Is this baby a variant Star Ember?
« on: April 18, 2014, 10:43:24 PM »
I received this little girl from the wonderful Cassstorm and upon receiving her I immediately took out my Star Ember and made some comparison shots.
I've looked really closely at both of them, measured their stars' dimensions, and general shape (they aren't perfect stars on SE, there are a few distinct angle differences that I think would be difficult to reproduce by hand. The third shot REALLY shows how similar they are.
Her eyes are also a different color than my other pink Embers...it's different from ALL of them. While the normal have dark blue-purple, hers are more of a lavender color.
What do you think?

Omg! If she turns out to be a proper variant (and I'll leave that diagnosis to more experienced heads than mine), that's so cool! Ember with her star is one of my favorite G1s.

The similarity of the shape and placement of the star is incredible!
How exciting is this!

I've not even washed her yet for fear of further losing those beautiful stars! Her tail is loose, but her head isn't, so I'm a little hesitant to remove it and check how clean she is inside. Should i remove it, or just leave her as is, give her a nice shampoo and condition, and let her be?

I would be curious to know who previously owned this pony before Cassstorm (or if it's just a random ebay lot pony).
There are some amazing things that customizers can do that look nearly factory. I don't think we've heard of any prototype variants of her. As for eye color there can be batch variation. (Geesh I sound like a kill joy right now.)

Is it all just blue glitter or is there some silver mixed in? Earlier year ponies had a mix of colors for glitter symbols. Hasrro sometimes would paint under glitter symbols as well.

Let's see what the experts say...

I'm sorry but she still just seems to be a pink ember with a really good painted on star. As mlp4me mentions, you wouldn't believe the talent some customizers have. Her eye color looks identical to my pink ember. The glitter star seems a tad smaller which would happen if someone traced from the actually star and then reapplied onto pink ember.

Well i checked both strawberry reef's place and my lil wiki.. there is a pink ember running around out there but nothing mentions that she had a star.
I think she might be some kind of customization. But id keep looking she could be something that either of those places doesnt know about.
she is so pretty tho!
either way good find!

I don't put much stock on eye color variation, either. I've two baby fireflies with slightly different eye colors and i just chalk that up to batch differences.
Anyway, her hair is also more grey/purple, but i think that might be aging as well, so i'm only going to stick to star analysis and comparison.

Glitter - compared to Baby firefly, short-haired 1983 Firefly, Moonstone, 2 early release terrible hair Majesty's - The blue does contain silver in it, though not as much as one Majesty. The other Majesty has a similar silver/blue ratio, but the blues are different. Baby Firefly has far too much silver, Moonstone has a similar blue/silver ration, but the grain size of sparkle is too dissimilar. Adult Firefly is almost exactly the same as Sparkle Star Ember in grain size and silver/blue ratio, but my Firefly appears to have been painted under her symbols. In fading, SSE is most similar to Moonstone, in that when the blue goes, only the "ghost" of the shape is left. It's also similar to Glory or Moon Dancer's sparkle loss in that same fashion.

I need to get a very accurate ruler today and take measurements of the stars to compare them. This little girl is turning into a lot of work! If you can think of any other 1983-84 ponies with blue sparkles, please let me know. I may have them to make a better, more accurate comparison.

I almost bought that pony from someone a few years ago. If I remember right, we all had a conversation about it then. I believe it's just a normal Ember that someone painted a star on. Just my opinion though.

I would say a very well painted custom star but definitely looking forward to hearing about the measurements of the star. If it's very uniform then it could have been factory-done? Let us know once you've done some measuring

It looks to me like somebody glitter-glued a blue star on pink Ember's hindquarters.

I agree with the consensus on a custom. However I do also agree that it looks incredibly well done and also as though it has been done some time ago, hence the glitter loss. Yes the placement is accurate but the star does look smaller and getting a star placed right on a rump is not as challenging as a more complicated symbol of course. She is cute this way though :)
