I know my pictures are terrible. Plus I've been having so many accidents because my depth perception is damaged. I was a little scared to burn myself again. The one next to the purple is chartreuse for sure. I'll probably end up selling them or putting them in a swap. My daughter tends to just untie them repeatedly.

Ribbons can be so tricky!  I would suggest starting with the US G1 backcards.  They usually show the right ribbon color.  You might have to check other resources to get the right shade, but at least it would be a start.

Also, the nice thing is that you can visually look at all the ponies from a set at once instead of hopping from entry to entry on My Little Wiki or such.

Year 2:

Rainbow ponies: http://mylittlewiki.org/w/images/7/75/StarshineBackcard.jpg
Sea ponies: http://mylittlewiki.org/w/images/0/0d/SealightBackcard.jpg

Year 3

Regular ponies: http://mylittlewiki.org/w/images/b/b0/CherriesJubileeBackcard.jpg
Baby ponies (Baby Firefly, etc):  http://mylittlewiki.org/w/images/8/8d/BabyFireflyBackcard.jpg
Sea ponies (2nd set): http://mylittlewiki.org/w/images/6/6c/SeaBreezeBackcard.jpg
Rainbow ponies (2nd set): http://mylittlewiki.org/w/images/6/64/TickleBackcard.jpg
Baby Sea ponies: http://mylittlewiki.org/w/images/8/8b/SeaShimmerBackcard.jpg

The colors did "repeat" between ponies, so it's possible for two ponies to have identical ribbon colors.

What a  great idea to check the backcards!

Sorry to ask the stupid question but I have wondered for a while now....

How can you tell it's an original ribbon and not just a replacement?

I ask as I hate the ribbons (sorry  it's mainly because I am terrible at tying them so they just irritate me) anyway so I usually don't bother with them and have a bag of loose ribbons ( em...and brushes too which I also don't care for, sorry again ).  Would just hate to think that I may have ribbons that someone else may want but have no clue.

You could always post a pic of them on here. EBay has the brushes. I just wish they'd let me raopk.

Hi Tzan19! A while back I did a thread about IDing original ribbons. It's not foolproof but it may help:

Looking for CF Minty, excellent condition! (and maybe Snuzzle and Blue Belle)

Wow. You know your ribbon. I can only tell because my mom's a seamstress. They don't use the same material to make ribbons anymore. The length end cuts and lack of fraying makes them stick out, too.

Oh wow thanks for that valeofspring.  Very interesting and I have to say although I'm not a fan personally even I have to admit that they are beautiful and your ponies look lovely with all their ribbons.  You can very much see the difference in quality and the originals appear to be extremely well made.  On a side note looking at mine now I think they are more than likely imposters however I will know what to look for in future  :)
