Title: How do you feel about armies or twins?

So, I'm curious, do you like armies? Do you have any? Or do you prefer as much diversity as possible?

Personally, I've always been of the mindset that I don't even want doubles, to get only one of each pony and really strive for diversity as I don't want a lot of ponies to begin with. Problem is, my beautiful and beloved Diamond Rose has a factory error wonky eye, and I don't know how I feel about getting another one. I would feel so terrible to get rid of the old one in place of a new one with straight eyes, but every time I inspect her eyes, it's just so annoying! She's one of my favorite ponies (her, Plumsweet and Rarity are the gems of my collection <3) so it bothers me she's less than perfect (up until now I've been extremely lucky when it comes to errors on my G4 ponies).

Haha, so much drama over one little pony! Tell me what to do!

I tend to give my doubles to other collectors or people who will appreciate them, but I DO want a Firefly army <3 Only because I can't get enough of her!

I am not really a fan of doubles. I do have very small armies of AJ and rainbow dash, but even then, all my copies of them are different versions of those two ponies.  I don't really understand wanting loads of the exact same toy.  It definitely isn't for me.

Mine came with a factory error too. 1/4 of her tail was super long and the other 3/4 of it was really short. The long part had glue in it too, so I ended up cutting it and now she has a short tail! You can't tell unless you pick her up though. I still love her anyways. :lovey:

Don't get rid of yours! She is so unique and special! You could get another one and they could be twins! The one with the weird eyes could be the ":muffin: Pony" one and the other one could be the "normal" one.

Man, Hasbro should really start focusing on quality control!

I can't STAND having multiples of the exact same pony!  I don't even like having a lot of the same pose in my collection.  's why I stopped collecting G4's for the most part.
I AM in the process of putting together an army though- just a little different from most peoples' armies.  I'm too cheap for it to be very big right now, but I collect lots of different Surprises.  I buy up plain Surprises when I see them and make minor tweaks to them... partial rehairs, stuff like that.  I'm working on a TAF Surprise at the moment.  I want to get a bunch of customs of Surprise as different gens/in different poses eventually, when I have the money.  It's fun!

I don't like having doubles or armies, although I have a small unintentional army of Moondancers. I actually don't even like variants because I don't like having multiples, but I can never bring myself to just pick one if I end up with a few slightly different versions of the same one.

I don't have any thing that I'd call an army and generally don't keep doubles. By doubles I mean more then one pony thats exactly the same. I do however collect variants. My unrealistic goal is to have one of every pony.

That's my unrealistic goal too! I do actually collect variants if they're different enough, but, for example, I have two slightly different colored Moonstones with slight variations in the size of their symbols, and I don't want them both, but I can't decide which to keep.

It depends for me. I LOVE my Sundance/Sunsparkle army and would adore to make it bigger, but I don't want a bunch of truly "identical" ponies. If I get doubles/triples/etc for my army, I want them all to be different. Missing tails, hair cuts, symbol rub, cancer, etc. to set them apart. I also want a small My Pretty Pony army, of color fade variations.

On the other hand, I've got multiple G4 Pinkies and Rarities because of sets, blind bags, FS ponies, etc. I don't really like the doubles and have gotten rid of a lot of them.

I came on to the forums during the big Army Swap and I thought everyone's armies were amazing and the swap was amazing.

I already have a Pinkie Pie army going of all different kinds of Pinkie Pies, so I'm cool with armies. If you have a special love for one pony, I don't see the problem with having an army.

My Diamond Rose also has a factory error!  :blink: Her cutie mark is too low. I also have a Merida doll with :muffin: Pony eyes, so I know how annoying it can be. It bothered the heck out of me at first, but then I just smiled and told her it made her unique. Now i don't even notice it. I think you get used to it after a while, but if you want to get a double, get a double. You could always try to fix the eye once you have a double or, if it bothers you enough, sell her or turn her into a great custom.

I like having twins, but if I have more than that I usually will sell or trade.

