Title: Rainbow Dash Shadowbolt Hair
Post by: Dead Pants on July 27, 2013, 08:16:21 PM
First of all, please forgive me if there's already a topic on this. I looked and didn't see anything on this subject so!

I got my Rainbow Dash Shadowbolt TRU exclusive today and found her hair was pretty much glued/gelled in place and I was practically in tears. I love having nice soft hair on my ponies and finding that her hair was pretty much rock hard broke my heart!

Does anyone know if all of them are supposed to be like this or if mine is a factory error? ;~;

I'm attempting to soak her in hot water right now to loosen it up, but it's pretty solid.

Um otherwise, she's very lovely!! Her tail does have most colors in it from what I can tell and the paint job on mine is pretty great. The leg marks don't wrap all the way around the leg, similar to how Zecora's braclets don't wrap all the way around either.

Would a mix of warm water and laundry detergent possibly break it up? Or something meant to get oil stains out?

Mine was the same way. It's kind of a wax substance that keeps the mane styled.

I'm pretty sure it actually is glue. I washed it with dish soap and warm water and combed it with a fine tooth comb.

Repeating over and over. Whole process took about an hour but her hair is no worse for wear and is soft and normal under all that goo!

The comb started picking up rolled up white gunk and that's when I was sure it was glue. I washed it out due to being paranoid about what the glue may do to her hair over time.

Good luck getting her all soft! Just be patient  :)

Thank you elliptacolore, I will be trying that tonight. It's nice to see they're trying to make RD's hair more show-accurate, but seriously, glue?
Ick, no hard-as-rock pony hair for me, thank you :/

WOW! I am sorry to hear that. I wonder if they all are like that?

Do you have any pictures? I want to know what it looks like after you get it clean.

Yupp they are all coming like that. Mine came out fairly easy just took a bit of time. I was kind of confused as to why they thought gluing hair would be a good idea lol
After a while of washing and combing the glue will start to come out in white little chunks.
Good luck with your pony.

The correct term for this factory hair styling is "lightly gelled." Am I right, Monster High collectors?

I'm glad that some of you were able to clean her up! She looks great with her hair de-glued!

Yes, its not that dissimilar to what doll and MH collectors experience at the moment.

Unfortunately a glue gel is the cheapest and easiest way for them to style hair for packaging.

As others have said boiling water and repeat washing and you will be able to remove it eventually.

Are these the Taobao ponies, or the official boxed TRU release? I was going to leave mine MIB (once my TRU has them) but I'm not so sure I want to leave glue in her hair. :whoa:

Worry not!!! First, yes, this is how she's being released. A travesty, I know. What I did is soak her hair with some boiling water, then got a fine-tooth comb and some shampoo. Shampoo her from the roots for a bit, then rinse in the hot water and comb. Repeat until all the stuff is out! The hair will be very soft afterwards.

Yes she is being released like that. The long hair version is from Taobao.

Another reason to love the long-haired version from Taobao. I really like her mane! She just comes with the usual bird's nest hair sans glue.

I guess Hasbro expected collectors to just leave her alone. :( What's the point of a brushable if you can't brushie-brushie-brushie?

From far away, it looks nice. Get closer and it looks melted or something.

How does it fell? Like dry G1 hair.

It's a shame because aside from the hair issue, Hasbro really dig a wonderful job with the decals/paint.

Hahaha. Yes. Those of us that collect Monster High are no strangers to the whole glue-in-hair thing.  :silly:

I just washed mine out yesterday. It took over half an hour. I didn't use boiling water, but just hot water and dish soap. No more stuff is coming out, but the hair feels stiff and dry. At one point I was combing with a toothbrush. How soft did the bangs get for you? Ugh, there really was a better way for them to do this.

Has anyone washed the glue out and ended up with dry/stiff hair? Should I boil and wash again?

Try conditioner, that could help with making it softer.

Try a good degreaser - like a dish soap/liquid - that should get the remaining glue out of the hair.

That's what I was using all along :'( Her tail is so soft, but her mane feels really really dry now. I don't know if it's glue, or if I damaged it getting the glue out.

Its going to be glue unfortunately :( It can really deaden the feel of the hair. If all you used was a degreaser you did not damage it. Have you tried soaking it in a very very warm water, then slather it in conditioner, wrap in saran wrap, leave for 12-24 hours and then remove and rinse in tepid water.

So, are you saying the glue is still in the hair, or the glue is gone and it just dried out the hair? I haven't used conditioner yet. Could it have been the toothbrush?

Its probably a bit of combination that the glue has dried the hair a little but also that there could well be residual surface glue left which is still coating some of the hair.

Any pointer for how to get the rest out? Before I was rinsing it in the hottest water under the faucet and combing through with glue.

It depends on how brave you are.

First I would try the conditioner soak and see if you have any luck with that.

If none then try baby oil or tea tree oil and brush it completely through the hair. Its going to leave the hair a little greasy so condition it again after you have removed the baby oil. Make sure to give it some time to soak and you may need to repeat a few times.

The only final option you can try is to brush acetone or goo off through. I really do not recommend this unless you are desperate - you also of course want to keep it far away from the paint if you have to resort to it and make sure to condition the hair completely after wards as it will damage hair in the long run.

Okay, I'll try the conditioner. Do you think the tea tree oil would dissolve leftover glue residue, or is it just to "hydrate" the plastic hair?

I used conditioner/shampoo mix to clean the glue out of her hair, along with boiling water. Then, I diligently combed all the cruddies out with a fine-tooth comb. It's pretty soft now; not so much the bangs, but the rest of her hair feels great.

The tea tree or baby oil helps loosen the glues grip so in theory its to help any remaining glue come off the hair.

I... like it that way. It's unique. If I want any other Rainbow Dash toy with soft hair, I'll buy one and style it that way.

That having been said, I think it's totally cool to get the glue/wax out of it if you'd rather have her hair soft. :)

Mine was rock hard too!

After 45 mins if scrubbing and coming I know have a glue free pony and wrinkly prune fingers!

She is so much better, although I do hate how HASBRO think they have to see the hair horizontally to create decent bangs... That is half the reason why they have ended up having to gel the ponies.

They should just give then cute little forelocks like they did in the 80s

Plus I don't think its glue, its wax.
