Shells, who else has a thing for them? Shell art?
« on: July 25, 2012, 08:25:28 AM »
I LOVE shells. Seriously, it is an obsession. I have two large Really Useful Boxes full, plus odds 'n sods floating around everywhere! Large ones are all out on display.

I love adding shells to random items too. I've done a table which I gave to my Mum (I will grab a pic next time I go see her, my pic has gone AWOL) I've done loads of pots and boxes (my ex's mum stole all but one of them when I moved out  ) and I've just done a mirror...

It's SO therapeutic and in my new house I have the space to do it again :cheer:

Anyone else like shells, or into their shell art?

I like finding them on the beach, but I don't buy them. I'm not into killing things for decorative purposes, so I'd rather collect my own. :hamster:

I collect most of my own when I'm at the beach, the rest I either pull apart pictures etc for, or get a couple of pieces at a time from bootsales, charity shops etc.

I would never bought shells new, mine have all been second hand or found.

I don't mind buying shells so much.  I refuse to buy those poor dessicated starfish and seahorses.  >:  I like sea horses too much to see them look like tiny jerky.

Very creative mirror! I used to collect shells off of the beach when I was little with my cousin. We would buy glue and google eyes and make them into frogs. I still have them and they are very cute. I never buy shells at stores though, except for when I used to have hermit crabs.

I'm not too much into shells, for reasons Kat mentioned.  Found ones are cool, though!  I've made necklaces from found shells in the past.

Thank you everyone :)

It's REALLY important for me to only use antique or found shells, or shells that have had the creatures used as food. There is no way I want to contribute to any sort of wasteful killing that goes on in some countries.

Your mirror really is one of the nicest shell art frames I have seen!

I'm not really into shell art, but I do love shells.  I have a bunch that I have collected including a few from special trips where I was super lucky to find a whole uninhabited tiny conch shell!  Those are on my dresser as a reminder of a wonderful vacation.

Love that mirror! You incorporated all the different kinds of shells so well :D

I collect shells. The last time I went to the beach the tide was out and I found some really awesome ones.

My mom used to make shell art... I have loads of stuff; mirrors, boxes, lamps, even furniture! They sell shell lamps with a hefty price tag here for tourists, but the ones I have were made by hand by either my mom or grandma. You'd go nuts in Florida :P Sanibel island is a shellers paradise.
