Cleaning ponies?
« on: November 02, 2016, 01:49:46 PM »
Howdy everyone. Just bought a small army of assorted G3's at a thrift store, and would like to make sure I'm cleaning/touching them up properly.
Soap/water for general grime is easy enough, but what about hair care? How long should you soak them in a conditioner bath? Taking care not to get water inside the toy.
And any recommendations on a comb/brush to use? Been working with a plastic comb I've had for a while.

See those white markings on the back of Wysteria? They won't wash off, or lightly scraped off. Since they're nowhere near her cutie mark or eyes, I'm gonna try acetone later, but if anyone has other suggestions, I'll consider them.

Also I have a G1 Cotton Candy with a missing tail, anyone mind linking me to a re-tailing guide?

Thank you
Thanks to Lunacat for the lovely art

For the tail, try this one, or look in youtube.

For the hair my method is fabric softener, and it works wonders on G1 ponies.

First batch cleaned up and styled. I'm rather proud of Scooter Sprite, I think she came out great. Even more so since I bought her scooter and helmet as well.

I use Dawn for bodies and regular conditioner with no dyes for hair. When washing ponies I get a washcloth all wet and soapy, rinse them off for a moment, soap up (scrub if necessary), and rinse off. No soaking. I glob on a TON of conditioner (like, 3-4x as much as I use on my own hair) and let ponies sit for hours and hours. After I comb it out I let them sit even longer before rinsing it out. Their hair is always so soft afterwards!

Magic Erasers are great for marks. If you haven't you should try that before acetone. Its really stunning what the erasers can do. The grubbiest pony can look like a million bucks after a good scrubbing with one! They can even take marks, paint, etc off of eyes/symbols without harming them (as long as you're careful/gentle).

Magic marker worked wonders, thanks for that bit of advice.

Just to clarify, do you comb the worst of the snarls out of pony hair before soaking it in conditioner,  or just go straight to conditioner use?
And do you use straight conditioner or mix it with water first?

Thanks again.

I like to use baking soda on pony bodies, taking care of course on the painted surfaces. I wait to comb their hair if it is very tangled until I put the conditioner in. Tangles slide out so much easier! And straight conditioner. :)

I comb after conditioning so there's less damage. The conditioner makes it a lot easier, especially after soaking for a while.

I also just use straight conditioner. No water or anything like that added.

Gonna second the magic eraser on that one. Its worked miracles on a lot of my ponies. I bought a rainbow curl ringlets that had bad highlighter "make up" and other markings on her rear. Can't even tell where the make up was and the marker on the rear is barely noticable! And that was green and pink highlighter on a yellow pony!
I love art and ponies so much!!

Currently have a Daffidazey with several globs of conditioner worked into her mane, it was a complete mess when I got it. Hopefully it'll work out later today.

I'm assuming this method works on plushies as well, taking care not to get the plush wet. Bought a Build a Bear Minty yesterday, I'd like to touch up her mane eventually.

Also have a Sunny Daze whose magnet hoof keeps popping out whenever I attach it to something. Tends to stay put otherwise. Once I clean it up some, should I leave it alone or try to superglue that magnet back into her hoof?
