When you go garage sale-ing...what do you look for?
« on: May 09, 2015, 07:40:10 PM »
So for those of us who scour garage sales week in and week out, there's always stuff that we keep a cautious eye out for.  So I'm curious - what types of items catches your eye?

For me, aside from stuff for my kids and house, I'm also on the lookout for the following types of items:

-Scrapbook supplies - *especially wood mounted stamps from Stampin' Up! and PSX* (they both hold retail value pretty well, and some are quite valuable
-Vintage toys - i.e. Polly Pocket, Littlest Pet Shop, Moon Dreamers, Popples, etc.  Sadly I don't know enough about boy toys to be knowledgeable. =/
-Older Video games - again, some can be quite valuable!  Especially Zelda games!  Bought one yesterday for $2, and it's going for $25 on eBay. ^^
-Tamagotchi's - usually a quick sell on eBay for anywhere between $10 and $20.

So share your knowledge!  What goodies do you hunt?

Ponies are the reason I go to yard sales.  The only other thing I regularly pick up when I see it is Pokémon merch.  Sometimes I get dinosaur toys and LPS. If I saw some other 80's toys like Fairy Tails, Glo Friends, Jem dolls, etc I would  get them.  But I've never seen those.

I usually look for ponies (of course; mostly G1s) and vintage Littlest Pet Shops. I sometimes buy other vintage toys if I know the approximate resale value, to help along my collection fund. :) I also keep an eye out for manga, anime, and books for myself. Once I got the first two volumes of Fruits Basket for a decent price, and another time I got the Prince of Egypt soundtrack I'd been wanting. I usually go to thrift stores, etc. instead of garage sales because I feel bad if I don't buy anything at a garage sale , but I do love rummaging through second-hand stuff.

Hard for me to make a definite list of all the things I look for at garage sales, yard sales, estate sales, etc. as I'm kinda all over about the things I collect as well as the things that I'm looking to get into. I just go to these sales with an open mind and buy whatever catches my eye. xD

I tend to keep an eye out for kitschy 90s things, usually anything brightly-coloured or sporting that kind of iridescent mirror ball effect. Dolphins are forever on my radar as well, especially cute cartoony ones. :)

I haven't gone in years >>

usually when I come across one I look for G1 ponies, but also kids books and craft supplies...anything I can turn around and make something new.  Old beads and earrings are awesome.  you can use the earrings as pretty push pins.

Woodwind/Brass instruments? Of course, the kinds I want now are the more valuable kinds that aren't standard to be found at even a thrift shop of any level (English horn, bass clarinet, baritone saxophone, etc.) but I don't know... It might be neat to get a trombone for cheap or something! Bass clarinets are kind of common, too, so that might be an ultimate garage sale find for me. I don't think I could actually justify purchasing one new...

G3 MLPs, too, of course!

Have hardly been to any garage sales, though (went to some a couple of Saturdays ago, though!). I work nights, and I'm a bit grouchy in the mornings after I get off, and just want to be at home relaxing, so... You know. xD

Anything and everything toy related!!  Really boys toys girls if its cheap enough I'll pick it up.  I've been doing this so long I follow my gut to see if its a good deal.  I love girls and boys toys.

The only thing I don't like about buying toys is that people assume your picking them up for your imaginary kids.

I'm looking for a few video games let me know what you have next time!!

I keep an eye out for anything old, or anything that I think will go for more than it is priced at.

- Animal Supplies - especially dog crates and bird cages, but any cage, carrier, or toy (hamsters wheels, high end dog toys like kongs, expensive collars).
- Antique porcelain, but it has to be unchipped and unbroken or VERY rare/old to be worth anything. (Picked up a Dresden Pug for ten cents, sold it for $250 and it had a broken leg that had been glued back on).
- Any type of vintage toy, as well as bits and pieces (like he-man accessories).
- Box lots of super cheap barbies, I clean them, clothe them, and sell for $2 each.
- Plants for my garden.
- Tools if it is something we need.

Other than that, it is really hit 'er miss. I pick up a huge variety of stuff. But to resell, vintage toys, and animal carriers bring us the most.
