http://www.examiner.com/video/ipad-scam
I...just...can't believe it. She bought an Ipad that was a MIRROR. For $200 at a gas station.
-
That's pretty sick, and I certainly hope they catch the guy who did it and get her money back somehow...buuuut I have to say, that woman really wasn't using her brain. Obviously I don't know how the guy presented the 'ipad' to her - must have been at least a little bit convincing - but geeze, you'd think most people would examine what they're buying before handing over $200 to some random guy in a truck!
-
 I would personally never buy something out of someone's car... insane.
-
You know..... Even if it was real, a dude selling it out of the back of his car for way less than it's worth should have AT LEAST screamed "this is probably stolen"!

this!
even if she opened it to try it out (which she indeed should have done...) before actually handing the money over, that price should have made her think something like this - I know it would have made me think of this. I love to find stuff for bargain prices, but dang, not with the possibility of them being stolen as the reason for their super low price >_<
-
u__u; You can't buy things second hand without LOOKING inside the package! People do that all the time with craigslist and put bricks inside of packages. Or even worse, when there is a deal too good to be true, it's likely that the item is stolen....
-
That is called the pig in the poke scam, its been around for as long as people have been trading things. If you were an honest person in the first place, you wouldn't fall for it. beacause like Kaos said, you obviously aren't thinking its legit if someone approaches you like that.

That's fairly victim blaming.
-
It's sad that it happened but its really hard for me to feel sorry for her at all. & I agree with xeevee.
-
really? I mean the first thing that would jump out at me is it's stolen! We had a guy cruising around our shopping centre in a van once selling tv's... we asked for their card sarcastically, (they're thieves, of course they don't have one, but if they did it would make them easier to track) and called the cops. 99% chance it's stolen... or you'd at least have a place of business!
-
Wow. WOWWWW. I can't believe people actually purchase things this way and are SHOCKED when they get ripped off. Caveat emptor!

That may be true, but it is who the scam artists are targeting. They hope to find someone who is willing to risk buying something that is most likely stolen, so they don't call the police.
I have a friend who basically has made a career out of teaching people about scam artists. He literally goes out to be scammed so he can learn what people are doing. He once paid a woman $100 for a counterfeit 20pound note when he was in Scotland, just because he HAD to have it.
-
Good grief :argh:
-
wow it really is a buyer beware world out there , I hope they cant scam someone else.
-
I believe in the good and honesty of everybody, but I also have the foresight to not expect something very high-end to be available so cheap and in a gas station parking lot.

I agree with you both 100%! I would never buy something (especially electronics) from someone else's car. It's either a scam or it's stolen goods and neither is good!
-
I had this amusing thought. If she were suspicious and savvy, she could say, "Sure! Let me just go Xerox a few $20 for ya." XD

I agree with this! Always buy electronics from reputable dealers, or if online, check the feedback first. Never mind that buying from a shady seller like from someone else's car is already a foolish idea to begin with.
-
This is why we do not buy stuff from guys in cars lady.
-
LOL...... I would never buy from someone right out of there car. Unless its a farmer selling her vegs. they grew on the farm.
-
you'd think most people would examine what they're buying before handing over $200 to some random guy in a truck!
It's not uncommon that a prospective buyer is shown a real version of the item, but when it comes to exchanging money and product, they instead give them a box with some other object inside (bricks, cement, or in this case a mirror).
-
I think that if she's that stupid, she deserve what she got.
-
lol she's not very bright.. Just look at her glasses, no lenses! haha! Oh gosh. silly lady. They'll find the guy, he must've been on camera somwhere since it's a gas station
-
I have to laugh...how stupid are some people really?
Oh humanity, I do weep for you.

everybody has an abscence of mind and gets scammed at some point. I've been there and later I was all '......wth was I thinking?'
-
While I can understand something being priced cheaply is appealing especially if someone can't normally afford the full price and that people can have legit reasons to be selling off something for much less than it is worth (lost job, sick pet, drug habit, just plain overspent) but I would be careful. If they are legit they wouldn't mind giving me time to make sure I am getting what I am paying for. You should always approach these things with a healthy dose of skepticism.
-
My fiance did something almost the same as this lady....
He bought a CD-player but was thinking he bought a DVD-player from a guy out of his truck...and when i come home he unpack the thing and saw it was a cd-player and then he realised he was scammed....it was only 20 bucks so no big damage...but i laughed my butt of! And called him stupid...lol ;-)

I feel bad for the woman but at the same time, who would buy an ipad from some random person in a truck at a gas station. Obviously, she didn't check out the ipad before she bought it. But, I do hope they catch the guy who did it so the woman could get her money back possibly.
