My lexicon makes it very evident that I'm a creature of my culture. I've picked up a lot of idioms, sayings, and phrases from books, TV, and film. Has anyone else done this? In my daily vocabulary I say;

Okie Dokie Lokie, it's obvious where I picked this up.
Horseapples, also picked this up from FiM. There was a scene in Fall Weather Friends where Dash exclaims 'Oh horseapples!', it stuck with me, and it has thoroughly cut down on my use of four letter words.
Sure as Shire talk, I don't remember which of the Hobbits said this in Lord of The Rings, but it's made its way into my regular rotation.
Frak, oh man, Battlestar Galactica. I didn't get into that show till after it had wrapped up, and when I got into it, I got into it, hard. While working full time, I managed to watch the entirety of the series in nine days. After which I was saying 'frak' a lot, a lot. My usage of it has since waned, but I still find myself saying 'frak me' on a regular basis.

I'm sure there's more, but they're so ingrained in me I can't name them off the top of my head.

How 'bout you, what have you picked up from what you watch or read?

I make up my own things or on occasion pick them up from friends. Can't say I know of any I ever picked up directly from an entertainment source.

Uncouth from FiM. The scene where it's used was timed so perfectly from AB's belch to AJ's Eeexactly.

People can usually tell if I've been reading to many transformer things, mostly because "Slag" suddenly replaces some of the other 4 letter words in my vocabulary. I suppose that's a good thing though. Doesn't sound quite as bad. >>

When I was a kid, I was an early reader but delayed with verbal skills.  I was reading at a high school level at age 6 but I couldn't carry on a conversation.  I picked up most of my idiomatic expression from books, rather than things people said, and it made me something of freak.  It would shock people when I'd come to the dinner table and come out with a Dickensian or Twain-inspired idiom.  I remember once I brought a painting I made to show my parent's friends and I described it as being "a good painting, at bottom."  I still use "at bottom" instead of "basically".  XD

I tend to do this when I am reading long series of books where they say the same phrases constantly.  When I read Catherine Coulter's Bride series I pick up "bloody hell".  I am reading Keri Arthur's Riley Jensen guardian series right now and the main character says "*word removed*" alot and I have found myself saying that more.  I have also picked up "bullocks" from Transformers II and words like "shall" from the books I read.  I know there are more things like this but I can't remember them at the moment.

Hundreds of sayings. Mostly said without realising.

Many of my terms are from my fave childhood prog 'Maid Marion and Her Merry Men' written by Blackadder actor Tony Robinson.
Phrases such as "My sword got stuck in my tights. Oh no! I've laddered them!" when I make a mistake.
'Happy Bloopy!' when I greet someone on a special day.
"It's Pancake day. Yes it's Pancake day. It's P-p-p-p-p-p-p-p-pancake day" plus numerous others.

And from Star Wars trilogy, phrases such as "You low down, stuck up, scruffy-looking Nerf Herder" which is a useful one.

And from Sesame Street when I'm counting sometimes I get carried away and in a Count Von Count voice "That's two sheep! Ha ha ha".

From cartoon Bucky O' Hare: "Let's croak us some toads!"

And from 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom'' , Short Round's phrases such as "I step where you step! I touch nothing!" and "Maybe he like OLDER women?"

And from the Ewoks cartoon of yesteryear "E-chiwawa!" or however you spell it.

Oh, and every time I see or hear a firework (which in my city isn't just firework night and new years eve  but also Diwali and many Indian and Pakistani weddings too) I can't help declaring "Fireworks, Gandalf! Fireworks!" in a natural sounding West Country accent..

You know, I have co-opted River Tams line 'this food is problematic', though rather than saying 'this food is problematic', I replace food with whatever is currently being problematic.

Tumblr and the Doctor Who fandom have gotten me saying things like "Oh my Gallifrey" and "Holy Rassilon" as opposed to using the Lord's name in vain.  :P
