Pony Shrinkage???
« on: February 06, 2016, 11:22:18 AM »
So I got another Boysenberry Pie the other day. And I thought something was off! She seemed smaller than what I was used to and also rock hard. So I took out my first Boysenberry, who is nice and squishy to compare. And there is a noticeable difference in size!
I was wondering if anyone has also seen this? I find it very interesting and would like to know more! I figure its gotta do with plasticizer breakdown or something of the like. (tho I have some TEs that are just as rock hard and haven't shrunk!)

Is the mane and tail length the same or are they short too?

I wonder if it's a really good fakie.  Like someone made it with a 3D printer based on the pony, but made a slight scaling error.  Because it's a perfect miniaturization.

Are they both the same country?  Even then they could be different factories if I remember right, it looks like one has s slightly more orange tone in her hair, but I'm on my phone so I can't tell if it's just my phone lol.

I actually had a Boysenberry Pie that was just like this. From what I hear, this can be an effect of plasticizer breakdown. When the chemical that makes the vinyl soft leeches out, it leaves the pony hard and, from what I've heard, it can actually cause shrinkage. I have another pony, Curly Locks, that is getting rather hard, and she seems a bit more compact than usual.

Can anyone back this up?

OH OH I CAN BACK YOU UP REANNA!  It is indeed from the plasticizer leakage (which is also why she's rock hard).  You can force this process with acetone (it can be used to shrink Monster High doll heads as seen here: http://www.dirili.com/mh/shrinkop.html

I've been wondering if it would shrink a pony also (as they're a similar soft vinyl), and I'm glad you both have anecdotal evidence for it, as it makes perfect sense.  Now the exact chemical process I'm not sure on (I didn't make it past Intro to Chem 3 in college), but this seems to be the culprit!

Oh good. Glad to have some solid backup on this as I was fairly sure, but never like to say anything for sure on my own. :)

How interesting! I have ponies in my herd that are rock hard from plasticizer leaking, but I don't have duplicates of them so I never thought of comparing them for size differences. Neat!

Hmm, I don't have another one to compare, but I did think my hard as a rock Chief seemed a little small and delicate for a big brother pony. Very interesting!

Question... why is the paint not affected if its shrinking? It's weird it stays the same when surface is different
