Your favorite real life horses/ponies
« on: July 05, 2022, 04:45:04 AM »
I know not everyone likes horses, but there are a lot of horsey people around here! I thought it might be fun to see what everyone's favorite breeds were, or if you have horses yourself!

Pictures welcome and encouraged!

I've never owned a horse but I have been around them and ridden several times when I was younger. My favorite breed is the Friesian. I think they are so beautiful and I love their wavy hair. I also love that it's traditionally kept long.

I also love all the big draft breeds; Clydesdale, Percheron, Shire, Haflinger, etc.

Some exceptional horses are the Icelandic horse, Przewalski's wild horse, Akhal-Teke, Paint, Appaloosa, and Wild Mustang.

I adore ponies and miniature horses too. Really, I like them all  Out of the ones I listed, I've seen only a few in person. I've never seen a Friesian in person. I'd imagine I'd be in so much awe I would not be able to breath properly

The last time I saw a horse was a comedy talent troop of miniature horses and Little People. It was a lot of fun! That was years ago now. I do see some in fields here and there when I'm out and about.

So what about you? What are your favorites? Do you own any horses? :D

Ooo fun topic  This is not something I've actively thought about since my early teens (up until that it was something I frequently thought about, lol!)

Perhaps a boring answer but I guess I'm partial to the Finnhorse. They're such versatile horses, and I love how down-to-earth they are, not skittish like so many warmblood horses I've met... My family has a Finnhorse and she is of the pony-sized type, with the typical chestnut colouring and flaxen hair.

As I'm mostly familiar with Finnhorses, my other favourite breeds are mainly based on looks. I love draught horses and (large) ponies, or pony-sized horses, the most. The Fjord horse, Welsh Cob, Fell pony, Connemara, New Forest pony, and Icelandic horse are some of my favourites. Shetland ponies are always cute and they're probably the breed I'm most familiar with after Finnhorses. Such big personalities! :D I also adore the Shire, Clydesdale and North Swedish horse among others. Some of these I've never seen in person.

I do love Arabian horse's slender and streamlined body and shiny coat. German Riding Pony is a horse-shaped pony, and  what else can I ask for? Oh, and British Sire horse because it looks very strong in a very polite way. I am not much of an actual horse person, I only grow up with Black Beauty and a lot of horse care handbooks and novels.

I love Shetland ponies.  I also have a soft spot for Morgans.  I was friends with one when I was younger.

I mostly like the cute little horses because they're so non-threatening, like that dancing pony from the commercial

In high school I worked at a barn cleaning stalls and taking riding lessons.  My first apartment was a barn apartment and part of my rent was caring for the horses.  I got my first horse at 19, a saddlebred mare named Rita.  My mom has had a few horses over the years.  We now currently have two new minature horses, Gracie and April.
I like draft horses, paints, and appaloosas.

My friend has (or had - haven't seen him in years, so IDK) a really small breed of horse. I don't know the name of the breed, but he was sooo small and could get up on his back legs and not be much taller than my friend (who is not very tall).

I still remember when he posted the first picture of him on FB, I about lost it. I'm a sucker for small horsies!

Wow I haven't thought about riding horses in a long time since my dad passed away in 2013! In 2012 I was going out to a stable and I was OK in size just small enough to ride a horse. And his name was named Amigo an appaloosa.. I really liked him... I learned a lot from his owner Joana about horses in general and how to take care of them. She was kind of like a mentor for me but it was short lived cause she had some horses pass away and one of them was Amigo then my dad died the following year. I just had to follow where life took me. Now that things are finally settled down I could probably do what it was that I wanted to do in 2012... Learn how to horse jump and compete... That's what dad would of wanted me to do. I was told that I was a great rider when I was younger by my uncle Bob in Montana.

The total amount of times that I rode a horse was 3 times. Once out in Montana in 3rd grade and the other two were Amigo.

As for my favorite horse and in looks is definitely the Friesian and the Gypsy Vanor (the tall ones not the miniature)
There is a sport friesian for jumping... I thought where they breeded a friesian with a sport horse. I'd like one of them. There are other horses I like that are bread for jumping like the Morgan is cool tool.
Thanks for this I think I want to work on my goal again.

I am a horse girl, though currently, I am down to one who is 33 this year. I have had her since she was 12. Her barn name is Cherokee and she is a registered tobiano bay Paint mare.  Her registered name is Pressed For Money. She’s got laminitis, Cushings Disease and white line disease.  Still, she does and looks pretty good for her age.

I would love to get another riding horse but it’s not the right time in my life. I just had another baby, so I don’t have the time to commit to daily chores. I am lucky my father looks after Cherokee for me daily. Hopefully, when my kids are a bit older, I can get another.

My favorite breed is the Friesian, also. They’re gorgeous! When I was in college I got to visit a breeding farm in PA during our Collegiate Horsemen’s Association national convention. They move beautifully. My dream would be to have one to ride Western in a black and silver saddle and tack set.

At one point I wanted to be an equine vet or reproductive specialist. I even went as far as getting my BS in equine science but it didn’t work out for many reasons.

ah yay, horses :lovey:

I LOVE heavy horses. They're all my favourites, both temperament wise and looks-wise. Ardennais is one of my favourites, as well as Nordsvensk/North Swedish horse like Griffin mentioned. And Dølehest, ahh they're so gorgeous. I'm also fond of heavier-set smaller breeds like Fjord horse, and Vanner/Irish Cob/Tinker horses. I will be owning a horse at some point in my life, and that will most likely be a vanner. They have THE best hoof feathering, and gorgeous long manes... and a lot of them have mustaches, too, it's adorable x)

I'm not a big person height- or weight wise, and I have several health issues that makes things like lifting big and heavy hooves hard for instance. smaller feet work, but the ardennais is... a bit too much, realistically. (I ride one right now, and he's not helpful with lifting them either, haha) So a small, but heavy horse is perfect haha. I adore Clydesdales and Shires though.

(then to be fair, I also love warmbloods. And mini horses... so cute >w< heavy work horses just hold a very special place in my heart. )

I showed this in the horse thread in Corral, but will here, too. Here's the Ardennais boy. Sadly, I'm moving in less than a month, so I will likely not see him a lot after since we'll be living too far away, and I'll have to start looking for a new horse to ride.
But loooook, he's so cute ;A;

He's gorgeous. So sorry to hear you'll be moving away  from him.

My favorite  horse breed is the Arabian. I love their fine tapered features. So elegant looking. I also really like Haflingers after I got to ride one named Diesel at the Kentucky  Horse Park some years back. Even got a Haflinger Breyer model that looks just like him at their gift shop right after. I also like Fresians and Gypsy Vanners.

He's beautiful! I love his little braid

Vanners are gorgeous. They actually were my favorite horse until I discovered Nanning 347 in a magazine, and that lead to my love of Friesians.

This is Nanning. His looks blew me away, he didn't even look real.

I wanted to go for equine science at one time in my life.. but im not a book person and I would of had to go to a university for that and not a tech college where it would be easier.
I also like Paints & Mustangs along with the rocky mountain horse.
