DreamWorks' Trolls - Love or hate the new design?

I have always loved Trolls. I had hopes for new merchandise when DreamWorks bought the rights. But when I saw them, I was rather heartbroken at how different they look from the classics. Why is the skin unusual colors as well as the hair? It kind of takes away from focusing attention on the hair.

So what say you? Do you like the overhaul? Are you looking forward to the movie? Or do you prefer the classic look?

I love the new design. I had a few of the originals as a kid and liked them okay. But I really like this new design. My husband, on the other hand, thinks they look too much like the rock trolls from Frozen, so he refuses to buy me any of the toys.

Maybe they were trying to make them a bit more similar to zelfs? Those are more colorful overall, so maybe they thought a more earthy/natural skintone wouldn't be as popular if kids had an option between that and a more colorful toy.

I really loved trolls when I was a kid, too, and I saw that Target has some merch that features the 90s trolls on it, but I was kind of hoping for a truer reboot as well. I wasn't surprised though, considering how different Popples are now, too.

same with me. They look nice to little kids but its not for me. Too "new". I loved the 90th trolls funny-freaky little faces a lot lol.

I'm not a fan of the designs at all, and the trailer really upset me. It's very clear that they spoiled the entire story in the trailer since I can easily tell that some of the scenes in the trailer are from the movie climax. >.< I hate when movies do that!

The 'siamese twin' trolls with the joined hair are just...weird...

Exactly. I liked the 90s trolls, but I'm pretty indifferent to those new ones.

I never liked the old trolls when I was a kid, because I thought they were too different from "real" trolls. Maybe that's why I like these new ones, since they're so different I don't need to care at all

I didn't like the 90s trolls as a kid, but I also don't like the new ones.  Doesn't surprise me that they're from DreamWorks, they look really DreamWorks-generic.

That said, I think the 90s trolls would be a total flop with today's kids.  So I understand why they changed them.  I just think they changed them into something underwhelming.

I actually really like the Frozen rock trolls.  These...  not so much.  But I think that's more of an issue with characters than design?

They're cute enough.  I wasn't particularly attached to the originals and I'm not particularly attached to the redesign, either.

I think it's safe to say there was a bit of inspiration from the troll dolls when Zelfs were designed, but Zelfs were never intended to be a reboot of trolls. The Australian toy company that makes Zelfs, Moose Inc., never had rights to the troll likeness or brand. According to wiki, the troll brand was owned by a Danish toy company named Dam, but Dreamworks bought worldwide rights from them in 2013.

In fact, as of this summer, Moose Inc. has announced they will not be moving forward with Zelfs anymore. I don't know if the Dreamworks movie was an influence on this decision or not, but the Zelf sales had been steadily declining for a while, and in the beginning of this year the US distributors stopped ordering them from Moose altogether, which was a big hit in their sales.

I really can't stand the new designs. I much prefer the Trolls of my childhood.

I guess I'm kind of neutral about them. I never liked the 80s or 90s trolls, I found them weird and unsettling with the naked flesh-tone bodies and all the wrinkles. I ADORE the Zelfs and am really quite disappointed that the line has ended. I have nearly sixty of the little buggers, it's been a fantastic brand even if it only ran for a few years. The Dreamworks trolls just don't appeal to me... I don't like the faces, especially the noses, and all of them seem to have been designed to be a pure stereotype, so their personalities and expressions come off as rather thin and underwhelming. The movie doesn't look like anything too spectacular either, but maybe it'll turn out alright as a complete production instead of ads.

That's what I thought too! I was really surprised when all this Troll stuff appeared and I realized they weren't actually the reboot. I never liked them enough to buy any from stores but I think Zelfs are really cute. I might track some down secondhand eventually.

As a kid I wasn't huge on the 80s or 90s Trolls. There was maybe one or two in my toybox? I like them more now and would love to own a few but I'm not a collector or anything like that. I don't watch movie trailers but I think the designs of the new Trolls are cute. I really like some of the BAB stuff that I've seen so far.
