oooh, more gorgeous art...

and yes, i do draw expressions, i like doing it. what bothers me more is angles, and all the things that make a comic interesting. panels, characters in interesting positions and such (like a jumping character, view from below or things like that)

Bah- Don't let that stop you :) Honestly! If people aren't paying you for it then just give it a go and do it. My first comic was nothing exciting panel wise. I had to take life drawing for 2 terms before my angles got adventurous XD IT's honestly a thing of just doing it. You'll improve :)

Basically, don't not do a comic cause you think it'll be bad. EVERYONE starts off bad. I started off bad. Those that don't start off bad actually did start off bad- they're just hiding the bad stuff from you. It's hard to do your first comic. I must admit. It's honestly not a daunting thing after your first though. That first book hurdle is one that can only be taken head on, then left in the past. Do something that you don't mind not being awesome. Even if your poses are boring, you'll learn alot from it, and get better from there :) Backgrounds aren't so scary in comic form cause you rarely do large panels of background. Just having a simple background will put your characters in a location. They'll be surrounded by speech bubbles anyway so simple backgrounds are fine.

Artists have a bad habit of putting their abilities down. I nearly didn't do my first published comic. I was talked into it cause my friends did the script while I did the art

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

My first comic. I made SO MANY mistakes with this, but you know? I DID IT. Tht'as more than so many artists can say. I didn't stop there though. I've made alot of comics since this one. I'm actually relaunching this cause it got put on hiatus. I tore my drawing hand and couldn't use it for nearly a year. I improved in art after I got back into it andd now it looks crap. The new art is SO much nicer, and it's longer :)

Anyways though, if encouragement or advice it is you need, I'm 120% happy to give it :) Goodness knows that I always regretted not getting help while I was learning, and when I did get it, I was SO grateful for it :) Do it however you like to do it. IF working from a script is your thing, do that, if doing it straightout is, then do that. What ever is easiest. Don't stress if it's crap, and most importantly, HAVE FUN.  I work scriptless alot.  For large stories or complex text it's not a good idea to freestyle. I freestyled Narcolepsy , but that was an intense process cause I had to make the text make sense, and suit the art. I happen to have experience behind me now so it was a little organic, but still not a good idea for big plots.

And most importantly, DO EET! I love reading comics :) If you want help, just ask and I'll happily give you pointers ^^

Well, I havent' really given you any hints yet XD I mean, there isn't alot to doing comics except having a story and then art. Oh! For your first comic, a big tip for panelling is the more panels you have, the slower time progresses. If you want a short snappy scene like a punch, then a before and after shot is all you need, while a conversation or a loving glance or something that takes a while should get more panels to slow the moment down :) That's about all that is handy to you right now. When you've done a few, I can give more pointers, but for your first, it's best to not think about it and just do it :) Panel pacing isn't something that's too hard to remember though cause when you're told it, it's obvious, but not before XD

Heh- I'm not too good at just giving encouraging comments so being able to give helpful pointers like this makes me feel slightly useful here XD I'm a bit afraid of insulting a new artist or trodding on toes or something :< IF anyone wants any help, I can give help on pretty much any aspect of art that's not the form of the pony. I'm not good at that ^^; The rest is all generic art knowledge, and polishing up techniques :) It's all case by case basis though that kind of stuff >.<

 don't worry - just give critique and help when it is requested, then i don't think you will step on anyone's toes.
and i'll be sure to show you the progress on my comic, when i have started.

What Lina said  :)  I love getting constructive crit, it's the best way to improve!  And you are never impolite about it, so I wouldn't see why anyone would be offended.

I love the comic panels, they are incredible!  I had a comic when I was little, it was about a cat named Lucy.  I re-read it a couple years ago and gawd, it was terrible!  XD  But I was so proud of it at the time!

Should I open a critique thread for those that want artistic help? I can't help with pony form, but perhaps others my give help on that?

Why were you ashamed of it? Of course you can do better now- accept that. Younger you was still proud of that comic and put her full effort in. That must count for something. IT may be childish, but it was the best you could do at the time. You should look at your old art in pride :)

Those are some pretty neat looking images you have in this thread and bravo for doing comics. I had an assignment to do four pages once and it nearly killed me. I also really love the minimal color poster you did. That, is pretty darn cool plus I like how you incorporated the diamonds from the cards into his tie.

As for starting a crit thread I think that could be cool. I also love getting feedback too so if you do make one, I'll probably post there  .

Actually, I find short comics difficult to do, not long ones ^^; Mostly cause of the plot. I don't think in short stories as a rule. Comics aren't a fast thing to draw I must admit. To do it right, it takes some time but if you think about it, comics are actually on big complex picture that happens to be easier to put together than a standard complex picture. Easier cause instead of details, you fill up the page with progressions of pictures. Why was it hard for you, if I can ask? There are ways of taking the stress off with comics. You might be loading yourself with unnecessary pressure :)

I was inspired by the 21st James Bond movie with Daniel Craig, Casino Royale. The intro for that blew my mind!  :whoa:  The character in the picture is a heavy gambler which is why I had the cards and diamonds. If he were to become an MLP (WIP ;) ) then his cutie mark would incorporate the Ace of spades somehow :) That's his card- the card of Judgement. It's how his character lives. He's very crime noir. I created him for a Phoenix Wright Fanfic. He's.... a manipulator. Like his father XD He's an awesome character (Lol, I created him when I was high on codeine XD Damn, that stuff shouldn't be taken by a creative person like me >.< ).

A crit thread would be good I think, but I'll need to be a little strict with how much you ask for cause I can't give general crits here. I can see that coming. People asking how they can improve. That's too much to answer.  Let me think about it :)

The reason I struggled on it was because at the time my figure drawing and understanding of perspective were not as advanced as they are now. By no means am I perfect but only second year in college verses where I am now? I think if I took a gander at it now I'd be able to get one right. But, since I prefer to do single piece illustrative work I'm not too likely to attempt another one.

Ah ha, I was wondering what it was that inspired the character and he sounds pretty interesting. I'd love to see the pony version too and I'm sure once you get to it, it'll be as cool as that one.

I was pretty sure that was going to be the general idea behind it. Crits in general tend to get lengthy. Probably something more along the lines of a 'I know there is something not quite right about this piece can you help?' sort of thing. I've seen those work pretty well on other boards.

I'm not sure how I'm going to colour him actually, I started with a warm grey, but I'm not so sure now. I'm learning epoxy resin to flatten out his curves though cause although Zeth isn't bulky, he's REALLY not feminine, and I'm making him out of a Pinkie Pie base to match his girlfriend, Sarah.

More art of Zeth Gant though:-

I named this 'What were you saying?' cause of his vaguely interested sideways glance. Done in pencils. I think I used cheap pencils too O.o Just a 9B. Not anymore.

The cover of an art book I made of Sarah and Zeth in matching bride and groom outfits, with Sarah being the Queen of hearts, and shooting him in his heart with her special synthetic blood filled gun pellets. This is the costume I'm basing her pony off. Inked by hand, coloured with Photoshop CS2. Text in Illustrator CS2

Before Sarah was created, Zeth tag teams with my friend's OC, Sean. Since I couldn't take Sean for my own purposes, I had to replace her role by another character. Thus, Sarah Cottontail was created.

A teaser comic that I was asked to make available as a print of the story Zeth is in. You can sorta see what kind of person he is. I've since RPed him alot so he's changed a little. His plotting ways haven't changed though :)
