Greetings!
« on: December 13, 2014, 06:03:31 PM »
Hey everyone,

I'm not much of a pony collector but I have a few friends that are and I love the G4 Cartoon. I am however a big action figure collector of various franchises.
I'm also a CG artist for video games and have a lot of experience working with 3d printers. So recently I started making my own figures. and by populair suggestion by my friends I'm currently working on my first pony figure and i was hoping it could share my progress here among people who are probably a lot more knowledgeable about MLP figures than I am :)

Hi SoaringSentenial

What kind of action figures do you collect?  I have quite a few myself and my brother is a huge collector of many different franchises.  LOTR, SW, X-Men, TWD, GoT...

I can't wait to see your custom ponies :)

I'm not a one franchise kind of guy when it comes to collecting. mostly it's a matter of i get the main character or a few of the characters i think are cool in any particular franchises. i have several of the playarts figures from halo and mass effect. I also have some gundam Gunpla kits. a ton of Disney infinity figures. Just whatever catches my fancy really.

I'll be making a thread in the arts section of the forum for it but here's a sneak peek of what i'm working on right now. It's a fully articulated figure of princess Luna. she stands 10 inches tall :)

and here's the 3d printed prototype (She's still missing a few pieces so i can't assemble the legs yet.)

:newpony: Welcome to the Arena.  I might need to ask a few questions in regards to 3-D printing as my daughter Robotics team just won a 3-D printer and I already have plans for making model horses so gonna need to find out what software and such for them and me.  Your work is super.

Thank you and Congrats with your daughter winning a 3d printer. Feel free to ask whatever you like, I'll answer what I can.
It's a great hobby but it can get kind of complex once you get to the nitty gritty

The software i'm using is called Autodesk Maya. But it's a professional software package mainly used for video games and visual effects in movies. (also it's 4000 dollars) Unless you or your daughter is already familiar with 3d modeling I'd recommend starting out with blender 3d. You can get it here: http://www.blender.org/
It's free and for the purposes of 3d printing it can do the job just as well as Maya. Another program I'd recommend getting is Netfabb. this program will let you check your model for print ability, wall thickness size etc. (there is a paid version but for the purposes of checking your 3d models the free version works just fine. however every 3d printer has it's own rules as to how it works and how you should prepare your models.

Another great resource to check out is http://www.thingiverse.com/ here you can download ready to print models for most home 3d printers.

I'm sure you'll think of plenty of questions so fire away or send me a PM. :)