With g-1's, I'm collecting doubles (not actively, though - more by accident) and the doubles all sit up towards the edge of the shelf with their long, luxurious tails all curled and hanging over the edge - so these are the Pretty Rump girls, who usually have a double who can sit with her "family" and face forward so I can see her face.

I didin't have an army interest at first.  But then I accidentally got four Baby Surprises (one a custom) and decided I wanted an army of her.  But only different versions of her.  XD

I only like armies if it's the same pony  but in different poses so it's not all exactly the same. I have a small Minty army but they're all different. All four of em aren't the same one.

I admit that it irks me a bit when I see armies of people who have 30 of a pony (g1) that I am dying to get and can't find. If it's a pony that's really common like Firefly I don't care as much. I'm sure it's just pure jealousy on my part but it bugs me.  :shakefist:

I'm not real big on armies. I've sold a lot of my doubles to reduce my herd a bit. But I do have several doubles of my favorite ponies that I love and am keeping (such as Fizzy and Baby Glory) I have a small accidental army of Twilight Sparkle and Fluttershy though! :lol: And I have lot of different G3 Pinkie Pie's. I like getting variants of the same pony :)

I have lots of mane 6 extras, and I have 3 Sweetie Belles. If it's an exact duplicate of another pony I have, then I can use one as bait. I don't mind variants though.

My daughter really likes Baby Firefly. She kept kidnapping the minty one so I bought 2 more from an arena member and then I won one in a lot and then I got a pearly Baby Firefly ....So now we have an army of Baby Firefly! ^.^

I don't mind having "twins" and I have doubles of a few ponies at the moment - Baby Glory, Baby Crumpet and a couple of sets of NBT twins.  But I have no interest in a full-blown army, though I must admit they do look cool.  :)

I have a MIB/MOC/MIP Cheerilee 'army', but although a few of them are technically the same pony in the same pose the boxes make them different.

With my G1 collection, I don't intentionally get doubles although it sometimes happens by accident. Unless the pony is different I will get rid of the extra(s). Also, I have 2 boxed G1 ponies in my collection and I also have loose versions of them, so I guess they are sort of mini armies! :P

Agreed. I'm new to collecting, but I have repeats, and it's taking some effort and running around to get them.  If someone is willing to shell out the time to stalk it or money to get it or dedication they deserve their pony.

Hehe, I'm getting one of each of the ponies I just want to collect, but have an army of wingers and flutters in the making. I don't have a specific one really that is the focus of my army.  I really only have a minty one of each. ^.^ The rest I'm buying in lots or damaged to repair. Like I bought a Starry wings the other day with missing wings and bad hair that I'm going to replace. I buy flutters without their wings since I feel the babies need a home.  I have a small tub of flutters I'm working to either clean up, re hair or make wings for.

@_@ I love my army of ponies and giving them a home, especially since other than my minty ones the majority of the others have flaws. Like I said though there is not really a specific one of those that I collect singly just ones that catch my eye at the time or need some love. ^.^

I have a Megan & Sundance army [and a small Baby Fifi army] but those are the only ponies I keep multiples off...everyone else is pretty much a single pony guy or gal!

I love seeing peoples armies and learning about why they particularly love that one pony!

I dont mind armies, I actually want a moondancer army.
But if I see someone who have an army made up of rare ponies I do get a tad annoyed as I would feel like he or she is hogging them. To share is to care!^^

I only keep twins or more under certain circumstances. Like if I get a better condition pony of one I already have and the flaws the one I already have has is something that has always "bugged" me I may keep the new one but I would never part with my original one if it's enrolled in my ponyworld. Twins/triplets always get other names and they are different characters to me. Same goes for different versions of the same pony, e.g. Rainbow Dash. I try not to get more than one version of a pony unless they are quite different from each other, but sometimes it may happen anyway.

No armies for me. I don't want doubles in my herd. It hasn't really been a problem except for G4. I just can't decide which Fluttershy I want (possibly Spring). I'm really trying to stick to no doubles but the G4 ponies are still being released so I may not be able to stick with that if some pretty new release catches my eye.

