind are Sweet Notes (which is still her favorite pony) and.... *pause for dramatic effect* .... SURPRISE TWIN PONY!!!
I wanted it soooo badly but I have a faint memory of my mom telling me it was too expensive (at least here in Sweden) and I probably didn't remember to put on my Christmas/birthday wish list so obviously it wasn't the most important thing at the time. Instead I got a Steffi Love doll with a turnable tummy that produced two tiny twin babies (I lost track of them pretty quickly.)

Sadly, I still do not own a Surprise Twin Pony... *sighs*

Although I did not have a lot of ponies as a little girl, I dont actually remember pining over any particular pony. In case it was a youthful forgotten memory, I asked my mum...she said "what you wanted you got..." Initially I thought I was spoilt before she said "but you didnt really want ALL the ponies until you were an adult".

Some of these stories are so sweet   ^.^

When I was little the pony that I most wanted but didn't have was Sugarberry.  My friend had her and I thought she was soooo beautiful.  So of course now I have her  ;)

Now maybe I can add my own cute story.  As a child, I had received one of the princess ponies (I think princess Primrose) for Christmas.  From her packaging I cut out all the pictures of the princesses and used string to make them into tree ornaments.  Well, Tiffany was my favorite and years later when my parents wanted to get rid of my "ornaments" I refused to let her be thrown away!  I STILL HAVE that little cardboard ornament.  And now I have princess Tiffany too

LOL  Your mum sounds a lot like my mom.  :)  I don't recall pining over any particular pony, but I do remember getting every pony I specifically asked for.  Ponies are all I ever asked for, and even if I wasn't asking for a certain pony you could bet I'd be thrilled to get it!  I generally had more ponies than my friends did (they had other toy interests, of course) and I don't remember really playing ponies with any of them, so I don't think I was exposed to enough I didn't have to really be jealous!

I do recall desperately wanting Up UP & Away after seeing her in a commercial.  I thought she had beautiful white hair over her dark body like a palomino and I remember being gutted when I got her and she had pink hair.

When I was little I had alot of ponies. I had the dream castle and the show stable. I think I had the pretty parlor too. Though the most ponies I really loved or played with was mommy surprise and baby surprise. I had baby surprise's accessories. though I may not have all of them loose. Flash forward when I was a teenager. I gave all my ponies away to two other little girls that were neighbors  because I thought I was too old for ponies. I lost my childhood surprise and baby probably everything else.
I didn't know what I lost until all the ponies were gone. However, I did save for two ponies Twinkler and Curly Locks probably because they were in Surprise's pose. I dug them up out of my lower closet. Found Medley on ebay and the rest is pony history. Eventually I got baby surprise and Mom again. I was able to even get Surprise non so soft MOC and baby surprise MOC. So I they are apart of my Surprise army.

Caramel Crunch!!!

She is the pony that got me into collecting as an adult. As a kid, a friend of mine had her and I just wanted her sooo badly, she was bright pink and smelt like, well freaking amazing.. and those curls.. ughh..adorable!  I got given the pony collectors book, kinda a kicthy thing for my coffee table at work and I thought damn, I'm gonna buy a caramel crunch.. and thats just rolled the ball into what is now about 250 G1 ponies..

I actually had quite a heard as a child(spoilt, very very spoilt) My mum keep them over the years for me.. I thought I would keep them for my daughter if I ever had one.. (funny, now there is now way she is getting onto the G1s.. she can get some of those big head googly eyed girls that they make now - If I ever have a daughter)

I share this photo way too often, I'm sure alot of you have seen it already.. but I'm really happy and proud to have all my childhood girls (ah hem, and boy Sorry Quaterback) still!

I remember I wanted pretty much the ones I had from my pamphlet, but the one and only was G1 Princess Sparkle... I would stare at her image for hours and wish how much I would adore having her. But it never happened, since G1s for me were short-lived, hard to find and G2s came quickly... So I never had her and eventually forgot about it.

Years later (and I mean only about 3 years ago or so), I became a collector officially and started buying stuff on Ebay. And then, I saw her for sale. Won her over and felt over the moon when I got her. After years and years, I finally had the pony I've wanted so much as a child. She really is my grail and I feel so happy and proud to finally own her :)

Similar thing happened with G1 Hair-do Bangles. She was the first pony I bought on Ebay !! I'm so so so happy to own her too :D

I had one very desired Firefly when I was a child, I took her to school the next day and she was stolen  and my parents didn't want to buy me another, obviously. When I thought about collecting, a friend told me her husband have some ponies from childhood and she gave them to me and...there she was, Firefly. Another one I wanted and never had was Bowtie, lucky me, she's quite popular and easy to find now

I got my childhood ponies as hand-me-downs from a friend, and for whatever reason, they gave me a bunch of old pamphlets too. One had pictures of I think all the ponies released in '89, and I remember really wanting any of the Big Brothers more than any of the others. The fact that they were in an episode helped too. I guess I just liked the design and novelty of having a boy pony because none of them in particular stood out; I'm not sure I even payed attention to their symbols.

Strangely, even though I've been collecting almost continuously, I never got a Big Brother until a few years ago, when a friend send me one as a surprise. I was pretty excited, and have a few now ^_^

Minty. I wasn't 'allowed' to have her because my sister had her. Once I finish replacing my original G1 collection (also donated or thrown out from under me as a teen), I'm getting Minty. My sis wasn't very nice and not only was I not allowed to play with Minty but she flaunted her in front of me. :(

I think my problem is I didn't have any ponies of my own when I was a child. My cousin had SO many and she never wanted to hang out with me so when we'd visit she'd leave and go play with neighborhood friends and leave me alone at the house with all our aunts and uncles. Her mom (my aunt) would get the ponies down and let me play with them. I had so much fun and we went on great adventures I loved them so much. But my family never had money so toys were just something we didn't get. As we got older we did get toys but I still never got any ponies. Its like my inner child is trying to make up for that. Chief was my best buddy so I have a super strong attraction to him and catch myself swooning at the one I own now still. :3

I must have told this story a million times over, but Galaxy was my childhood favourite in the animated series. However, I never owned the toy, partially for the obvious reason that (to my knowing) TEs were never sold in Finland. As a result, my trusty DnP Player played the part of "Galaksi."

To this day, I have not owned a standard Galaxy. Last year, I paid 3 € for a Spanish one (!) whom I sold. For a nirvana I don't really care much about, she was just too valuable to keep. I eventually want a standard one but seemingly never get across to buying (you know, "there will always be another one").
