Can anything be done to repair sliced vinyl?
« on: November 19, 2015, 03:25:09 PM »
It really looks as though someone took a knife to the Sky Hopper that I got last weekend (as well as drawing on her and possibly stabbing her eyes with a pen).  She has cuts that go all the way through the vinyl.  Is there a way to fix these so she looks decent?  Or is she pretty much bait?

(She's my first adult sparkle pony, and I'd like to save her if I can.)

I already know I'll have to take her apart to deal with a rusty washer and other interior marks, if it's worth trying to restore her.

That poor girl... :( Makes me sad to see a pretty pony like Star Hopper treated like that... I don't know that there's any way to completely repair or hide the damage. I suppose you could do what you can to clean her up and love her flaws and all, or you could go a creative route, hiding them with clothes, bandages, etc. She'll never be perfect again but with a little bit of work she could definitely be happier, prettier pony. Maybe someone else has some ideas, but damage from stabbing and slicing for the most part can just be hidden.

Cleaning any dirt/grime out of the cuts will make them less visible.  Other than that, I am not sure much can be done once the plastic is damaged, particularly for the ponies with translucent bodies.

What about a thick clear glue of sorts? Could that help?

I was wondering about something like that, too.

Maybe if you glued and pressed the areas together it'd seal it up?

Or clear epoxy? It dries in five minutes, cures in 24 hours. Could that be used?

Might as well try it, for science! Star Hopper is never going to be mint again, anyway, and you might get neat results.
I'll put something here some time

Agreed - never hurts to try! If it doesn't work / help you could always just hide with pony outfits!

What kind of glue do you think would be good?  I have Mod Podge and E-6000 on hand.  Would one of those work?

Even if gluing her turns out well, I think I may end up customizing her a bit, since she has some pen marks (from stab wounds) that have seeped all the way through the vinyl and just are not going to come out.     Poor pony...

I would think anything that could easily be applied into the "wounds" and then have any excess wiped away cleanly so it doesn't leave any marks. :) Mod Podge dries really clear and it seems like it wouldn't be as harsh. Of the two, I'd try that one, but again, someone else might be better informed than me. :)

I glued the worst cut (the one near her symbol; it's actually two cuts made right next to each other) with some Mod Podge.  That, in conjunction with cleaning the dirt out of it, made it less noticeable (the glittery body helps with that, too), although you can definitely still feel it when you run your finger over it.  I think I'll do the same with the other cuts.  I've pretty much decided that I'm going to do some customizing to cover up the pen marks on her feet and legs, but I think she'll turn out to be a pretty nice pony with a bit of work.  :good:

Wow, cool! Do you think you could show us some pictures of her after you've had some work done? I'd like to see how it turned out. :)
