an expensive hobby???
« on: August 14, 2013, 12:36:50 PM »
Hello pony fans!
I'm starting to collect ponies again after finding my childhood ones a few months ago. There are a few USA ponies I'd love to add to the herd, however these are rather elusive in the UK and seem to go for sometimes silly amounts.
What I'm wondering is the current prices night glider taf,  mimic and so soft buttons in good condition go for in the USA,  as I frequently purchase from there and wondered if it would be cheaper to import them directly, Rather than try to outbid the hoards on ebay!!
thank you for your time.  :lovey:

Are you thinking of trying to buy them here? I'm not sure what "import directly" means. :lookround:

I'm bad with prices, lol. ;)

I don't know what the current prices are (sorry!).   I think you would get a better deal buying or trading from a fellow collector here.

I would suggest looking for lots on eBay where they may be tucked in.  You'll pay more for a lot, but the price per pony is lower.  You can always sell the ponies you don't want!  It's how I can afford to collect. However I think you'd pay and arm and a leg in shipping costs to the UK for large lots!

130.00 for Mimic recently.  Night Glider around 35.00 and not sure about So Soft Buttons, but I think she is a very low priced pony.  Mimic is often over 100.00 and the lower priced ones are usually ones with issues.

Yes buy them straight from the USA. Just wondered if they would be any cheaper in their home country. If a mimic does come up she's usually over £150. I just wondered what her typical price went for outside the uk. May have to start saving :p she's the last te I need to complete both sets.  :)

Typically, the only difference you'll find in prices are from current releases - for example, G4 European exclusives tend to get pricier here in the States, just like the Target exclusives tend to be pricier for those in Europe.  The only other time I've seen European vs US ponies go for strange amounts is with the G2s, since so many of them were European only.  Shipping costs do a lot to alter the value of a pony ;)

Yes but you have to consider shipping because what little you might save you may make up in shipping too since a lot of sellers are now using the Global Shipping Program. Uggg

As a seller, I hate the Global Shipping Program.  I tried it once, not knowing how much extra eBay charges.  I was horrified when I saw they charged someone $34 to ship to the UK for two ponies.  I mean, the bidder saw what the quote was and was willing to pay that much, but I felt awful about it.

The first two that you have listed are more on the higher price. As for SS Bottoms I think that she is lower price pony.

I have purchased quite a few ponies from the usa. So far most shipping for 1-2 ponies is under $13. I've luckily never had any import tax bills on any purchases.  Even when I *cringe* spent $60 on three ponies. A mint twilight, a  pinwheel and sky flier, who was absolutely full of rust!! I was surprised that once cleaned though out she was practically mint.

The USA release ponies are priced at their international value on Ebay, their true value to collectors.  Interestingly enough, it's the opposite of what you were thinking - the UK/Euro ponies are cheaper to obtain from their home countries than from other sources in the USA. :D

It just depends on what pony you're looking at. Doll collecting /pony collecting will always be expensive. Nearly all the ponies that you actually fall in love with are actually really pricey, imo. Unless you get realllllllyyyyy lucky and find her or any of the ponies on your wishlist in a thrift store or yard sale.
I'm always looking for a Blythe accessories. PM me for any info!cloud_weaver is the best sister ever!!!
