What is ANZAC Day?

Kaoskat, ANZAC stands for Australian New Zealand Army Corps (eek - hope I got that right, I'll be scorned by all if I haven't!). It is a day where New Zealanders and Australians commemorate and remember our soldiers who fought in the two Great Wars, particularly in Gallipoli in 1915, Lest We Forget.

We wanted to attend the dawn service this morning but we were just too tired, watched the planes flying over while we were shovelling a tonne of dirt for the new gardens. Hubby, Dad & me were talking about the war and how awful it would be to be digging trenches. 4 hours of dirt shovelling was my limit!!

BUT I was lucky enough to attend the dawn service at ANZAC Cove back in 2006.. Here are a few pictures, honestly if you kiwis or aussies ever get an oppourtunity to see the cove in Turkey DO IT you will NOT regret it. A very emotional place indeed.

Being in the States now there are no memorial services for Mr. Skeen to attend, so I'm making him ANZAC biscuits from his mother's recipe and then I think he's going to watch a documentary. 

Sea_Breeze - I had never seen ANZAC Cove.  It really gives you a whole new perspective, doesn't it?

Thanks for sharing those pics Sea_Breeze, thats lovely. Was a very cold day here, so we watched the march on Tv, was on every chanel! Many many thousands were brave and gathered in each state to see it all in person.

I always see Anzac day as more of a NZ day than Waitangi day.  Anzac day truly brings us all together.

I buy ANZAC biscuits from my supermarket when I see them (not often!), I have an ANZAC pin badge my grandma brought back from her visit to NZ in the 70s.
Last time we were in London we went to the NZ war memorial in Hyde Park, or on the edge anyway. The Australian one is opposite it.
I'm sure I'm not the only English person here that remembers what your countries did, inc the Maori battalion.
