G1 Twilight in watercolours
« on: December 26, 2024, 08:49:43 PM »
I got some new watercolour paints for Christmas, and wanted to try them out. Using them, some white acrylic and some ink pens, I painted a portrait of G1 Twilight.

Thanks all! I had a lot of fun making her!
Not sure which pony to paint next though…I’m trying out new styles with the hair, so I’d love to continue with more ponies

Thanks all! I really have to give some credit to the art education course I took last semester. Through it I learnt I do enjoy watercolour as a medium!
I also took BlackCurtains advice, and painted Raincurl!

I had a bit of extra time these past few days as well, and wanted to try a focus on backgrounds this time around.

At this rate I might have to rename the thread to Mews art or something. Do let me know which pony I should paint next! I'm starting a new semester, but I'd love to keep painting when I have a moment.
For some reason my scanner also seems to enjoy washing out the colours. I’m not sure why this is. I might have to use a bit of photoshop to bring the saturation back to what it should be. But if anybody here has any ideas on how to make better scans, I’m all ears!

Ooh I like the one with Celestia, the tall and narrow format is brilliant! The wintery background is beautiful. I really should give some effort to trying out more unusual formats like that this year, it could be fun. And challenging, too!

Raincurl looks very sweet with her bows ^.^

Edit to add / I have always found it extremely difficult to scan watercolour pieces, like you said they usually end up looking washed out and I've never mastered the skills to adjust the settings. I've had much better results with photos taken in natural light, especially now that most phones have cameras that are more than adequate for the purpose. It would be a different story if I was attempting to achieve print-quality reproductions, but I'm not professional artist, I only need photos that are true enough to showcase my work on the internet. In fact, it's better if the quality isn't too high... but I still want the colours to be somewhat accurate!

The hatch shading is very cool! And others are right that the super tall perspective on the Celestia piece makes for a really interesting composition!
