What to do with old pony VHS...

So I have a space crisis, and one of my projects from now till the end of next year is to try and resolve it, making sure the things I keep are the things that matter to me.

I have a lot of VHS tapes from the UK release (so PAL) that were picked up from carboot sales over several years in the late 1990s. I have My Little Pony ones...I know I also have some JEM and SheRa ones. Obviously I want to keep the two MLP VHS I had as a small child, just because they are nostalgic to me, and I'm pretty sure my sister isn't parting with any of hers, but the others are really taking up space.

I wondered whether other people keep these or get rid of them? What suggestions there are for them? I could simply send them to be junked or recycled but I dislike doing that with pony things, particularly because I have a passion for pony backcards and a lot of people see those as junk.

What has anyone else done with their pony VHS?

I sold mine on eBay. I didn't get a lot for them, but it got them out of my hair!

Ebay is such a pain though, these days, and with my living between two locations, if I get a slow bidder paying, it creates potential problems. I need to go through them properly, I suppose, and I guess that won't happen now till Christmas. I think it would be a shame to recycle them, but I don't want to put them on ebay and have it cost me more than the bid price to pay the fees now they charge fees on shipping cost as well.

you could donate them. perhaps you could take scans of all the cover art/back art and keep a digital shelf, and donate the rest. im sure theres kids out there who would watch them. or, other collectors. i keep a look out for pony vhs' when i go thrifting.

Keep the boxes, donate the tapes. Store the cardboard boxes flat in a binder?

Don't throw them away! I always keep an eye out for MLP tapes when I go in charity shops, someone'll be interested! I'd probably donate them, or offer them for shipping cost only like Barnacle_lady suggested.

(but yesss - take photos or scans of the boxes first - some of them are missing from MLWiki and it's always nice to see G1 stuff )

Most of the boxes are plastic so ditching the box and keeping the tape would be impractical. It might be possible to get the inlay out from the tape box on those, but I haven't got them out yet to try. Charity shops here don't accept VHS any more, so that's out as an option. Carboot sale has also failed with the SheRa ones, though I haven't gone through the pony ones yet.

I guess when I get around to going through the drawer as part of my sortout, I'll know what I have. I should probably scan or photograph them for the Scrapbook as UK pony stuff anyway, but after that I guess I'll look at my options.

Oh clam shells? Take the paper out of the clam shell. Most VHS tapes here were cardboard. What I'm saying is keep the artwork (in a binder) since you aren't holding on to them to watch them but because you like the art.

Just offer the tapes for free. (+ Shipping costs on eBay, if you do it that way), or free at a car boot, or free on Craigslist or similar (I think maybe you don't have Craigslist?)

Sometimes you can take the artwork out of the clamshell case. Just pull it out very carefully. I recently bought a replacement MLP VHS so I could have the same copy my grandparents had. I'm sure there are still people interested in them.

I had a quick look at them this afternoon and a couple of them do have card sleeves, but the rest are plastic cases. I might well do that with the artwork, but then it might be harder to find new homes for them if I keep that and don't sell it with the tape. I guess it's something I will be thinking about carefully when it comes to Christmas break...

I don't think we have Craigslist but I think we have other similar entities. I really don't trust them though.

I was just looking at all my tapes with the same issue as well. I was thinking of transfering them to digital and then offering them up on Craigslist or Let Go. I love the tapes but they take up so much space.

I hate to just get rid of them though b/c i know i am still on the hunt for some videos (like Sweet Sea if anyone has a digital copy ;p).

Why couldn't VHS tapes be smaller?
