Rehairing issue - large holes and splits (Pics added)
« on: February 16, 2013, 06:02:58 PM »
I've got a B&W Frankie I'm going to customize. She's bald, now, but when I pulled her hair out I found out they did her holes on top of each other in some places. So I've got spots where there's 3-4 or more holes all together, and nothing between them.

When rehairing a doll like this, do you just use more hair in that spot, or is there some other way to fix this? It's not enough to need scalp surgery, but it's way too large for a normal plug.

I'm facing this with a custom I'm working on a s well! It seems like she has three holes all right together right at the hairline. Dehairing didn't help the situation; I think it might've ripped the area even more. Of course there was a huge puddle of glue in the problem area, too! :P

Are you using the knot or glue method to rehair? If you use the glue method, it might give you the structural integrity you need in the end. I'm a total custom newbie, though, so I'm sure there are others out there with better advice!

Rehairing issue - large holes and splits

I have a few hairless dolls that I will some day reroot and they have this issue also. I plan on attempting the same method I use with ponies. Just put extra plugs in the hole till it's mainly filled and make sure it gets plenty of glue. I normally use the reroot tool, but I might try the knot method eventually since dolls get their hair played with and styled much more than ponies.

I'm looking forward to the official answers from the pros :)

I've had this happen with both MH and ponies... no bueno.  :nope:

Since I use the re-hairing tool and glue method, I usually just make the plug bigger to fill in the hole. I've never had any hair fall out, and once the hair is glued in and the hair gets styled, you can't even tell that its one giant plug.  :)

I'm not 100% sure what the method I'll be using is called - it's like the knot method, though.

No. You can't have my Snickers, either! :P

i just have that problem along the hair line by the ears. holes too close to each that they're ripped. so now i have to fill it with enough hair and make sure i spread it out before i glue it in place.

The first one you can just add a little more hair in the plugs or whatever. The second you can sew together to bring the edges closer. Keylimepony's lala had a similar issue and thsts all i did. In most cases just putting in more plugs/hair is fine

Oh man. Thank you, Ravie! Every doll head I've seen dehaired has some like the first one, but the second is THE WORST - and of course she's the B&W Frankie I had intended to simply rehair and keep. Damn glue seepage. Of course, now we're using the tea-tree oil method, but still.

Thank you soooo much.

I just saw this tutorial on Tumblr, and I remembered this thread. This might be too late, but maybe it will be useful to someone out there :)
