Don't remind me of that.

"Edgier" isn't so bad when done well.  Executing the concept with some more depth and better stakes can breathe new life into it.  What they did to Rainbow Brite was just idiotic (and hard on the eyes).

No.

I want G1 left alone-- besides random merchandise. I don't think a remake of the movie/cartoon would go over well. Everyone would pick it apart and complain because it wouldn't be done in a way they personally want.

Yeah, there's that too.  I think we'd see a bunch of threads about how Wind Whistler or Buttons or whoever is RUINED FOREVER because they were changed in a reboot.  But you can't expect characters to stay exactly the same in personality, sound of voice, or appearance when something reboots.  Just look at all the versions of Starscream.  He looks completely different from G1 to Transformers Armada to Transformers Prime.  And the Armada version isn't even a backstabber, which is usually the main trait people associate with him.

In a lot of ways I do consider G4 to be a defacto reboot of G1.  All of the ponies were originally based on G1 ponies, even if Applejack was the only one who squeaked through design-wise.  Spike is there.  It's a fantasy world full of dragons, etc. A lot of the locations were based off G1 playsets;  Cloudsdale was inspired by the G1 Waterfall, for example.  And Megan is absent, which makes it the perfect reboot for me, lol.

That Starlite's chin reminds me of Gaston.  I will say, though, that I think the designs there are much better than the previous reboot.  The one where Rainbow Brite looked uncomfortably like a Barbie doll and the horses had weeeeird proportions.

I wish Hasbro would license G1 MLP to Funko. The Action Vinyls Loyal Subjects has on the way are great but I'd also like to see something similar to the G4 vinyls with art accurate proportions.

As for Rainbow Brite I actually really liked what I saw of the newest reboot but was disappointed in the total lack of merch. Especially since I felt they did a really good job of giving the brand modern sensibilities to appeal to kids today but without making it unrecognizable. What I would have given for cute little dolls of all of them.

I am starting to get to this point as well.  I like the retro toys like the tiny Firefly and Glory but I don't think I would ever be satisfied with what Hasbro WOULD produce.

You two worded it much better than I did :P this is what I'm thinking, too. The odd retro merch here and there is nice but I think it'd be best to just leave it there, honestly.

What I'd really like right now is the first two specials released in their original uncut versions.  I wish they would at least put forward that much effort.  I can watch RAMC on vhs and that's great for a real nostalgia kick but I worry that one day it will get damaged.

Honestly, at this point I'm wondering if they even have copies of the uncut specials any more. I mean, it's been years, they've been released on DVD a few times now and there's obviously interest in them (every time they get released on DVD I see people going "is they the uncut versions?"), you'd think if they DID have them they would have released them by now :( But that's just speculation on my part, I guess.

I think I'd personally only like something if they stuck with the 80s super colorful rainbow packed stuff where everything is just pretty and 'girly,' I feel like things now are like... edgier?? Toned down on the super girly cuteness, quirky looking characters that aren't perfect looking.

Kind of like how they redid Starlite as a wonky kinda horse. So weird. lol.

I'd take those horses over that...John K-esque abomination...

Re: the 'RUINED FOREVER' thing, not really a problem for me. Even if a new iteration of old Gen thing does not end up to my liking its still better than Hasbro acting like the previous generations never even existed. At least it's SOMETHING...(Case in point: The Loyal Subjects vinyls. Not really a fan but I still think it's good they're making them) And like Transformers, it's not like Hasbro ever forgot about the old G1 versions of Optimus, Bumblebee etc., when they made new ones. Even today toys and merchandise of G1 versions of Transformers characters are still being made and Hasbro still makes the effort to release new/updated toys of lesser known G1 characters..

Edit: Referring to that spoilered image on page 1 of this topic.

D: Starlite went from looking beautiful and majestic to an ugly nag with that humped nose. Rainbow Brite looks cute at least but poor Starlite. x.x

They could do what BBC has done with destroyed episodes of Doctor Who, ask fans and television stations for their copies of the specials.  There are some high quality copies floating around out there.

Hasbro wouldn't have had the specials to destroy "back in the day".  The people who bought the rights to Sunbow's work would have had them.  I can't remember if Sunbow had anything to do with producing the specials or not, but I do know that the specials were included in "MLP & Friends", which is where the versions with the songs cut out come from.  A couple years ago, Hasbro finally bought the rights to the Sunbow library off the previous holder.

Hmm . . . If RaMC and EfC weren't by Sunbow, then maybe Hasbro only has the rights to the incomplete MLP & Friends versions?

I dunno.

Personally my guess is that Hasbro doesn't actually know that there's a song missing in the MLP & Friends version.  Someone should ask the reps at the next MLP Fair.

Reboots? Nah. They'd probably mess it up somehow and I would be disappointed or dissatisfied. The current generation is enoigh of a reboot to keep me happy that MLP is alive and well! I would love to see some original animation that hadn't been released before. Even though those cartoons always had extra legs and stuff like that I thought it was funny even when they were new.

Sunbow and Marvel did all of the MLP media in the 80's.

I believe Hasbro would mess up when it comes to remaking something G1. Then you'd have G1 fans groaning because they goofed on something, then you'd have G4 followers groaning because it's not G4.

I see some here saying G4 is somewhat of a reboot of G1, which I do think at least the first 2 seasons were.. after that I started cringing. I really don't care for the G4 characters any more and the fact I haven't watched the show since season.. uh... well I have seen a few episodes here and there between S3 and S5 but I really stopped mid-S4 and only watched the ending episodes.

I think though, some companies doing license figures is enough though :D

Hmmm, that's a good point, about it possibly being a rights issue. It certainly wouldn't be the first time that's happened with an 80s/90s cartoon.. it'd be great if someone could ask about it! They prolly wouldn't know anything about it (I wouldn't at all be surprised if it did turn out that they have no idea there's multiple versions of the specials, lol), but it'd be worth a go.

(Could it be possible that Sunbow, or someone else other than Hasbro, destroyed/lost the uncut versions at some point before Hasbro got the rights to the series?)

Speaking of the edited versions of the cartoons, I'd love to know what happened to the uncut ver of "The Glass Princess", or why it was even censored in the first place..

I think Hasbro must have lost or destroyed the uncut versions of the specials at some point.

Oh, certainly they could do that, but do you really think they would? :P This IS Hasbro we're talking about, after all.
