How do you organize your collection?
« on: June 16, 2016, 04:09:27 PM »
I can't for the life of me figure out the best way to organize my ponies for display.

I like the idea of doing it by pose, as I think it looks nice to have say, all the shy pose ponies grouped together.

But I also like the idea of keeping sets together - say all flutter ponies or all so softs together.

Of course then I run into the problem of wanting to keep moms and babies together. I can't have all the shy pose girls together and leave my poor Baby Applejack and Baby Bowtie orphans! Which would happen no matter how I organize them.

So right now, I really only have a few "groups" that are together - all moms and babies in one group, all so softs together, and all flutter ponies together. But what do I do when I eventually get my hands on a SS Crumpet? I have Baby Crumpet so do they go with the so softs or the moms and babies? (Baby Crumpet is currently hanging out in the Nursery since she has no mommy yet!)

Haphazardly.  Seriously, there is very little order.

The three sets I'm trying to complete (TE, TAF and Flutter) are in a display case.. then I have themed shelves (like I have a shelf based on the Baby Firefly's Adventure book and another based on Rescue at Midnight Castle) - I have my CP ponies together..... I have the babies together with the Nursery... and everything else is just kind of as space dictates. I would like to sore the rest by pose or something... so mine are all over the place. ^^*

Mine are organized by size/type, and most are on shelf risers I made to maximize the amount of space. I have my G4 brushables, blind bags, Fashion Styles, Equestria Girls, and G3s all in separate areas, and put the larger stuff on top of the shelves. The rest is just put wherever there's room.

I have a bad feeling my poor ponies will remain in storage for a long time.  I look at my closet full of pony bins and play sets, become overwhelmed, close the door and walk away .  If I ever do get around to it, I think the majority I would display by color.  A few, like the sea ponies and flutter, I would probably group. *heads towards closet*

I only collect G4, so my large armies of the main 6 resulted in my ponies being displayed by name (so, shelf for Twilight, Pinkie, etc). Non mane 6 are displayed mostly by sets. :)

Mine are currently in storage but once my basement is developed and pony room ready I planned to display them by set. But I also have an obsession with mommies and babies so now that you mention it this is going to be a problem for me too! lol! Looks like I'm going to have a mommy and baby shelf and the adults will be missing from their other sets.

They were organized by generation, and then just random - favourites tended to get grouped together but that was about it. Since we're re-doing the room, I'm thinking to do sets/themes (like all holiday ponies today). Haven't decided if generations will be mixed or not yet.

Mine are separated by generation. I have my G1s in one dresser drawer. My G3s occupy 2 other drawers.

I sorted them by set and year once. Maybe next time by pose. I like that idea a lot because it reminds me of the last unicorn and the unicorns that were trapped in the sea.

My G1s are displayed by pose.  They seem to fit the shelves better that way and I like how they look all lined up.

My g3s live in a box, so I can't really say.  :P

I love hearing how you all organize them! Keep it coming!

Shy Violet - I like your idea of going by set but pulling out the moms and babies. But then I had the thought - "Well, I have So Softs and Deflocked So Softs, so I can't pull out a SS mom like Crumpet to put with her baby, cause then her deflocked counterpart will be lonely!"

So, I guess I need a pretty So Soft Crumpet, a deflocked Crumpet to go with her, and another deflocked Crumpet to go with Baby Crumpet? Ahhh my head hurts! (And my wallet is going to hurt paying for all these! LOL)

I have them sorted by type, and roughly by year. The first shelf is early earth ponies, next is the Y2-3 unicorn/pegasus/rainbow pony shelf, and so on. Or at least that's the idea. The organization sort of falls apart after 1988, but it's the thought that counts, right?

My collection is really small and varied, so I arrange my ponies in a way that has a nice flow to it. Generally I consider the way the different poses look and colours look together and sort them based on what looks best. :)
