The Art of Equestria
« on: October 09, 2015, 01:38:11 PM »
A few years ago Abrams Books released a book about the history of Transformers. I've been waiting for them to do a MLP book ever since. Now it's coming!  :frolic:

https://www.yahoo.com/tv/ss/little-pony-concept-art-183621585/photo-pony-evolution-1444416092117.html

http://www.amazon.com/My-Little-Pony-Art-Equestria/dp/1419715771/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1444422888&sr=8-1&keywords=The+Art+of+Equestria

I wish the title was more G1 related. And the time line (slide 4 in first link) has a glaring omission....  :what: Anybody seen anything else about this book?

Yes! It was announced a while ago, I love art books so I'm beyond excited for this.

I don't see why it's title should be G1 related, because overall the focus is G4. It's a shame G2 was left from the timeline though, but I think G2 was considered a bit of a failure? Plus it's never been mentioned in the G4 pitches or has any inspiration drawn from it. Which begs why G3.5 was included, maybe because it's so recent and familiar and includes characters that transferred to G4.

Um, yeah, G2!! It was way popular internationally, even if it kinda flopped here in the US!

Anyway, I need this book!!

This book looks interesting.  I do wish there was mention of G2, but I agree with Bekuno.  G3 and 3.5 had more influence than 1 and 2 on G4.

My guess is because G2 had no cartoon to go with it.

Poor G2. I'm guessing it was left out since it flopped here in the US? Still kinda weird not to put it on the timeline at all, though.

Wow. That's a shame about G2s not being in the timeline. :/ I wasn't a big fan on them when they were in stores, but... they are important like any other generation. ( I guess if it's just related to cartoons it makes sense...).

I think it's cute that the one illustration calls the body of a pony "bean". :)

Disappointing that it isn't all-gen inclusive like the Transformers Vault, and even though its longer than Transformers, it doesn't have as many color illustrations which is odd for an art book. Makes me wonder if Hasbro even has much squirrelled away in the archives for early MLP.

I'm still interested to see what it says, but I'll have to flip through it first before deciding whether it's worth buying.

Since the book seems to be specifically about developing the G4 cartoon, and there has never seemed to be any inspiration from G2 there, it makes some sense not to mention it.

There was actually a big leak of animation assets two, three weeks ago, mostly from Season 1 development, so there's definitely stuff out there that should be includable in this book. The images from the Yahoo preview look like they're even earlier than that, though... pretty cool.
(Fun fact from the leak: there are files that make it look like Electric Sky, a seemingly random blind bag pony from some years ago, was actually an earlier version of Colgate/Minuette before they changed her colors a bit more and gave her an hourglass cutie mark instead.)

Will have to pick this one up! I love concept art.
It's sad that G2 is forgotten once again though. Since they are talking about the evolution of pony designs, they should have had it in the timeline.
It's not like G2 had no animation at all either. The commercials were the first to use 3D animation and the pc game was 2D animated. It just feels like Hasbro wants to forget G2 ever happened. A while back they left the gen out of one of their own timelines too. Stupid because G2 was a great gen.
Also amused that they called G1 ponies "chunkier". G1 ponies just look more like actual ponies, guys.
