ANOTHER Doll ID! This Time - 50's (?) Fashion Doll with No Marks
« on: November 11, 2014, 05:27:21 PM »
I've been a busy Spiff at the thrifts today!  Found this (gorgeous) little lady and can't, for the life of me, find ANY information on her:

Looks like maybe a Mary Hoyer? I am not sure.  The dress itself doesn't have any little tag on it?

Nothing at all!  She is quite mysterious.  I've named her Evelyn until I can find out her true identity.  She may be in a witness protection program.

She looks very much like a Mary Hoyer doll...perhaps she's a knock-off?

She has rooted hair, sleep eyes, jointed strung body, and is articulated at the torso...so mysterious!

Oh! Oh!  She may be a Uneeda Tiny Teen Suzette Doll 1957-1960s

http://dollreference.com/uneeda_tinyteen_suzette_bob_dolls.html

Post Merge: November 11, 2014, 05:42:26 PM

Gah! No Uneeda mark...

...maybe Little Miss Revlon?

Post Merge: November 11, 2014, 05:43:49 PM

Double Gah!  No "Ideal" mark on her neck...

So she's a knock-off, I guess, of the Suzette/Revlon style.  The fakie company must have produced her with an altered mold to remove the original maker's identification.

I'm not much of an expert on these truly vintage dolls- but I think you are right that she could be a knock off, the knock offs of the licensed dolls are actually quite cute...

My mom's favorite childhood doll, we learned a few years ago, is a Saucy Walker knock-off.  It actually bummed her out a bit, which was silly, because it HAD to have been an actual Saucy Walker with the ID stamp sanded off (you can actually see scratch-like marks where the stamp would have been placed).

Fakies have a long history XD

Oh, wait, she may be Nancy Ann..."usually marked"

A knock off Horsman/Cindy doll? How tall is she? This is my 10 inch Horsman doll. She's marked Horsman on the back of her head underneath her hair.

Without shoes: 13 1/2"

I'm guessing she'd be 14" if she had shoes.

Nope

I think she is too!

She doesn't fit anywhere where I have toys on display (my EAH girls have their heads bumping into the shelf above them).

I looked at shoes on eBay, but I'm reluctant to spend $10 on a pair at the moment.  I also can't decided if I want to go with white or teal, open or cloed toed ;)

No idea what she's worth...

Ooh, she's beautiful! If she truly is from the 50s, she's in remarkable condition! Sorry I can't provide any ID advice.

I believe a lot of supermarkets had fashion dolls like this for sale in the 50s & 60s and they often had no markings I think. http://collectdolls.about.com/cs/fiftiesdolls/a/supermarketdoll.htm

I swear I've seen her face before, though.

Perhaps you could take a look through these flickr groups https://www.flickr.com/groups/1372295@N23/ https://www.flickr.com/groups/vintage_hard_plastic_dolls/

Does she look a bit closer to this Deluxe Reading doll (in face not hair etc) except she's too tall? http://www.dollinfo.com/50fash.htm (there's some info here on the similar doll which is called 14R if you scroll down - there were several companies that made these dolls & they look the closest to yours that I could find http://dollreference.com/deluxe_reading_doll.html)

Wish I could be more help. At any rate, she's actually prettier than some of the 'genuine' brand dolls I've seen from the 50s :D

Ooooh, thank you for your help!

She IS a Supermarket Doll made by Reading.  She looks identical to the Deluxe Reading Doll, just a wee bit shorter (14"-ish).  I mean, this one is the 20" and looks just like mine!

Gah! Another one!  Again, with the 24"!

Maybe mine shrank with age?

Oh, I can finally be a use around here!

I know who she is!

She is made by American Character, and she is the smaller version of Sweet Sue Sophisticate.  Sometimes she is also called Toni, but isn't to be confused with hard plastic Ideal Toni made years previous.

Some are marked, some aren't.  Yours would've been sold in a department store, and not in a doll shop or such, as American Character had contracts with department stores, like Sears and Roebucks, to sell their dolls unmarked so the department stores could sell them a bit cheaper or under their own desired names.

She looks to be in super condition, however, a good clean up will do her good and her dress is adorable.  I don't think it's original though, I'd have to consult my books to see for sure, but it looks to be a dress made by a doll accessory called Premiere.

As a little note, I do see she has earrings in, I would pull them, asap, and replace with reproductions.  Vintage doll earrings are usually made with nickle and they can discolor the doll's vinyl terribly and irreversibly.  American Character dolls and Ideal Fashion dolls do not sunfade very well at all.  They will, but you'll lose all her nice skin color.

Also to note:  She came out in the late 50's and early 60's, and I think it sad this line of dolls have sank to the wayside in terms of knowing who they are.  Sweet Sue Sophisticate was the direct competition to Ideal's Miss Revlon, which was pretty much the hottest fashion doll of the time.  xD  Sophisticate was very expensive doll when she came out, and wasn't a grocery store doll.  Horsman and Delux Reading were actually the knock-off brands at that point, despite Horsman having been around since the 1890's.

I believe Sweet Sue Sophisticate sold for between $10-$20 depending on the size.  Ouch!  That was *a lot* of money back then!
