So I have a really weird question...about shampoo...
« on: May 03, 2012, 08:04:01 AM »
Hiii.

So I've noticed that the boyfriend has had problems with an itchy scalp and dandruff for a while.  When I asked him about it, he said that he's always had a problem, and that he's tried dandruff shampoos before and they haven't worked.  Obviously I took this as a challenge.

I was just wondering if any of you lovely people knew of a solution, like something homeopathic or a hard to find brand that would work?

I couldn't think of where else to ask.  xD

1. Does he scratch with his nails on his scalp a lot? For a long time when I was younger I had dandruff and found out it was because I was scratching at my scalp while shampooing, instead of massaging it in (along with scratching at m scalp too much in general) and it helped to stop using my nails.

2. Go shampoo-less for a while. Okay, it sounds gross, but a lot of people (with great hair!) don't use shampoo. You sort of taper off of it, going one day without it, shampoo, then two after that, shampoo, then three... Chemical-filled shampoos could be the problem. I tried dandruff shampoo and it only made my scalp worse -_- More chemicals = more itch, for me. In my case, using better (and sadly more expensive...) products was all I needed, but for some people shampoo really does more damage than good. The more you use it, the more you strip your hair of it's natural oils... the less you use it, the slower those oils build up, and the less you need it. My friend from high school used shampoo only once every two weeks and he was a contestant for voted best hair in our class xD He really did have some nice hair.

3. Go all natural! Natural shampoo, that is. Check out health stores or nice organic friendly stores for shampoos with less harsh chemicals, more natural goodness. Aim for natural dandruff relief and/or moisturizing.

Those are just some things I know that could help. They helped me, anyways. I need to get back onto better shampoo because I haven't been buying the good stuff and it's coming back. If it doesn't clear up on him with gentler handling and a few trial/error attempts with different shampoos or no shampoo at all, I would maybe ask a doctor about it. It could be a skin condition of sorts.

Dandruff shampoo, in general, is too full of chemicals to properly treat the real problem - a dry scalp.  He should use a very gentle shampoo (any kind, preferably extremely natural) and condition really well for a few weeks (natural conditioners of course, or even home-made ones.  Tons of recipes exist online.)  Make sure he massages it in really well and leaves it on for a few minutes before rinsing.

Try to get him to brush his hair before washing it.  The stimulations supposed to help with getting it cleaner.

Also: hes not sick, is he? If youre sick or not eatting right, that can be a big issue

Is he getting enough of the B vitamins? Perhaps a multivitamin would do him better than a new shampoo.

Well, it can be caused by a lot of things.

I had dandruff when I was a child/teen. It was caused by stress and anxiety. However, I did a few things to make it stop as well:

- Scratching the scalp might be a reason for dandruff. It will irritate the scalp and make it "peel". We're talking about skin here.

- Using a good shampoo will help A LOT. I used normal stuff from the supermarket before, but after using proper professional shampoo from hairdressers it helped a great deal. (You can get HUGE bottles from Ebay and hair products shops. They are a bit more expensive, but they will last for months.)

- Being stressed will make the dandruff worse.

- Using anti-dandruff shampoos CAN make it worse. It made it worse to me when I tried it (I even got dandruff on my eyebrows !)

I hope this helps :)

Hubby seems to like the Hand & Shoulders brand.

I'd also suggest a natural Tea Tree Oil shampoo - they are great moisterizers and a healthy, well cleaning product. Usually lice removal shampoos have tea tree oil in them.

I'd say give a natural/organic shampoo a try. :3

Tea tree oil and shampoo! I know it's usually used for lice, but it works on skin conditions and dandruff, too. A little pricey, mind you, but it works.

My hubby gets dandruff too.  The anti-dandruff shampoos usually work on him but he finds if he wears his cap for long periods his dandruff is worse.

For the longest time, I fought with itchy scalp and dandruff, so I thought using products like Head and Shoulders or Selsum Blue helped. Used them religiously.

In the end, though, they didn't really work.

What I DID find that worked is Suave Professionals Almond and Shea Butter shampoo and Aussie Sydney Smooth conditioner ( 1 liter pump bottle for me. XP I go through a lot of conditioner. ). Keeps my scalp AND hair naturally moisturized AND smooth.

And nooooo itch! X3

My mum makes an all-natural shampoo soap bar that is moisturizing and helps with dandruff (it's made with castor oil, which I think is the ingredient that helps).
She said I could send you a bar if you'd like to give it a try. ^-^
