I am looking forward to this. I didn't have any hope for Sofia the First when I heard about that and I quite like that show (it's a guilty pleasure show for me, hehe), so I have faith that this one will be good too. For some reason, I could imagine The Lion Guard being something like a "animal/lion version of Sofia the First" as far as cameos go.

Heh in my little headcannon, Kopa doesn't "exist" because (prior to TLK2) Zira killed him, thus enraged Simba and he exiled her and the other rebel lionesses to the Outlands.
But before I read what his name was, I thought it would be Kopa in the pic.

I just saw this on facebook. I really don't know how I feel about this. :/ I loved the first 2 movies and I just feel like they need to leave TLK be. 1 1/2 was bad enough...
I won't entirely dismiss it until I see it, but I have my doubts. Especially since it's going to be targeted at preschool age kids. Not a good sign.

And am I the only one who really wants to see a movie based around Scar and Mufasa as cubs? I like Simba and Nala and all... but they seem to be getting all the attention!

A HONEY BADGER!!! I have to watch this. I hope they meet a pangolin at some point too.

The idea really intrigued me at first, but I know I sound shallow, but the fact it's pandering it pre-schoolers kind of makes me think it won't be that great. The first LK was so epic....

I'm not too worried. I enjoy the shows Sophia the First and Doc McStuffins and find them really cute so I have faith that they will do TLK justice!!!

In the link, I saw the pic of what looked like Mufasa as a cub and I thought "Oh, finally a film about Mufasa and Scar's backstory!" Then I read the page and thought "Darn! It's about Simba and Nala having another kid!" I will check out the film and show. They look interesting.

I also enjoy Sofia and Doc so this could be really good. If nothing else, my best friend's son is right in the target age. He'll be 2 in July. You better believe that he will be getting the toys from his "Auntie Mufasa" (that's me!). :D

Not sure how familiar you are with the Epic Mickey games, but me and a friend had our headcanon made up shortly after the game was announced - Kopa was forgotten and wound up in Wasteland, living in the deepest part of Ventureland. Hence his sudden disappearance, and Simba's belief that Zira had killed him :P
Although on the subject of a prequel for Mufasa and Scar... Now that would have been amazing. I would have loved to see the film 'end' just as Simba's presentation begins.

I'm mildly disappointed it's going to be targeted to such a young audience, but I have little doubt that they'll pull it off. Disney generally know what they're doing. :satisfied:

I know a bit about Epic Mickey, but never played the games. Hehe, that would have been neat if Kopa had actually showed up in the game, since he is really forgotten about (shoot, I bet most TLK/Disney fans didnt even know he existed unless they looked him up or managed to read the book he was in).

I didnt really like the other movies, the original lionking is still my favorit childhood movie, but i am excited for this.

Yep! I have my reservations about "using" masterpiece characters, but at least there is this kernel of conservation ed in the show (and $$ to be made in merchandising, a necessary evil).

I don't like the 'younger brother of kiara' approach, mainly because he wasn't created when the movies were out.
I would have rather seen mufasa and scar. Im sure they would have achieved the same purpose and it gives those that grew up on it backstory or forclosure.

I thought the original did get a 3D remake? I distinctly remember wearing the ridiculous glasses and complaining about how none of the music sounded like I remembered.

It was rereleased in theatres a few years back, the same movie (traditional animated) but visually cleaned up and in 3D. Not CGI 3-D, but "you need glasses to watch it" 3D.

Thanks! I don't have that set. That's why I don't remember Kopa. And the box art is bugging me. It looks like young Simba with adult Simba. The mane looks like Mufasa's, but the face is clearly Simba.

At the end of the first movie, the cub held up was supposed to be a boy. However, when Lion King 2 was released they decided that Simba and Nala should have a girl, so the boy was completely scrapped. Popular theory is that he was Kopa and Zira killed him, hence her exile and why Simba is so protective of Kiara.

On the book cover the adult is Simba and the lion cub is his son, Kopa.
Yeah, the cub at the end was originally supposed to be a boy. I have a Little Golden Book that has a line about Simba and Nala "proudly watching while their son was presented" or something like that.
There's a place online with scans of the "Six New Stories" (about Kopa, Simba's son), but I can't find the website right now. They're really good! There's one about Nala as a cub that I really like.

