What happened to the G1 Prototype Head Mold?
« on: March 26, 2015, 05:20:37 AM »
I know we're not meant to ask who bought what, but I've been curious as to what the community thought of the G1 Prototype Head Mold Earth Pony that sold on ebay back in January.

It had been offered on the forums previously but I don't recall seeing much discussion about its legitimacy, not to mention the auction had only two bidders... for what could have been a very rare piece of MLP history this just strikes me as odd. Plus, the unicorn head didn't appear to sell at all?

Did I miss something, has she been discussed or bragged about at length and I didn't see the post? I figured she would have been bought by a devoted collector and member but I haven't heard a peep.

I apologise if this post is against Arena rules, I'm just super curious and wish I could have afforded her. If the buyer is a member and wants to remain anonymous that's perfectly fine too. ^.^

Cheers,

Heh. If you are thinking what I am thinking about, I was just asking the seller about it. On her flickr it still seemed for sale. Didn't realize it went to eBay.

I was also curious of thoughts about it--- since I missed the conversation about it. (Was there any conversation?)

Looks like the earth pony mold sold-

I am very curious as to it's history and authenticity as well- it seems pretty neat!  I wonder if you could still use the molds to cast ponies with ?

...and the rumor was that they were all destroyed (or, at least that's what Hasbro told everyone).

I wonder if it's the head that belongs with Kirk Hindman's body mold...

That does look like the mold he was talking to us about when I was working with him last month at ponycon! He said the body part (shown) was still in existence but the head had gone missing. Hmmm I'll have to send him an email..

I really think from these photos- that the heads that this collector has, are the real deal.  Honestly I am surprised that auction went as low as it did- although I guess a head mold is of limited use without the body mold.

I too am in favor of MAKING MORE PONIES!!!!

I agree Galactica, I think that is indeed the real deal.  He will be very surprised to learn that it was found!

I've collected Kenner and Mattel prototypes over the years- and it seems like many things like these get rescued from the trash (in the case of Kenner), or taken home by employees, or sometimes the sample-makers "keep" things...   Usually this happens after the line is discontinued- and the company requests the items be destroyed or recycled.

Thank goodness for a few naughty employees and sample makers, is all I can say...

This is true.  Kirk said he was one of the people who rescued things from the trash himself, many of those things pictured included :)

Later he gave some things back to hasbro for them to keep as a part of their history, which is one of the reasons why he is able to borrow things from them for fairs.