Same here. O_O I know it will never happen but I want it too. And I'm also including merch. The only things I'm not counting are different sizes of the same shirt. XD

As for me and armies, I have a Pinkie Pie army, although none of the items are the same, I have G3, 3.5, and 4 items in my Pinkie army. I also have a small Rainbow Dash army, again, none of the items are the same. I do collect variants too.

As for doubles, I put thm in my accesories bin because I don't know what to do with them. I have a friend who collects ponies so I suppose I can give them to her, since she gave me almost all her G3s a few months back.

I don't intend to build any armies.  Ponies that I really love, like Baby Crumpet and TAF Yum Yum, however, it is tempting.  I get an upgrade pony and think, I don't want to get rid of the one I intended to replace, or I already have a mint one and see one needing repair and think, I need to help her!  :D

So yeah, I understand where armies can get started. 

I admit, though, to feeling some jealousy or frustration when I see someone with a giant collection of a single item.  (Like, a particular accessory, for instance.)  I think that by them buying every ________ they ever found, that they're driving the price up and making it nearly impossible for me to find that accessory for a reasonable price.    But, I recognize that's my problem and not theirs.  :)

I know my army upsets a lot of people because I have so many wingers.  But they are the only ponies I actively collect, and I spend a lot of money on them.  For me, I am more of a "pony rescue" collector; being drawn to the wingers who have serious flaws.  90% of my collection have some sort of flaw.  Sure people get upset that I have so many HTF ponies, but in reality I buy them off eBay or from advertised Arena sales, so everyone had the opportunity to get them.

Haha yes! I'm the same as in I have two applejacks but they are in different poses. I don't mind that. I've got a couple of doubles and i find it a tad frustrating as sometimes I can't shift them! It's hard sometimes coz my sis sometimes buys ponies that ive already got but she didn't realize I'd got it! Haha.

My only army is the one in my avatar. It's an army of Heart Throb variants so it doesn't really count because they're all different... I did end up with an upgrade of Italy Heart Throb but since I'm displaying the old one with my "Mommies and Babies", my duplicates aren't together. But besides Heart Throb, I don't like having doubles. If I find an upgrade for a pony that I already have, I give the old one to my daughter to play with...

The idea of an army is starting to grow on me. I got a G3 Butterscotch in a lot I bought for baits, and when I introduced her to my G1 Butterscotch, they just look so darn cute together, that I could imagine a bunch of little Butterscotches frolicking around my collection. I wouldn't want a ton of ponies that are EXACTLY the same, though. They'd all have to have their own personality (ponyality?).

I love armies.  If one pony is super special to you and it makes you happier then humanly possible (LOL) than I say go for it!

Just imagine all the other ponies they might pass on that you love that they don't care as much about since they love "that" one pony over there.  If it's a htf or rare pony then they either have really good pony luck or lots of money in which to spoil themselves.  :)

Personally, I don't see the point in having an army of the exact same pony, but I understand armies of same character and different pose or variation (they ARE different). I don't want any doubles at all and that includes different poses and variations - for instance, I couldn't care less about nirvana ponies. If I ever get one by chance - lol - I will definitely sell it to someone who collect them. As for factory errors, I can't complain so far, as I don't really have anything worth mentioning (or anything at all, really). But I don't mind faults on new ponies - it makes them unique and they deserve love too !

Doing a multi-generational Minty army here.  Including custom Mintys.  I bought a g3 from someone here, realized when she arrived that she was an upgrade to one I had.  Doy!  Soo, I took the baitier one, de-tinseled her, repinked her hair and plan to pearlize her.  Also have made a BB G1.

Armies are great. I'm always impressed by the giant ones. I remember ...oh, what is their name? The collector with the hundreds of Seashells. That's gotta be one of the best armies out there.

I don't think it matters wether one person has 50 of one pony, or 50 people have one each. I love all of my Raincurls, and each one is different, actually. Would someone else be able to tell them apart? Maybe, but I doubt it.

