My husband is always coming up with new names for the ponies, like Ducky for Quackers or Baby More Tea Mum? for Baby Crumpet.

A lot of my ponies were bought second-hand as a kid. Since I didn't have their backcards, I didn't know the names of ones that weren't featured in the cartoons.

Same with me; and I didn't even know about the cartoon, just Firefly's Adventure/Rescue At Midnight Castle. So at least Firefly and Glory and Applejack had their proper names. Sometimes I even had the pony fresh from the store and I renamed the pony. Lil Tabby became Teddy; makes a lot more sense with her symbol. I got Baby Tappy secondhand and called her Jumper. To this day I still think that name suits her perfectly -- pose and symbol and everything.

Yeah, I like Teddy & Jumper more than the official names.

Hehehe.. great nicknames! XD

As a child, I don't remember calling most ponies anything but their proper names, except two-- Locket, who I called Keyhole.. Wasn't really her nickname, I just renamed her.. I also would call baby Wiggles "Squiggles."  :P

As an adult, I call AppleJack "AJ" and Cherries Jubilee "CJ" but nothing (else) special.. :)

My husband calls Princess Sparkle "Professor Bling Bling." I'm not sure where he got that, but... it kind of stuck. XD

*snerk* Professor Bling Bling! XD

When I was a kid I thought Salty's name was dumb and I called him Tugboat, only to have someone on the arena tell me his European name is Tug.

My childhood Sweet Pop was called Popsicle, my new one has the same nickname.

My aunty bought me a Blushie at the swapmeet and at the time I didn't know who she was, my daughter suggested I call her Bouquet and when I found out her real name...she stayed Bouquet.

Hula Hula's name doesn't fit her symbol,so I named her Kalea which is a Hawaiian name that means bright.

Dazzleglow is Dazz.

I keep forgetting Firewater's name is switched, plus it flows off the tongue easier then Waterfire.

I know Mail Order Spike and I have come up with a few goofy ones on the fly while we've been cataloguing my collection, but I can't remember any of them right now.

I do call UK/Euro Princess Sparkle "Princess Glitter Bomb", though.

I got Speedy after I started collecting as a teen, but before I had the internet. I didn't know her real name so I called her "Cogs" for some reason. :)

It's nickname central round here. Tic-Tac-Toe and baby are known as Mummy T and Baby T; there's CJ and AJ, obviously; Baby Soft Steps has decided to go by the name Stepz; Dazzleglow is Dazzle; G3 Razzaroo is Razz; I could go on and on....
I share my collection with my best friend, who had a lot of second hand ponies as a child. As she didn't know their real names, they often ended up with some interesting alternatives, which have stuck. Thus Sweetstuff = Twinkles Jelly; Baby Tappy = Booties; Wind Whistler =Chris (I don't know why either). Also we bought a Tornado from Sweden, and he seems to have accidentally become known as Olaf.
Loving all the other nicknames in this thread :)

I generally go by the 'proper', and the UK ones if I can remember them. I was very confused when I saw people referring to Strawberry fair as Sugarberry. Some of the names I gave my childhood ponies stuck, like sparkleworks and starswirl were both called fireworks. I couldn't remember the names off of the box! Generally, though, it's the regular names for me. It's a challenge to remember them all. I'm not very good at it.

I would so call Sweet Pop "Popsicle" if I had her as part of my childhood herd!
