I'm pretty sure that there are punching machines that automatically pierce the plastic in order to root the hair. It would be a similar motion to a sewing machine that would poke a needle through fabric to thread it. I remember a "pre-woodshop" class I had to take in middle school where we set coordinates into a machine using a computer, and it automatically lifted and pressed to shave a picture into a wooden block. I think it's the same concept here- like, they could set the coordinates on the machine for how many times the hairing tool would punch the hair into the plastic, how far apart the plugs would be, how many plugs there would be at all, etc. This of course would vary based on the pose and body variations (like babies, Pony Friends, or Sea Ponies).

On the Sea Pony Utopia, I remember a blurb about a Wavedancer variant from Y3 rather than Y2 that had hair plugs much more spread out, and therefore made her the "thin haired variant." The theory may be that since they were ceasing production of the adults that year, they wanted to use the supplies they had ordered for them sparingly and use that shade of blue on the Ponies that they knew they could sell.

The Transformers Wiki is always a super helpful source of info :) This is a good overview of the plastic moulding process.

I found this you tube tour of a Chinese toy factory a while back. Granted these aren't ponies, but the same techniques apply:  paint apps, molds, etc.

Actually, providing they are all straight male ponies, wouldn't that make them happy? Much less competition. :P

I actually sent a letter into Discovery channel asking them if they could potentially go to the Hasbro factory in Canada and show us "How Ponies are Made"... haven't seen it yet on there so I'm sure it fell on deaf ears... but really, seeing how any toy like that is made would be super cool!

I used to work in a plastics factory, but we made storage containers that didn't get painted or anything.

"How It's Made" is a great show! It should totally have an episode on ponies  ^.^

That's really neat! I always wondered how they got the paint on them :) I like that he kept calling him Alvin.... it's Simon

Here's an interesting blog that has a sort of documentation of things from the 2008 Fair. About a quarter of the way down the page there's some pictures and explanations of the making of our little equine friends. It's not very in-depth but it does make for an interesting read.  :nerdy:

I was wondering this same thing the other night. A few years ago a friend and I were playing with the pile of ponies, and he was inspecting the see-through ones. You can see some dribbles on the inside of them, and he was trying to find any seam-lines... it was fun to watch him try to figure it out. I still don't really know, I would love to do a tour and watch them being made! Especially the moulding part- I can imagine the hair and paint parts, but the moulding is too much for me to imagine.
Thanks so much to Calico_Star for her beautiful work on my Avatar!