I would love any others just the same ^.^

I dont mind doubles. I style their hair completely differently and i find that helps!
Sometimes I imagine them with a seperate personality too. I mean if Twilight Sparkle can have a brother she never bothered to tell anyone about, she could just as feasably have a twin sister too :lol:

Oh man, if I had the money and space, I would totally have an army!  But definitely of a common pony, not a rarer one.  It's mean to hog so many, and also a pain in the neck to track down enough for an actual army.  I think an army of Sweetheart Sister Dainty's or of Medleys would be lovely.

I sort of own armies of each of the core 6 G4 ponies, because I own every version of them released MIB (or just about)..... but no loose doubles yet! I wouldn't be totally opposed to it, but I wouldn't go out of my way to make it happen, either.

I have a couple twins with my G1's.  It's because I have not just my childhood ponies, but also my sister's, my best friends, and her sister's. And some of my aunt's. But with my G4's fluttershy was my first and I fell in love. Now I'm getting every one I can get my hands on. Lol. Until her though I wasn't a fan of armies.

I love armies!! I'm trying to slowly build a Baby Cotton Candy and Bowtie army. People usually build armies of a certain pony because that pony means a lot to them. I know that's why I'm doing it. :)

I don't really like armies, my personal opinion is that if someone is collecting an army of something rare, it's quite selfish as it makes it harder for others to get for their own collection, even if they only want one, and that is why I do not collect armies of anything.

It's lovely when people have armies of fairly common items, but rare ones, that's just unfair for everyone else... :huh:

My pony collection isn't big enough to justify umpteen of the same pony. But I've got some customs I made of Seashell, so there's 5 in that army, 5 different Applejacks, 3 of Parasol, (my childhood one, a custom baby one, and a rescue one who lives in the bathroom) and 2 baby Tic Tac Toes, one's had a forelock trim, and I've ended up with 3 Baby Sundances. I was supposed to Non-BBE one, but haven't got around to it. I haven't got any display room for ponies, so unless that happens I won't be filling shelves with Applejack-related goodness. But I can understand having ponies all the same colour looks pretty amazing on display.

I also like diversity.  I only want one of each pony.  I even sell some ponies that look even a little alike.  Like a few that have the same body color and same pose and similar hair color.

  I do love G1 twins though!  They are so cute!   :biggrin:

If they're variants - that's okay with me. I myself have two variants of Parasol (one regular US and Italian one with tropical hair) and two "variants" of Baby Blossom (one that's faded to gray and a lavender one). I'm also okay with buying the same pony once again if it's meant as a replacement.

I don't really understand the purpose of collecting armies though... I get it that people can like one particular pony, but why own ten or twenty figures of the same pony?

I'm sorry, no offence, but buying the same pony all the time is kind of unfair and, for the lack of better term, also kind of selfish. I could forgive it if a person was collecting an army of a pony that's quite common or that was mass produced, like, let's say, G3 Pinkie Pie. But if it's a pony that doesn't come up quite often, I find it to be quite unfair, especially towards those collectors who are still striving to get that pony.

This one mainly applies to G1 ponies, and especially the more rare ones.

I have several twins as well as a mini army of Red Roses. I have tons of diversity (I don't recall how many of hundreds of different ponies I have!) but I do like having several of my absolute favorite.

When I first found out about armies I didn't really understand them, but now I quite like the idea. I have a sort of army of standing on their hind legs blind bag ponies and I think they look awesome all together. I'm also developing a small Bunny Hop army because I want to restore broken ones and I really liked her as a child. All my Bunny Hops so far are in different states of disrepair!

It's not selfish at all, I mean if I want 5 Greek mintys and I have the money to buy them then what's the issue.... It means I had the money to buy, same if I buy a peachy or a posey or a Buttons. I'm not selfish because I bought a pony 6 or 7 times over, it's just collecting.

