Scandinavian NSS ponies - differences?
« on: February 18, 2014, 10:57:11 AM »
Hey all, I was wondering if someone could help me understand how to recognize a Scandinavian NSS pony from a deflock? I tried to search the forums but only came up with a thread about Scandinavian Gusty, but I'm talking more about ponies that were SS in the US but we released there as NSS versions? Are there pose variations or anything like that? What are they marked on the hooves?

Thank you!

As far as I know most of the NSS ponies have grayish 'eyeliners' and de-flocks (SS) have black 'eyeliners' (for example Truly and Cupcake). At least Magic Star is in a different pose (NSS is in the Tootsie pose). And there are two NSS Gustys. The UK one with non-glittery symbol and green eyes, and the Scandinavian one which has glittery symbol and green eyes.
*eta* NSS Wind Whistler has pink/blue symbols, SS just pink.

Are the Scandinavian ones marked differently on their feet for the same pose ones? I'm thinking like Scandinavian exclusive NSS, not really the UK NSS ponies - so, I think... Cupcake? Truly? Are there others?

So is there a way to know if you're buying a true Scandinavian or an unmarked deflock? Is it just the eyeliner?

There are some other very subtle difference in the colour of the symbol as well, but the biggest clue is the eyeliner.

It's important to check the province of the pony as well as everything else.

Thanks!

I suppose all I can do is try and judge from photos when trying to buy online...

I guess I feel like a negative nelly thinking people would pass deflocks off as rare ponies - lol

So the Scandinavian ponies have black eyeliner, but what's the difference from the deflocks? A deflocked cupcake would therefore be identical to the Scandinavian version... now I'm confused. I can pick a scandi Gusty, but that's about the limit of my expertise!

Being in Australia, both versions were released here, I think? Aargh!

I'm sure Scandi Gusty has black eyeliner? I'm looking at this thread: http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,349318.0.html
and gusty looks to have black eyeliner - or is it just a really dark grey? I'm assuming if that's the case, you would need a side by side comparison of the other Scandi's to be sure, so would need to get the SS/deflock for comparison purposes? I don't have my SS's out right now to look at their eyeliner, lol!

Sunshine, if you are considering an auction that I think might have prompted this thread (?) I have just finished deflocking a SS cupcake. Here is a pic of her head with a good look at her eyeliner if that helps to compare in any way  :)

Also, de-flocks oft have their tails punched in off-target, so once all the fluff is off, you often see the little indent where the tail was supposed to go  ;)  The Scandanavian most likely shouldn't have that and will have their tail in (usually) the right place like any other non-flocked pony.

Also the 'cup' part of the symbols on my deflocked cupcake seem more orange than the auction one, whose seem more yellow?

In addition to the brown eyeliner, both Truly & Cupcake have different shades of their eye color, as well. It's hard to spot if you're only looking at one pony, but comparing a real NSS & a deflock side by side the difference is very noticeable.

I agree the eyeliner is the major teller. The deflocked version has a very solid black eyeliner [so that it was visible through the flocking] and the non so soft has a softer brown eye liner. I had a comparison picture of Cupcakes on my other computer which I ll try to find and post.  It is really apparent when you see them side by side.

The tail hole punch is also a common thing with deflocks; most so softs have these and of course a non so soft will not.

And finally, even the very very best deflocker will struggle to remove every single bit of flocking. And by that I mean in the holes in the rear hooves, around and in the neckline, at the main hair line, in the nostrils and in the deepest part of the ear. I have yet to come across a deflock which does not have some kind of evidence somewhere on the body of the flocking which was removed.

Also de flocking can change the texture and look of a ponies plastic :)
