Japanese Takara MLP Manga
« on: April 10, 2015, 10:48:57 AM »
On the insert included with Takara My Little Ponies, there was an advertisement for a pony manga running in the young children's magazine "Yoiko". I decided to do some investigating into this and I have found one issue of it. I know some of you would probably like to know what it's all about, so I decided to share my findings. :)

This is the March issue of 1986. The Takara Ponies were probably out of production by this point, and it states in the comic that this is the last one.

As you can see it's more of an illustrated story than a comic. The artwork looks exactly the same as the Takara MLP box art. I don't know how many issues these stories ran for, or if they were all done in this style (I would guess that they were). It must have started some time in 1985, and the magazine was released monthly. As a bonus it seems to include instructions for crafts you can make. Otherwise there's not much to say about it. The story in this one is that it's spring and Pinky and Milky go outside to look at the nature. They are amazed. The end. It was intended for very young children after all, and thus does not have a lot of text. Nowadays with G4 we are getting both official and unofficial pony comics from Japan, but before that these were probably the only pony stories made for the Japanese market. So there is some novelty in that.

I don't see anything with Mario in this. The first Super Mario Bros. game was released at the end of 1985, so it probably hadn't gained enough popularity yet. But a few years later you would see Mario comics in almost every manga magazine for children (including ones with Princess Peach aimed at girls).

This issue features amongst others Doraemon, Magical Emi, Obake no Q-tarou, Uchuusen Sagittarius and Changeman/Flashman.

There was also an advert at the back for another toyline by Takara called "Jewel" (that one would be hard to search for! XD) which looks pretty cute.

Ah, according to the wiki it said there was a Mario comic in the 85 october magazine-- I figured my brother would be interested in it since he was  Mario fan. (It would make looking for the magazine a little bit worth while... ) Maybe the year is wrong on the webpage.

cute dolls :)

here is a playset: http://diaclone.net/gattaioh/koeda/town/j002/index.html
and here is an advertisement: http://diaclone.net/gattaioh/koeda/town/juel/juel.jpg

I wonder how big they are in comparison...

I see. There could still have been one in that particular issue to advertise the game which had just come out at the time. Bet it would be interesting to see, since the Mario art style and storyline wouldn't have been as finalized back then.

Thanks! That's cool to see! I have an affinity for toys cast in translucent plastic. :D Maybe we would have seen something similar to this for the Takara MLP toyline if it had continued.

Some more searching and these little jewelchan girls are smaller than the adults. boo.

It's my goal to one day find some sort of playset for my girls (that maintains the feel of 80s Japan).

Perhaps a Licca or Charmy Twin playset would fit the bill. :)

This is from a foldout with prizes you could win as these type of magazine often had. Unfortunately part of it has been cut off, so this is all there is.
