Not sure what to do - non pony sale
« on: October 18, 2015, 05:43:43 PM »
Hi all!
6 months ago, I sold a set of DVD's that I had watched once and had no use for. I tested them in my DVD player, confirmed they all worked and sent them to the winner.

Yesterday, he gets in touch and says one set isn't working.
It's been 6 whole months (I sold them early April).

Do I need to do anything, or is this pure tough luck for the buyer?

I'd say something like "I'm sorry, but I checked all DVD's before mailing them, and as it's been 6 months, I don't really feel there's anything for me to do about this.  Have you tried getting the DVD polished?"  Because honestly, it's not like you know what they've been doing to the disc, the DVD could have just gotten scratched or something.  Stores won't take DVDs back after a few weeks, after all; why should you?

It might be an issue with their player as well.  I work in a library and people tell us all the time that brand new DVDs (they're the first person to check them out) don't work in their player but they work just fine in the ones we have.

It's been six months.  I know when I buy a DVD (new or used from the internet or retail store) I watch it as soon as possible (definitely within the first month that I have it).   Stores won't take anything back after 90 days so I don't understand why they would expect an individual seller to do so.  A lot can happen to a disc in six months.  I let my sister borrow some DVDs for her kids to watch and they completely scratched them up in a week (which is why I don't let them borrow them anymore).  So I'd tell the buyer that they didn't identify the issue in a timely manner and they're out of luck.

I had someone on Amazon try to return a textbook i sold after 6 months. You could have easily gotten all your use of the book for a class in that amount of time. 6 months is ridiculous amount of time to have something than try to return. You don't owe this guy anything.

Good grief! I will never get some buyers. Anyways you said it has been since April, so depending on the exact date in April, the buyer has 6 months to file a claim through Paypal. If you are past this I would tell him tough noogies, he has had ample time to make sure the DVDs worked.

I would contact him back and kindly tell them that they are way past the return window, and you cannot accept a return.  I would also state "sorry for any inconveniences this may have caused"... etc. for prosperity.

It might be this. I bought a box set and half of the DVDs worked, half didn't. You could nicely suggest they get in contact with the manufacturer.

But really, there isn't anything you need to do for them.
