Battery-operated guns definitely won't be powerful enough to flock a pony with. They're about on par with the hand-operated ones that rely on static to make the flocking stand up, honestly. Professional flocking systems use very high voltages because they have to, there's really no safer low voltage alternative.

A lot of flocking guns like that ebay one are designed for flocking wargame scenery with grass flocking... which is intended to end up scraggly and not entirely straight. The guns will work for those purposes, but not for a solid, even, soft coat like you'd want for restoring a SoSoft.

Customs / Re: Tail Length Question?
« on: January 03, 2015, 06:12:28 PM »
About 6". I measured my bubbles (plus collector pose ponies) to get a rough idea of G1 MLP 'early' hair lengths, and my measurements were 2" forelocks, 4" manes and 6" tails. Which is luckily pretty easy to remember  ^.^

And I personally prefer the 'original' style  of manes and tails (especially on restorations), but you can always retail longer and then see how you feel about it. It's easier to cut the hair shorter than it is to make up an entirely new tail if you want it longer.

There's a lot more to the process than just 'get applicator, problem solved', unfortunately. You need the right flocking (most 'craft' flocking is far too short and feels prickly rather than soft when used with an applicator), the right glue (too thin, it can't support the flocking upright as it dries; too thick, the flocking can't penetrate deeply enough to get a stable bond and will shed like crazy; too rigid and the glue layer will crack if the pony is flexed, etc), and a lot of difficult, time-consuming work (hand held applicators cannot enable a full-body flock, only patches. Getting the edges between patches to look right is a huge pain in the butt).

And this is ignoring the fact that hand held applicators that are strong enough to flock a pony with a really dangerous (as in, potentially lethal if you shock yourself badly), and it's definitely not something I'd recommend customisers pick up and play with on a whim.

Thanks for all the replies, guys! I fell so hard for Rainbow Dash that I just had to get her a friend, so I'm going to bump this thread for an additional brag :P

Pony Corral / Re: The "Main Characters" of the G1 MLP Cartoon?
« on: November 05, 2014, 06:39:19 PM »
I only voted for three, because honestly none of the other characters really stuck out above each other. I did find it a bit odd that Firefly wasn't one of the pegasus options, though, especially considering 'Rescue at Midnight Castle' was renamed to 'Firefly's Adventure'!

I'm really glad the G1 cartoons didn't have a rigid 'core group' of characters (even though I'm always happy to see my favourites show up, of course).

Fizzy is one of my favourite G1s, but so is Cool Breeze, and since Fizzy looks like a safe 1st place, I lent my vote to Cool Breeze  ^.^

Pony Corral / Re: Blue-striped Fifi variant?

I do think her stripe looks coloured in. I'd definitely rehair her once she arrives home, though, because that blue stripe does look gorgeous (and would look even better without the roots )

Pony Corral / Re: Lemme Upgrade U

I follow goddessofpeep's system. If the pony itself has sentimental value, I don't really see that it can be 'upgraded', but buying a duplicate to fill my collection works fine. With my G3s (which I'm generally less sentimental about as none of them are childhood ponies), I could see replacing any that aren't mint.

Pony Corral / Re: Every time...

That still happens to be with some G3s. I stopped actively collecting around the beginning of 2005. After that point, I picked up a couple of ponies here and there, but because there wasn't any structure to my collecting it didn't really 'sink in' that I'd bought them. In particular I keep forgetting that I have  Sunshower and Luau, because by the time they reached Australia I wasn't actively collecting any more and so I really just picked them up on a whim.

I'm actually putting together a G3 checklist before I start collecting G3s again for exactly this reason XD

Pony Corral / Re: Ponies on display v. "grown-up" decorating
« on: October 29, 2014, 08:35:58 AM »
If displaying your entire collection at once feels a bit overwhelming to you, you might enjoy a smaller display that you rotate regularly. This is how I currently display my collection - I have one shelf, and I display 4--8 ponies at one time. I have a few different backgrounds I use (including a simple white liner for when I want to keep things as minimalistic as possible), and I occasionally include props from different playsets as well.

I think it strikes a nice balance between enjoying something you love without having that thing be a focal point of your home. It functions almost the same way a vase of pretty flowers or colourful knick knacks do in regular decorating, but with an additional meaning for you.

My favourites here are Gypsy and Wigwam. Since Gypsy seems to be very safe, I lent my vote to Wigwam.

Pony Corral / Re: Did you use official MLP names for your toys as a kid?
« on: October 29, 2014, 08:29:53 AM »
I was too young when I got my MLPs to read/learn their names. I actually never really had names of any kind for them, even though I played with them a lot! I think it made a kind of sense to me that animals wouldn't have human-style names for themselves :P I think I might have known Lemon Drop's name (due to getting the Show Stable when I was a bit older).

I do remember when I first started using the Internet that I was super excited to find Dream Valley and I spent ages tracking down the names of every pony in my collection (as well as some ponies I remembered my friends owning).

I just lost an auction for this set, and I'm hoping someone on the Arena can help me soothe the pain by selling me a replacement  This was a playset I had as a child, which is why the Floater version and accessory colours matter so much to me. I am looking for this version of the playset:
  • Base: purple
  • Fences: white
  • Booth+small table+cart+soft-serve machine (back wall)+register (back wall): pink
  • Juke box+ice cream-shaped sign+slide: yellow
  • Floater: moulded tail version (not brushable)
  • Stickers: English
I have photos from the auction that show the playset and accessories more clearly, but I'd rather not post them (as I have no permission from the eBay seller who took them). Please do PM me if you want to see them to confirm you have the set I'm interested in, though!

I am looking to pay between $35 to $50 for a complete set, but this depends on condition. I may be willing to buy an incomplete set at a discount, or to pay more for a set in very good condition. I am not interested in versions with different coloured accessories or non-English stickers. I may consider a set with a brushable Floater, as long as all the accessories and stickers are correct.

I am also VERY interested in buying this set MIB, and would obviously be happy to pay more for that as well. I'm happy to negotiate or to consider offers if you already have a price in mind.

Please PM me if you have this set for sale :lovey:

Pony Corral / Own the Box from a G1 Playset? I Have a Question for You!
« on: October 25, 2014, 03:02:14 AM »
I'm trying to collect measurements of all the G1 playset boxes for a project of mine, so if you own one, could you please share the measurements with me? I'm looking for all three measurements (height, width, depth) of each playset box. I don't need measurements of the playsets themselves, just of their boxes. Thanks  ^.^

Pony Corral / Re: Would you buy TAF variants of any G1 line?
« on: October 20, 2014, 01:39:03 AM »
Out of all the TAF ponies Hasbro ever released (not counting babies), only two were remakes rather than new characters (Sundance and Buttons - and Buttons is arguably a case of a reused name rather than a remake, since her colours and symbol changed so much). I'd buy TAF remakes as long as they kept a similar ratio of remakes to new ponies - none of this "here is a set of six remakes and zero new characters" nonsense that they've latched onto with G3 and G4.

In my opinion, interesting set themes should come first, then the possibility of remaking older ponies in those themes. Modern design seems to be 'what can we change to make them buy a thirtieth version of Pony X?', which is just too baldly capitalist for me.