Was the cub every officially called a boy by Disney? Or were these just in books and things were they assumed it was a boy and Disney never really verified either way?
It just seems so odd they would decide in the second movie she is a girl.

I don't consider any character that's in an official Disney book as entirely 'fan-made', but eh. In almost all of the books I have, the cub is described as a boy. In fact, in this very book:

...Before the next page promptly reads 'King Simba was very protective of his little girl cub, Kiara'.
I won't lie - I received the Six New Adventures books just days after the VHS was released, so I was very familiar to Kopa. Even though I knew he was basically Simbatwo, I really adored him (since cub Simba is my favorite character of all time). So when the sequel came out in Blockbusters, I saw the front cover and immediately thought 'Wait, who the heck are you?!'. I know I'm not the only one who got confused with this, and books like that will only raise further questions. Disney have had ample time to correct that, but for one reason or another, they choose to leave the 'son' part in.
I suppose this could work now with Kion at least.

I have to laugh because that is EXACTLY the same text that was in the Little Golden Book!
I think it makes sense that they originally had the cub as a boy. The movie was about Mufasa's relationship with his son, so they came full circle and created and ending where Simba has a son.
Then they decided to do "Lion King 2" as "Romeo and Juliet but with lions" and I think they felt "overprotective father of a daughter" played better than "overprotective father of a son", so here we are.
Oh! Nala also had a sibling originally--a little brother named Mheetu who always wanted to follow her around and do whatever she and Simba were doing. (His name's a pun on "Me too!") They were going to include him in the first movie originally, but then they didn't. So he's kind of in canon limbo.
He was in at least one Disney comic, I think.

In The Lion King, all the female characters are a tan colour, and all the males are a darker yellowish colour (excluding Scar). Obviously when this movie was made the creators weren't thinking about how a sequel would be made, so they just made the cub a boy, so the movie was a "full circle" :)

Well, that one girl cub in The Lion King 2 did have a hair tuft. (Zira's daughter.) But yeah, in the first movie all the males were a brighter hue than the females.
What if . . . Kopa grew up but then left to become a wandering rogue lion? Maybe he had an adventurous spirit. Kiara could have been from a later litter.

But yeah.. it always bothered me too how the original cub was a boy, then suddenly it was changed to a girl in the sequel. They could have at least given Kiara black ear rims to look more like the cub at the end of the first movie to make it a touch less obvious...

I'm mildly intrigued.
I haven't been particularly impressed by the glut of Disney's most recent sequels (Cinderella 2, Ariel's Beginning) with the exception of Cinderella 3. But Disney seems to be making better choices lately. I'll certainly give it a chance.
*Btw, I had no idea about Kopa but Disney often contradicts themselves between stories and film. Hence the whole Beast/Prince Adam debate.*

Right there with you. I'm worried it won't be as enjoyable. But I have a somewhat high tolerance so as long as I find it adorable and at least mildly interesting and/or funny I'll probably be into it. But yes.. I'm pretty wary because the quoted target audience is so low. Goodness.

I'm thrilled about it, I've been wanting a lion cub tv series since Kimba the White Lion and that was over long before I was born! But I have to admit I thought Kion was Mufasa at first. It's weird how he has pawprint marks but I figure they'll explain it well enough. I have some good faith in this after how Sofia the First turned out.

All my childhood dreams come true! I mean, I had the Timon & Pumbaa cartoon as a kid, but I was always more interested in the lions.
I was a little surprised that they went with Simba and Nala's cub instead of Kiara and Kovu's, but I guess kids nowadays will still be more familiar with the original than the sequel. TLK is such a classic, and they re-released it in theatres rather recently, didn't they? (As in, the past few years). But I am glad they're keeping Kiara. I always did like her.
I've also always been interested in a movie or show or something that explored Mufasa and Scar's childhood. I think that would have been neat. Well, villain backstory movies seem to be Disney's new thing. :P Fingers crossed.

A back story about Mufasa and Scar would be great. I think it could make the first film much more traumatic and emotional as well, if Scars demise was shown. I hope it happens one day!
