Someone else mentioned Fire and Ice/Lord of the Rings etc... Ralph Bakshi did some pretty awesome, out there stuff, another adultish one is Wizards (interesting and relevant themes). A great one for those into fantasy.

Wizards is AMAZING.  Also, if you can get your hands on it, Rock and Rule is worth a watch.

If non-cutesy Disney is up your alley, watch The Black Cauldron.

There are already some really great titles suggested, I'll try to add some that haven't been mentioned... there's "Felidae",  it's originally German (from 1994) but I found an english dubbed copy. It's a bit PG-13 at some points (gore, cats in heat lol [nothing racey is actually shown]), but an awesome watch none-the-less! This one is a series, but "The Maxx" (based on the comic books) is incredibly enjoyable as well. As far as new animation goes, I'm absolutely taken with the new "Tintin and the Secret of the Unicorn". I definitely back up the recommendations of any Bluth stuff (especially "The Secret of Nimh"), the "Gargoyles" series and "The Iron Giant"- did you know Lauren faust worked on that last one? If "Spirited Away" wasn't mentioned yet- it's a MUST watch in my book :) anything Ghibli is, really ("Grave of the Fireflies" and "Totoro" are my faves, even if the first title makes me cry like a baby!) <3

An interesting film to look up might be "the magic pony" or sometimes called "the humpback horse" from 1977 but it might be hard to find an english version.

It's a strange Russian Fairy tale, the animation is nice if the designs don't through you off (it's pretty old).  I always wondered how much in might have influenced MLP

What a strange coincidence - Watched this one last night for the first time whilst browsing Youtube! Also agreeing though, if you're looking for something not so kiddy, this is a must. I find it to be beautifully animated too.
...Probably shouldn't have watched it so late at night though, haha.

I'm so glad Felidae was brought up! I love that movie... but uncensored it's pretty adult.

How has nobody said Megamind yet? I thought that movie was brilliant. It's become one of my top favorites within this past year.

And The Land Before Time- the first one, is a very good film in its own right too. It's responsible for my childhood love of dinosaurs.

As for non-cute Disney, might I also recommend The Great Mouse Detective? It's not particularly dark, but it does have its moments of intensity, a great hero and great villain with a wonderful tension that plays out so nicely in the climax. It's another of my favorite films.

WALL-E and Up are some very good, mature films from Pixar, but my favorite Pixar movie is and always will be Finding Nemo. It may be a bit too cutesy for what you're looking for, but I think it has the most gorgeous animation.

Not a Lion King or a Dreamworks flick, or anything like that, but Waltz With Bashir is well worth watching. It's an animated documentary, with interviews from people who served during the Lebanon War in 1982. It was filmed, then animations were made of the interviews, there are also original sequences that depict what the people being interviewed are telling.

It's intense, and very graphic, but it's brilliant.

That's fine, I'm not looking for Dreamworks stuff! I'm not too good with really violent stuff, but this sounds really good, I might have to give it a go. Thanks!

NIHM comes to mind. So does Secret of Kells, but I think you mentioned that already.

I enjoyed Genius Party and Robot Carnival...
oh and Plague Dogs.
JESUS PLAGUE DOGS MY HEART WAS RIPPED OUT MY CHEST AND STAMPED UPON...

There's also a lot of Russian animation that is really good, but hard to find with subtitles.

Others are Le Chat du Rabbin and Persepolis.
