I'd say Pokemon is really the only thing I collected as a child and continue to collect today, although my collection is mostly made of newer things since there was an unfortunate incident with my collection as a child.

I didn't like MLP as a kid, but that's my main collection now (G1 and G4).

I would honestly LOVE to collect the old Sky Dancers and Polly Pocket sets, because those were some of my favorite toys growing up, but they can be so pricey.

So yeah, my toy collections are mostly newer lines that have come out. Zelfs, Num Noms, various anime merch, etc.

Naht really... I have to make a dedicated but difficult effort to *not* collect additional toy lines besides two: My Little Pony (all gens) and vintage Littlest Pet Shop (both which I collected as a child).

Growing up, I also had legos, barbies, disney character toys, care bears, strawberry shortcake, wuzzles, grand champions, a couple breyers and many other toys and items. I still have the ones from my childhood, but there's just too much out there to try and collect it all.

In high school I discovered flea markets and garage sales and I was buying ALL THE THINGS with 80s characters, like care bears (man they were huge into merchandising!!) I'm talking ALL THE THINGS- like bedding for cribs and baby cloths! I still have so much in storage from this period, but it's when I learned I simply cannot collect all the lines from the 80s- I had to choose...

...and I chose My Little Pony.

Good question.  I mostly collect ponies and SW figures because I grew up with them as a kid. Since then I've collected LOTR figures and Bratz dolls too.  I guess I'm 50/50, but my childhood collections mean the most to me :)

I only wanted MLP and a care bear, but then I got some glow friends too. I had all of those as a kid. But then I got a beautiful fairy tale bird with stand because my sister gave her to me, then I got some lps as companions for my g3s because someone on here suggested it. Pinkie has a croc, RD has a tortoise, Fluttershy a rabbit etc. Like in g4. I didn't have G3 and G4 as a kid but they were so pretty I had to get a crate of each.

No, I can't say that I do, at least not exclusively.  My nostalgia collections (ponies and transformers are my actual childhood toys - I haven't added any new ponies and I've only bought one new transformer, the rest are all 30-something years old).  I do still occasionally buy Star Wars toys, and picked up another Sasha doll last year, so those fall into that category.

As for why I collect toys that aren't childhood ones, I don't see why I wouldn't. I still like toys, I still like new properties, so why not.  I have a set of Mass Effect action figures on my desk right now, and they're there because I think they're eye-catching and because I like the games.  That's enough for me, no nostalgia required, you know?

And I feel like that reason works for people who pick up vintage toys too - if they're visually appealing, why not?

Not really, I'd have to say. It's a mix.

Ponies for sure, but otherwise it's generally stuff that is out currently, or things that catch my eye. None are as extensive as ponies.
-LPS (new, 99% bunnies)
-Schleich
-Funko Pop (99% Harry Potter)
-various random plushies and figurines
-bouncy balls (from vending machines)

This. Funny thing is I wouldn't be surprised if some places online assume I'm older than I am just because I have a fascination with vintage 80s toys all the way up to today but technically I fall smack dab somewhere in the middle.

I have noticed there is like this huge aesthetic difference to pre-80's stuff and everything since. Like you can have a shelf full of 80's, 90's, and current toys and they would all blend together but throw in an early 70's toy and it would stick out like a sore thumb. I wonder if there was some kind of technological breakthrough.

For the most part I only collect toys from the lines I had when I was young. I have made a few exceptions and they are mostly from Goodwill finds.

My exceptions are:
-Fluppy Dogs- found almost all of them on Goodwill trips and one at a antique store. I never had any growing up, but I loved the movie. I found so many that I decided to keep them!

-Wuzzles- found all the main characters on Goodwill trips except for Moosel who I am still missing. I even found one of the cousins(I think they were called that?-anyway the less common charcaters.) I remember watching the show, but never had any of the toys, unless Shrinky Dinks count ;) I also found so many that I decided to keep them.

-Little Pretties- I found a dog at Goodwill and searched and discovered the kitties!

So I'm curious as to what toy lines you collect that you didn't have growing up and how/why did you start collecting them?

Nope. I'm 14 and I collect 80's and 90's toys too.

I started collecting G1 because my mom had G1 and mentioned them before, so I looked them up and became very interested. Later on I found G2 ponies and wanted those too. ( I don't have very many of G2 )

I kinda started collecting Sweetie Kitties and My Very Own Puppies after I saw my friend had one of each. She had no idea what they were called as she had gotten them from a garage sale. I just typed keywords until I found some on eBay..
