Seeking Music Composition Software Recommendations
« on: November 15, 2015, 08:38:30 PM »
As the title asks, anyone here musically inclined that can recommend some beginner friendly, preferably free, music making programs? I don't know the first thing about the field so google is overwhelming me.

I'm trying to seek out a new hobby, and music has always been the talent I wish I had. Thanks to my job, I get to sit in on a handful of concerts/performances, which has been inspiring me to take a shot at composing something. Of course, I don't have access to any real instruments at the moment, nor a quiet place to practice, so a computer program seems the way to go.

Thanks for any help.

The first thing that popped up was Miku.  I 'think' the software to create music is free? Maybe?

I don't think that's quite what you are after though.  Wish I could help out :(

I use Finale Notepad for arrangements. It's free and everything. I'm terrible, because I really don't even know what exactly limits it so much from paid versions. I've never had anything above Notebook (which was a version that came with my Music Theory textbook, or something).

My husband is in the music industry..I should know programs off the top of my head because all of the computers I've ever been on around him are littered in them lol. The only one that comes to mind is garage band. It may not be free though.

I've been meaning to look into getting some free or cheap-ish software, too. My brother knows a lot more about what software is out there than I do -- I'll see about asking him. :) I know he recommended something to me a while back -- it might have been Finale?

My husband runs a website for old PC game MIDI music so I asked him, since he spends a lot of time editing and rearranging MIDI files, and he said:

"Cubase or Logic or ProTools or something like that. A lot of free stuff too, she should check that before she dumps a bunch of cash."

By Miku, I'm assuming you mean Vocaloids melodys_angel?
