This is a subject I could go on... and on... and on about! :D

ANYTHING by Pixar (I am SOOO stoked for Brave to be released... it's ridiculous)....

You already know about Miyazaki... and The Secret of Kells (my absolutely FAV bit of animation in YEARS...)

If you like Stop Motion: Coraline (If you love Nightmare before Xmas... you'll LOVE this one), any of the Wallace & Gromit series... Corpse Bride.... and the upcoming Paranorman looks awesome as well!!!

Various TV series, not currently on TV: GARGOYLES (best... animated... tv series... EVER), Avatar: The Last Airbender... Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (more so than the original FMA...  but both series are excellent. Brotherhood is just more cohesive....). Batman Beyond (Best Batman ever!!).

Various TV series currently on TV: as someone already mentioned... the "followup series" to Avatar, is now on Nickelodeon... Legend of Korra; and only 3 episodes into it... and it's COMPLETELY EPIC!!! Young Justice (also epic! mostly because Greg Weisman... the creative genious behind Gargoyles... is heavily involved in it!)... Transformers Prime (Yup... Peter Cullen can read the phone book to me ANY day! ), and of course... THUNDERCATS!

Other animated movies: Surf's Up (sooooo much better than Happy Feet!), Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (I wish the story had been stronger, but the animation is spot on and a pleasure to watch!), Secret of NIMH (oldie but a goodie!).... Definately How to Train Your Dragon (have you SEEN the previews for the stage show!?!?)

GAH I know I have more down in my "collection"... but my brain is now mush...

I cried at UP also lol

I second How To Train Your Dragon!
And Despicable Me!  That one's a little awkward at times, but the story more than makes up for it  And the acting.  XD

"The Book of Kells" sounds awesome, especially for an illuminated manuscript freak like me, thanks for mentioning it :-)

I would definitely recommend the Last Unicorn (since it's my favourite movie EVER) but I also liked Miyazaki's Nausicaa and Tales from Earthsea. I know you said no Disney, but Robin Hood was so much a part of my childhood that I can't NOT recommend it, and Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame is an incredible movie, and not frilly in the least (as a kid, I never used to watch it because the cruelty of the baddie Claude Frollo scared me too much, so seriously, it's not really children's film) and is a very interesting interpretation of the book.

If you're looking for more adult-orientated stuff, then Fire and Ice is very good (a beautifully animated sword and sorcery flick), I must also admit to being impressed by Vampire Hunter D (I'm sorry, good taste!), the animated Lord of the Rings film is also an interesting curiosity, I'm also pretty sure there was a Cowboy Bebop film, which I guess can be watched without prior knowledge of the series. And if (and only IF) you don't mind watching people's heads exploding, then see Fist of the North Star, it's quite impressive if you don't mind animated violence.

And I'm sure there are many more, I just love animated movies :-)

I also recommend The Last Unicorn, since it's one of my favorite movies (and books) ever.

The Plague Dogs is an amazing film. Very dark and bleak. It was made by the same people who made Watership Down (which is also a great animated movie) and is based on another book by Richard Adams. Another one of my favorite books/movies ever.

If you like Ghibli then their lesser known films are worth seeing. Pom Poko, Whisper of the Heart, Only Yesterday...

Cats Don't Dance, 9, The Dark Crystal (if puppets count...), The Iron Giant, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, anything by Satoshi Kon.

I LOVE animated movies, so this list is going to be a little long.

Jungle Emperor Leo.  Absolutely beautiful movie, I also recommend Jungle Emperor Leo The Brave Can Change the Future (it hasn't been dubbed in English yet, but if you don't mind subtitles, you can find subs online).

The Prince of Egypt
Road to El-Dorado
Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron
The Swan Princess
Balto
Kung Fu Panda
Summer Wars
Ringing Bell
The Dog of Flanders
The Fox and the Hound and Bambi (I know you said you don't care for Disney movies, but I can't not recommend these)
The Last Unicorn
The Plague Dogs
Watership Down
The Cat Returns
Princess Mononoke
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
The Iron Giant
Anything Don Bluth
Cats Don't Dance

If you need more, there are plenty more I can recommend!!  :)

Oh wow... I've seen a couple of people recommend Don Bluth, and I absolutely concur with The Secret of NIMH. It is up there in my all time favourite movies - beautifully (no... stunningly) animated, and a courageous story. Don Bluth made it after he walked out on the cutsie-pie-ness of Disney, so it might be right up your alley, little.fox. It has grit, a great villain, lovely soundtrack, and if I were a rat, I might just marry Justin...

(ok, so I love this movie just a little bit....)

It's based on the book Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, but differs in many ways. I actually liked the movie more! Bluth did later re-collaborate with Disney I think, for An American Tale etc...

Someone else mentioned Fire and Ice/Lord of the Rings etc... Ralph Bakshi did some pretty awesome, out there stuff, another adultish one is Wizards (interesting and relevant themes). A great one for those into fantasy.

I'll also second Despicable Me, possibly the MOST quoted movie in our house!!

Looks like people have made some great recommendations so you have some good viewing ahead.  Another one from the era of the Last Unicorn is the Flight of Dragons - another of my favourites, though it might be tricky to find on DVD.

Happy viewing!

I was sceptical to Don Bluth, but I will def give The Secret of NIMH a watch now!

I have to agree with the Don Bluth movies, especially The Secret of NIMH.  But I might be a little biased, since he's my mother's first cousin.  :P  And he'd be happy to know that his movies are so loved!

OMG - you're kidding!!  LOL! I hope I had my facts right, then!!!   If you ever see him, tell him I absolutely worship that movie!!!

ok - just had a quick read on Wiki!! I did have it wrong, later films like American Tale and Land Before Time etc were collaborations with Speiberg, not Disney - oops!!

I second Don Bluth's films. :) They have such distinctive animation, very fluid & gorgeous.
The Iron Giant is also brilliant.