And if a pony is super rare then no one will have an army because it'll be impossible to find them. I have two MIP G1 Mintys amongst my 30+ strong army, that's because both were swap gifts. And I'm not parting with them ;)

:/  I don't like the argument that armys 'drive up prices', since that makes army collectors sound like they do not intend to pay; like shill bidders.

Is there really any evidence backing the claim at all?  For instance, is Blue Belle harder to find since I've started my army, or do they go for higher prices?  Or factory error Blue Belles?  (it's taken me 7 years to collect 13 of them)  How about any other ponies that collectors have made armies of?

People feel that way because there is a limited supply of everything but G4s (though some of those are limited too, like discontinued bangs versions). The more of one type of pony one person has, the less there is of that pony available to the rest of the world. That's why its upsetting with rare ponies, especially things like super rare nirvanas, because there are so few of that pony to start with.

When it comes to online collections like on adoptable sites or currently being released lines of whatever, I don't care what a person hoards. But when there's a limited number to start with, especially very rare things with very few available, it annoys me when someone has an "army" of them in any type of collection. Because it DOES make it harder for others to find them.

I think armies look neat, whether there is all of one pose or  a variety of poses.  I don't think I'll ever have a real army of any pony, I don't wanna buy them online and pay shipping for everything.I'd have a sugarberry army if I tried to have any army, she's one of my favs.  I don't mind doubles either, G1's are so hard for me to find that I keep any I can get.

I have an army of Little Flitters  :)  I'm up to about 12 (plus a plush and a custom) now and I love them all.  I don't buy every single one that shows up for sale and everyone else always has a fair chance at her.  I don't see the problem.  Even if someone wanted an army of Mimic, it wouldn't bug me.  Because they have just as high a chance of getting her as anyone else.  If you lost out on the sale, would it really matter if the person who bought her already had one?  If you have the money, go for it.

Nope nope. I like seeing other's armies, but for myself I'd rather not.
I can't even have doubles of other dolls either. The closest thing to an 'army' collection I have is of Ariel.

Now I wouldn't mind collecting armies of pony themed things though!

I can understand your point, but personally, I feel that since there would have been other people bidding (and this instance only applies to ebay and ebay only) then I feel it is unfair to own armies of rare ponies. I have a decent sized winger army, but that doesn't mean I go out any buy every winger in sight.  I bid on them just like everyone does.  I also buy from Arena members, usually from older posted sales threads.  It just so happens that I have the money to be able to buy rare ponies when they come up for sale.  But I certainly don't go out of my way to deliberately buy ALL the wingers I see for sale.  There are tons of them listed at any given point in time, and I've passed on so many the last few months. 
There were 2 Argie wingers listed on auction on eBay a little while ago.  I bid seriously on both of them and lost.  Even I get outbid sometimes!! 
And Zenna, your Little Flitter army is one of my most favorite armies ever!  They just look so very happy being with you:)  They clearly know how loved they are!!!

I highly doubt people intentionally buy every single one of that pony that's for sale. I know I don't. If there's a baity Bowtie  or a really cheap ine and I'm buying from that person already I'll take it. :)

I collect beddy bye eyes. I love them, no matter how baity they are. ^^ I'm lucky not many people seem to like them. I think if it were any other different type of pony and I had two that I'd probably sell or trade one. Sometimes I sell ponies I don't like.

As for armies...I kind of like seeing other people's armies. ^^ The winger armies and other people's armies are really amazing!

This right here. When it comes to Ebay or even the Arena it's fair game for everyone to buy a pony or bid. Especially when bidding there will always be someone that is going to bid the top amount, and if we have the money then why shouldn't we buy? I'm starting my own little winger/flutter army currently, and I don't feel a bit bad about it. I've been buying flutters with regrind or issues and hair that has to be replaced. I got a box in today with wingers that were all damaged in some way or another, and I'm sitting here now rehairing one of them.  I feel like I put effort into my babies, and I'm sure a lot of people feel the same about their armies. Especially those that do not collect only mint ponies. I like my little growing army and giving them a home and knowing that some of them are avoiding being "bait" by simply living here with me to be my pony.

