I know this is a stupid question but...
« on: June 02, 2017, 10:12:42 PM »
I know I'm a moron. And I've seen people say things like "rub to non display side" and stuff when discussing flaws with ponies. I just have one question. What side of the pony is the display side and what is the non display side? And how does one tell?

Generally tends to be where the head or face is facing. If the head is straight it can be indicated with a change to one side like Mimics raised hoof. More ambiguous would be CC/FF or rearing pose.  For me, the side the mane falls helps me determine how the NDS.

However, it could generally be the side not shown in a picture lol.

its usually the side that you face towards you when displaying on your shelf or whatever. usually the direction the ponys head is facing. on some ponies it is really obvious, on some its more switchy.

With G3s and G4s, the display side is the side with the cutie mark on. It's called that because it's the side you would usually display them on your shelf.

Some ponies don't really have a display side, and after 10+ years, I still have trouble describing those properly, haha, so I don't think it is a 'stupid question' to have!

It's not a stupid question. I think I asked it a long time ago as well. For G3s and G4s it's whatever side the symbol/cutie mark is on since they only have a symbol on one side.

Someone told me that on G1s one way to tell the display side is the way the mane falls. The side that the mane curls/curves on is the display side.

You know, I'd always wondered how to tell which was the display side on G1 ponies who had ambiguous poses (eg. Collector Pose), I never thought about which way the mane falls! You learn something new every day. Now I'll know which way to face my Posey army when I get them out of storage lol. ^.^

Its not a stupid question. I used to not know.

For the first gen its where the mane is, though sometimes it depends on the condition of the individual, for example; You have a rainbow pony with lots of missing glitter on its display side, but the non display side has very little glitter loss so you show her off on that side. On G3s/G4s its wherever the symbol is. Dunno about G2s.

Often times the shy pose the hair falls to the NDS, but with those the DS is obviously how it looks at you.

I've never heard of it being related to the way the hair falls.  I personally like the hair to fall behind the side I'm looking at.  Seems to me the hair isn't always going the same way on the same pony either.

There are no stupid questions, but there ARE stupid answers.  You can tell which by looking for mine!

Speaking of Collector's Pose, I just recently found out that not all symbols are the same on both sides of all ponies.  For example, some of the original 6 that have lots of the same mark on each side have a different number on one side vs the other.  I'd never notice that if it hadn't been pointed out to me.

Lastly, the correct side to display is the side you want to look at.  It could be argued that if you are going to display them for a long long time, you should switch sides once in a while so they fade evenly...at least, I've heard that argued and I suppose it would depend on how much daylight gets in and how reflective the surroundings behind the pony are.

There are a couple G3s where it's kind of hard to say which side is the DS and which is the NDS. Dance Slippers is a good example. Her head faces one side and her symbol is on the other side.

There are a couple other oddball G3s like that, but I can't think of who they are.

Honestly, I think it's subjective! :P It varies so much between pose and head position, I'd say ask for clarification if you aren't sure! ;)

Except with some of the UK ponies, like Tutti Frutti, where that would mean them having their back to you...the UK Tutti Frutti is rooted with the intent of her hair falling on her NDS. And the European one the opposite. Just to really cause a mess.
