Gusty, a.k.a. "Stinky" (sunfading)
« on: May 10, 2012, 04:27:34 AM »
I don't know if this is brag arena worthy. It's just a pony a bought, well, maybe not just any pony it's the pony that started my MLP revival around Christmas when I saw her on the internet. I thought Gusty was the most beautiful pony I had ever seen. I got her for an okay price but considering what she looked like when I got her, I think she was worth a bit less than what I payed for her.

I tried not having too high expectations when unwrapping her but the first thing I thought was "That's not stunning white, as it said in the ad, that's the most yellow white pony I've seen." (I have seen worse around the arena for instance, but for me, that was the most yellowed pony I'd seen.) Also, her symbols had some factory "glitter spill" that I later decided to remove. I wanted to give her a bath immediately, but before I did I had to check if she still smelled pony, she smelled ... cigarette smoke. So, I got a yellowed pony that smelled smoke. The symbols were okay and the hair is silky smooth but this pony had issues. She's missing a plug at the back of her mane and the front plug is very thin.

But however, I have Gusty! After a week in a plastic bag with baking soda plus cat litter, and two months of sunfading I can show her.

The end result.

Before. Notice the "glitter spill" on the symbol. I removed it with a toothpick, first dipped in
water then in acetone and at the end I used a paper towel dipped in acetone wrapped
around a toothpick.

I tracked down "her" outfit.

And her comb.

Edit: This was my first try at sunfading and the most interesting thing was that it seemed like all of the plastic absorbed the sun, even the parts that were covered. I used to peak under the foil covering the leaves and after a few weeks when the horse was whiter, the parts around the leaves were still yellow. However towards the end when I had a look, the parts around the leaves were white too.

Oh wow.  She looks so much nicer than when you first got her.  I was so disappointed for you when I read how she looked when she arrived.  Sunfading obviously worked really well.  How interesting that even the plastic under the foil faded!

Congrats on now owning a very, very pretty pony :)

She's stunning
I myself have been looking for a good condition Gusty but most of the ones I find are indeed yellowed   I was thinking about just giving in and giving her a good sunfade when I got her. The result you got is definitely impressive! I've never sunfaded before but I have a Windy here that needs it as well that I might give it a shot with

Thank you all. Yes, she turned out lovely. I just started sunfading Moondancer, that was whiter than Gusty from the beginning but now she looks yellowed next to her. The funny thing is that my whitest pony probably is Gingerbread, who quite often doesn't age that well and doesn't stay that white.

Maybe you can give her some new hair?

Sunfading Gusty apparently works so I a yellowed one would be fixable. I would be careful with Windy and the sun though, since she's purple. I've read that purple and sun is a bad match. They can fade.

Wow, she looks gorgeous! Good job fixing her up!

Funnily enough, the yellowest white pony I've ever seen in person is also a Gusty...