There are plenty of times I have the cash for ponies and sometimes I don't.  Just because a person collects an army doesn't mean they buy up every single one and no person ever will get one. :lol:

I agree with all of this.... If I see a second or third pony on a bidding site like ebay, I don't plan on saying to myself - I shouldn't bid on this pony because I already have two, someone else might want it! I will say to myself, I am going to bid on this pony for my army (I don't have one by the way) and if someone else wants it they can bid against me!

even though I do find them cool-looking (I always drool over michelle53's wingers, and Novavelle's Quackers made me fall in love just now ^^ ) I myself am not interested in setting up an army, and usually I don't like doubles either. I am happy with the same pony in a different pose or version, but I'm not interested in getting two completely similar ones*, so usually once this happens I try to choose the one I like better and sell (or trade! there are always ones I don't have yet!) the other one. sometimes it's hard, and if I'm not sure which I like better (e.g. they both have some little flaws but different ones) I may wait for a third, and for some reason it usually makes it easier to choose just one.

 *okay, here I must add that it's only for ponies. I also collect Furbies and there (even though I do try to avoid having duplicates) I do have similar coloured ones. however it's a bit more difficult there, as they can have different coloured eyes and different names, so it's not that easy to find 2 that have the same colour of fur, eyes and name. I don't remember coming across such a combination ever.

however, I do know two situations where I'd get doubles: one is if one of them is used to play with. if I'll have children who will be interested in them I'm sure I'll keep  and get doubles of some of my ponies whom I just wouldn't want to used to play with. the other is if one of the doubles is a childhood pony of mine, and that also is the one that's in worse shape. there's no way I could sell my childhood ponies, but some of them do have some flaws, and I might want to have a better version of them alongside.

I don't have any armies of the exact same pony, it's not for me, but that's just personal preference. I love seeing other peoples' armies, especially the Blue Belle army, Michelle's wingers and the Baby Squirmy army :D I do have one duplicate in my collection and that's Skydancer. She's my favourite pony so when I got a mint condition upgrade I couldn't part with the one I already had, so I have two of her. I also have several Nirvana variations of her and I refer to them as my Skydancer army but other than the twins, each is different :)

Ok I'll put it another way: if there is a Minty on eBay and no one bids, then it's fair game if I win it never mind if I have 1 or 100 ;) no one else wanted it, no problem.

Anyway even if a thousand people bid on it, it's who is willing to pay for it. It's hardly unfair if people moan about my nirvana minty army ( havent got one but i mean for example)  but are not actually willing to buy them anyway! :lol:

I've got a Twilight Sparkle army, but almost all of them are different - the one with bangs, the one without bangs, the raised hoof/crown version, the blind bag, the sparkly blind bag, the cake topper, the FS version, McDs, tinsel mane...
Although I have an extra one with bangs because I have to have a pony on my desk at work. :)

The only "army" I have is G4 Rarity. I am trying to collect every toy of her, and until the translucent Rarity is released, my collection is complete! All blind bag variants, all Playful Ponies, Glimmer Wings, FS, McDonald's... I'm very happy with it. I'm a bit of completionist, so I even want Rarity's that are slightly different, which includes raised-leg and tinsel mane versions. I also collect "Rarity pose" blind bags just because, although that collection is far from complete. Not sure if you could call my Rarity's a proper army since they're all different in some small way, but it's the closest I have.

Other than that, I'm not big on having doubles, although if I had loads of money to burn, I wouldn't mind having an Ice Crystal army, haha. I love looking at other people's armies.

one thing that bugs me is the fact that *every* time there is talk of doing an army swap, this subject comes up within a week. :/  But if no one is talking about an army swap, I don't see this discussion either...

I mean, prices go up to what people are willing to pay, that's a basic fact of our economy.  If no one is willing to pay a price, it starts dropping(think how much the exclusive ponies usually go for right after the event, and what they go for a year or 2 later!)

I don't collect double's (except maybe for my daughter), but I do have armies. As in collecting varients of the same favorite pony of mine.
