Can this pony be saved? With pics!
« on: February 14, 2013, 06:52:48 PM »

Hello!  I recently bought some inexpensive, rather beaten up ponies on eBay, mainly out of pity.  I wanted to give them baths and a chance at a decent life! :)  Of the four, three bounced back pretty well (see pics of two below), but poor Butterscotch has some serious issues.

As you can see here, she looks mainly just dirty on her DS:

But on her NDS you see that she has some mold and/or serious plastic breakdown issues:

Slightly closer view:

I don't see these spots going away, and I'm not quite sure what to do with Butterscotch.  I didn't buy these ponies to keep, but I don't see anyone wanting Butterscotch in this shape.  Any ideas?

I do have to brag a bit about my skills with a Mr. Clean Eraser, a soapy toothbrush, and a comb:

FF Candy was a mess!

Now she is much better!

And this lot included perhaps the most pristine Peachy I've ever seen!!!  I'm still working to get some faint, possibly pencil, initials off the bottoms of her hooves, but otherwise, wow is she minty!

If anyone wants Cotton Candy, Peachy, or POOR BUTTERSCOTCH, please PM me.  Definitely don't want to throw Butterscotch in the trash--she's at least a hair donor :(
Looking for CF Minty, excellent condition! (and maybe Snuzzle and Blue Belle)

You'd throw out a pony because of a few cancer spots on her nds? Seriously, just clean her up...

I'd say just clean her up as best you can. Unfortuantely sometimes they just don't come up perfect, and If you sell the others, just list her as bait for $2 or something. I know some collectors (well me for one) Have ponies they use as placeholders until they can upgrade, and then customise them or re-sell when they have a minty one. I think she's a perfect candidate for this, and I'd definitely put her up for sale once she's cleaned as best as you can do. Good luck with cleaning her up and finding her a new home!!

I'd say clean her up as well, there's got to be someone out there who would want her.

I should add that Butterscotch is in no actual danger of being thrown out :)  I know lots of collectors are concerned about ponies that may have mold, so the main issue was that I don't want to just stick her in a lot for someone else to discover.  Happy to take suggestions for specific ways I should try to clean her, or if anyone wants to take her off my hands just for shipping, PM me.  Definitely want her to go to a good home!

I agree with the above.  Clean her up the best you can (Magic eraser, hot water) and if you can't get the spots off, sell her for $2-$3.  Someone is bound to want her.

Peachy and CC look lovely, btw.  :)

Dang, I was just about to myself. :P Oh well, it's getting her a good home that counts.

I've got a Butterscotch with cancer too. But hey, she's a real sweetie. With some cleaning she'll display well. Or, you could always let her wear some ponywear that will cover the spots!

The great thing about G1s having a symbol on both sides is that if one side has issues, you can often just face them the other way on the shelf. ;D Or some people might not even mind that she has issues. Random spots like that are something that gives a pony a little character. =)

I can't wait to see what you can do with Butterscotch. I have a few ponies like her in my herd. Don't worry....I'm sure you can find her a home. There are lots of us out there who actually enjoy letting ponies like that come rest in our herds. lol

I have an army of Butterscotch's with plastic breakdown. I still need to try one in peroxide since it got rid of the brown on a white pony. She seems very prone to it.

I just have to ask this, maybe a stupid question but I´ve read somewhere that pony cancer and pindot is contagious. So now I don´t want my "spotted" ponies anywhere near my minty ones, am I overreacting?
And also, anyone who knows what magic erasers is called in Sweden and where to get them??? And what is peroxide?

Both CC and Peachy looks stunning, great job cleaning them up!!

I also worry about cancer spreading. I think I remember hearing about peroxide and boiling or something like that to kill the mold?

Pindot is NOT contagious. It is also NOT mold, its dirt. I wouldn't worry about cancer spreading, its more about the breakdown of the plastic. However, if the ponies are stored in the same conditions and one gets it, the others might get it too. Then people think it spread from pony to pony rather than each pony just being afflicted individually.
