Do you volunteer?
« on: March 10, 2012, 02:09:51 AM »
I volunteer with a group that help out our local Police & public. We drive around Thurs/Fri & Sat nights for approximately 6 hours looking for people up to no good then report what we see to the cops. We''re their eyes & ears, nothing more... It's very interesting & day time patrol is completely different from drunken Sat night ones.. my goodness do they have to put up with a lot of crap...

So do you volunteer & where?

Oeh that sounds reallu cool! Driving and looking dir shady people  :P

I volunteer also. It is a animal ambulance. So if there are wounded animals (birds, dogs, cats, bats and much more) we pick them up and give them first help if needed and bring them to specialists how can fix them up. Really reat work! But sometimes we have to pick up dead animals that are hit by a car or drowned and that is really sad  :(.

We foster puppies for a local rescue off and on. It's a full time job when you have a litter so we take breaks between. Currently we have no litters but I'm sure we will have more eventually.

I work with a local youth GLBTQ group as a counselor.  We do community outreach for local food banks and also help out our local Food Not Bombs as well as give support to each other.

I would love to foster animals when I have more space available.

When at uni I helped out at a multicultural local school's Nursery class initially once a week then in uni hols when school was still on. I loved the three and four year olds.
Then when I got a job at a school,  I volunteered at a disabled children's respite unit for 4 years daily each school holiday. I ended up after a long battle with the council got a casual post there so I now get paid for it, and on Saturdays too. I also used to be a Special Needs Support Worker at kids church on Sunday mornings supporting 2 young rascals, one with possible ADHD, one with Downs.
havne't got time for official volunteering now, but I end up taking work home with me to make stuff for the kids I work with anyway!

I've been a Girl Scout leader for 3 years now. Meetings every other week, leader's meeting once a month, CPR and First Aid every 1 to 2 years, cookie sales, campouts and field trips. It's a lot of work but well worth it!

But sometimes we have to pick up dead animals that are hit by a car or drowned and that is really sad  :( .
When I was in high school, I volunteered at a wild animal rehab center! We were the ones people would bring the injured animals to. We didn't take dogs, cats, or other pets, only wild animals, usually ones that had be hit by cars or baby birds that had lost their parents, but sometime more unusual animals like owls and baby otters. The goal was always to eventually re-release the animal, and it was rare that we had an animal that couldn't be released, which was nice. Rabbits on the other hand...they were awful and almost always died no matter what we did. We'd eventually get to a point where it wasn't sad anymore, just frustrating and made you hate rabbits.

As a graduate student, I would volunteer at events that requested my department's "Insect Petting Zoo". Exactly what it sounds like. That was always a lot of fun.

I used to.

When I had no job I worked in a charity shop for a couple of days a week, until said shop was closed.

I then went on to volunteer at the college I studied at as a tutor assistant in the media department (i.e. the film students). I basically did tech stuff, answered student questions and all that kind of thing. It was really cool and I learned alot while teaching a little myself. I also decided being a tech wasn't too bad a job if I wanted to pursue it. Aaaand, now I'm on a higher level of the course I was helping to teach...

I miss the charity shop greatly if I'm honest, lots of quirky people and more quirky stuff coming in and the wage I'm on at my current job, I might be better off quitting and working in another charity shop...

But volunteering, yes! I think it can be a great experience :D

I used to volunteer before...certain things happened in my life. I volunteered at various theatres selling candy and tickets and ushering. I also used to volunteer at Riding for the Disabled, helping out with the horses there.

Until I graduated I volunteered twice a week at a local no-kill cat shelter.  It was the best thing ever.  I even worked my way up to being a supervisor there, and I'd work on our adoption day, where we were open to the public, and show kitties to people to try and get them homes.  I'd still be doing it but the shelters around here are sucky.
