Customs / Re: Advice from your younger self

It's way easier than you think! You've built it up into this Huge Scary Thing, and it's not.  It's challenging but fun!  Don't put it off, just go for it!

It's perfectly okay to start over!

If you don't get something "right", try looking at it as an outsider, someone with no expectations.  It may not be what you were aiming for, but it could still be very pretty and very impressive.

High-quality acrylic paints have strong high quality binders that dry glossy, and that glossy finish often remains slightly "grabby" even when dry.  This is why I seal ALL my ponies with Testors Dullcote.  I've never had a problem with it, and it helps even out the shine and bring everything down to a nice smooth satin.  It's available in spray and brush on versions.
I find one can of it will last me for around 4-5 ponies at two coats each.  I keep the brush on version handy for the occasional touch-up that needs to be made after hairing.

Mod Podge does not age well at all, sadly.  It's inexpensive, but it yields poor results.

For reference, Liquitex Basics HAVE gone bad for me, getting all clumpy.  The professional grade never has.  It is very much worth the price jump.  Golden, Grumbacher, Windsor and Newton, are all good, too.

I prefer Liquitex soft body but for some reason Michaels has stopped stocking it, so I use their tube paints and water them down.

Wanted! / DISO STARLIGHT Dollyhair Nylon! ETA: FOUND! Thanks DartBurd! <3
« on: November 21, 2017, 05:30:35 PM »
My heart broke when I saw that Starlight is out of stock at Dollyhair.  I had ALMOST enough to finish this gorgeous galaxy-themed custom I'm doing, but I'm a tiny bit short on hair for her tail!  Does anyone have a MLP hank they'd be willing to part with?  I'm absolutely beside myself over here.

I have Paypal and am in the continental USA.

She's so beautiful!

I'm doing a special surprise custom for a friend.  Her favorite pony was Little Flitter, and her favorite pose is that pose, the Highflier pose.  I reeeeeally want to use that pose.  Highflier, Little Flitter, Cool Breeze, and Flurry are all Highflier pose ponies.  Color doesn't matter much.

I'll be doing a FBR, rehair, and re-winging as well, TOTAL do-over, so rather than picking apart a perfectly good pony, which I just couldn't bring myself to do, I want a pony that really needs a makeover.  Maybe someone can help me out?

I have a Little Flitter in preeeetty good shape I got off eBay, but I can't make myself do anything to her because she's still so pretty.  Maybe someone would like to trade up?

It's a project that is really important to me, so you'd be doing me a huge favor.  I'm in the USA, have Paypal, and am willing to use it!  Let's make a deal!

Oh, thank you Oracle!  I kind of want this on a shirt now:

"Assassins make just dreadful lovers,
They bring you heads under da covers!"

Because I CANNOT stop laughing.  I keep thinking of how my cats bring me "dead things" in bed. (They are just toys, but the cats don't think of it that way.)  And now I'm thinking of Ezio doing the same thing, and I think I have tears in my eyes.  *sniffle*

I sent my question with quivering tears of hope in my eyes.  I can't bear to look.  I think I will just stare at the thong.

Thoooong.  Thong thong thong.

Those are actually ALL the ponies I did this year.  I will try to do more next year!  Hopefully at least one a month!  :D

It is a fantastic idea to have a thread like this, BTW.  It really is great to see what everyone has been up to, and very neat to watch your own progress!

I love you, Arena.  *hugs*

I love how DIFFERENT all of these are from one another, and how gorgeous they are, each one of them.  And oh, Noel is breaking my heart with all that red and white and gold prettiness.  One of my favorite wintery ponies I've seen this year.  <3

Honestly, if I can save myself the aggravation and just buy them from you, I'll be 100% more than happy! XD  I'm happy to let someone else do the work!  *ahem*  I mean, give them a hand and throw money at them.  *lol*  I'm just so curious!  Why, yes, I am a cat person! XD

I just saw the comparison pics and I gotta say, I am impressed!  They are more colorful, and while that makes them technically not accurate, it also makes them really darn pretty, and my girls would be ALL OVER getting to wear something even more shiny than the ones they had originally.

I agree with keeping control of the distribution for the time being.  I am trying to think of a way you could easily identify these as reproductions.  I have a hunch I know more or less how you did it, and would love to see a tutorial, but the potential for people to make new, beautiful wings, and sell them as originals and fleece people that way is an understandable cause for concern.  I think the pony community as a whole is really lovely and ethical and supportive, but there's always gonna be someone out for a quick buck willing to take credit for something that isn't theirs (happened to three of my friends in the last three months; THREE -- not anything to do with ponies, though).  Hmm.  It does bear thinking about.

All that said, I am really enthusiastic about this project, and wanna thank RedKitsune for sharing with us.  I will definitely be putting some money aside to get a pair or two, and will be happy to report back here and do a mini-review for others who are thinking of getting them.

WOOO HOOO!  I hope I don't miss out on it when you're ready due to extreme forgetfulness.  Will you be posting in the customs sale forum for these?  I will also just stalk this thread, I think.  I'd love to "test drive" a few pair on my ladies, and look forward to it as soon as they're ready and I gots the money in PayPal.
