HELP! I've ruined a cotton candy pj case : (
« on: September 16, 2014, 04:00:00 AM »
Hi
Hope somebody can help!

I won a G1 Cotton Candy pyjama case. When she arrived she was filthy
With matted hair.
I covered her eyes to avoid scratches and chucked her in the washing machine (I had attempted to plait her hair so it wouldn't tangle)

Stupidly, I forgot the temperature. I think she was washed at 60 degrees.

Her body fur had gone into little tufts I suppose. So thought I'd put her in the dryer (cool setting) to fluff it up a bit. I think it might all go smooth again in time.

The main problem is her hair. Never have I had such a matted mess!!! Even the ends are difficult to get a comb through. It's stretching if I try too hard to untangle.

I'm gutted. I've wanted ones for ages as I had her as a child.

Anyone have any tips??

Thanks in advance : )

Soak her hair in fabric softener and people conditioner over night. It should make it easier to comb through

Send her to me!  I actually do lots of restoration work on ponies and the like. As soon as I get done updating my website, I will be opening a restoration service. I'd love to have a go at restoring a PJ case as a showcase piece.

My Tumblr has a post scheduled for tomorrow showing my restored German Skydancer. I've also done some pretty impressive hair fixes (Precious Gem Before and After, Grand Champion horse).

If you want to have a go yourself, be very careful with combing out the tangles. Slather lots of conditioner on the wet hair and gently comb it out, starting at the ends and working your way up. The mats have probably separated into clumps, so work on one at a time. Once you have all of the knots worked out, put more conditioner in the hair and grab a flat iron. This is very important- only use a flat iron on wet pony hair. Using the lowest setting, work the flat iron through small sections at a time. You want to move at a steady pace with the flat iron; keep it moving and don't let it set on one section of hair too long or you risk frizzing/melting it. Once the frizz has been tamed, rinse out the conditioner. The hair should dry out to a nice, soft and shiny finish.

If you'd like to send her to me for restoration, drop me a PM and we can work out details. If you want to have a go at it yourself, good luck! I'd love to see pictures :)

for her fur, use a tiny comb on it, like a hair lice comb.  It'll take a LOT of patience, but you can get it fluffed back up.

I've worked with laundered plushes before that have that terrible matted hair mess.  I take a really thick conditioner and really grease up the hair. Then, leaving the conditioner in (don't rinse yet), use a wide-tooth comb or pick to work out all the tangles, starting with a small bit, at the ends, and work your way up and through the rest of it. Then a smaller comb to get out small tangles.   Hand wash the case after you're done to get the conditioner out, and then air dry.  I agree with a small fine-toothed comb to fluff up the fur.

I'd also suggest some kind of metal tooth brush or comb. I use a cat slicker brush and it works wonderfully.

I ll second the suggestion for using a metal comb - its much kinder on plastic hair and causes less stretching :)

Good luck! I am sure you will get her looking great again.

Sorry for short reply last night, the battery on my phone was nearly flat.

Yes, I use a metal headline comb for all pony hair. I will soak her today. The hair stretching was really worrying. Her tails more lie a dreadlock at moment, with around 2 inches of stretched hair at the ends. She's been in wars!!

I will do my very best to get her looking lovely again. Thank you : )
