Moondancer restoration project - advice needed!
« on: August 04, 2012, 10:24:06 AM »
I don't know if anyone remembers my weird Moondancer covered in paint. Anyway, here she is, as she was when I got her:

I have just finished removing the paint with nail polish remover. Ta-da!

However, as you can see some of the paint on her eyes has come off, and a lot of the glitter on her cutie marks has too:

Does anyone have any advice on the right type of paint to use to touch up the eyes? I assume it will be acrylic. I think I'll have to look for some fine glitter for the stars and moon, any advice? Particularly supplies I can buy in the UK.

She's going to have to pop off to the window now anyway, as she's nowhere near as white as she looks in the photos. Not that there is any sun here to fade her with!

I highly recommend the paint from dollyhair.com as they are really nice to work with. She is based in the USA, but it is not overly expensive imo.

I use nail glitter for glittery symbols as it is very fine, easy to get and comes in lots of colours.

I got some hair from dollyhair recently which arrived fairly quickly actually, so I'll give it some thought.

Ahh, that is a really good idea! I'll look out for some. Thanks!

eyes, I just use regular acrylic. folk art, citadel, A/A.  As for the glitter symbols, that's Folk Art Extreme Glitter, Silver for the Moon and Rose for the Stars. Hope it helps.

I use regular acrylics too, Folk Art and Americana are my favourites and you can pick them up in Hobbycraft for fairly cheap

I vote for thinned artist quality acrylics for restorations because they go on much smoother and will look more factory to be honest.  Use the smallest brush you can find and then have another pony for reference when doing the eyes.  Nail glitter or airbrush glitter for the symbols.  The super fine glitter that's been sold in the craft stores for the past couple of years still isn't as fine as G1 Hasbro glitter, but airbrush glitter is.   I'm assuming the original glitter was probably an airbrush type glitter as that is what would've been used on a factory production line.

Just a note- I used Folk Art Extreme Glitter to do the symbols on this guy:
