I get about 15 gems a day.  3 shops, 2 videos, and a few lucky swarming drops.  And I feed the shrines a lot too.  I get 2 free skips a day so if I'm not using them to skip an event I'll set one of my shops to produce 2 gems and then skip twice for 4 gems. 

How do you get free skips?

Get your kitten to step on your phone and accidentally buy a TON of gems and get VIP status.

Thanks for the adds everyone;) This is my 4th freaking time restarting the game because of dying phones. Finally back to level 49 but its frustrating because i had almost the buildings and ponies up to level 95 before. GL tried helping me send a cloud saved version of my game but it was from a restart at 23 when i gave up on it:/

If for some reason the CRUSADERS code doesn't work, try making it singular: CRUSADER (seems to be more of an Android issue)

Do the codes need to be in all caps? I tried earlier and neiter cutiemark or crusader worked.

The only way to type them is in caps.  Has your game updated to the CMC quests yet?

Heads up...if you go to ponyville and select the store, in the ponies section, there are three new fillies.  You can earn them through earning items like baseballs, globes and shopping bags.  I don't know if the event has started yet, but I got a jumpstart on earning the items to win the ponies through assigning some tasks. ^_^

The fillies need 70 items each, so they'd better stick around a long while... a few hours jumpstart isn't going to make a difference.

Which shops give you gems? I want to take advantage of that sale but only have enough for one thing and I want to make it count!

To the best of my knowledge, none of the ones actually purchaseable through gems will be gem shops.  I think those are ones you have to buy with real money (and there is a current one for sale in a bundle for $29.99 :/ ). Though one was available as a prize through the pinkie pie party sidequest a year or so ago where you could earn Spike.

Exactly. To get shops that produce gems you usually need to spend actual money. Though, the chocolate shop is useful as a task with PP to earn tokens in some quests and Cloud Storage was part of the hotel side quest to get Zesty Gormand.
