Mystery Marks on FT Baby North Star
« on: August 28, 2015, 02:35:40 AM »
I recently bought a small lot of ponies that were in surprisingly good condition for being labeled a bait lot. Baby North Star was among them, and she's in nice shape except for a bit of tail rust, some paint rubbing on her tooth, and these strange orange-brown spots on her right side:

I'm not sure what these spots could be. Since she does have tail rust, my first thought was that the spots might be caused by rust as well, but I'm not 100% certain.

Anyone else have any ideas?

looks like rust spots or pony cancer to me. (though cancer usually ahs a dot in the middle as well)
open her up and check her insides! also, did you try scrubbing them with any kind of cleaning agent? Acetone? ( would guess yes since she seems to be on a sink :) )

Hmm!  :wonder: Looks like it could be rust stains... Put some whitening toothpaste (regular paste - not the gel kind) mixed with water and baking soda on the spots.. massage it in, then apply more and leave it alone for a few hours (even overnight wouldn't be bad) and see..  :) If it doesn't come off, try a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.. (be careful not to get it on any kind of paints like eyes, symbols, etc.!) If it still doesn't come off, then I don't know what else to tell ya..  >_<

I actually did try rubbing those spots with a Magic Eraser, but it didn't seem to make any difference. I'll try taking her head off to see how it is inside.

Ah ok!

Yeah, I don't like taking heads off unless it's absolutely necessary!   If it won't come off, then most likely age spots.. mold has a circular bull's eye look it it and is typically black.

You can try to wrap her in aluminum foil and leave a hole over the marks. Then put her in the sun for a month. I think they might fade, although if they are age spots they will come back. But if it is just stains they will not :)

Good tip! If you try this, let us know how it goes! I personally have never tried it yet..

Well, I didn't find anything noteworthy inside Baby North Star aside from a few rust flakes and a rusty tail washer (which I replaced), so it looks like I'll have to try the sunfading method (which is just as well, since there's a stubborn pen marking under one of her hooves that I couldn't remove).

Thanks for the tips!

I would go with the sun fading as well - it doesnt look like age marks but more like stains. Hopefully she is fixable for you :) Let us know how you get on.

Seconding stains - could be contact stains from any number of things - some other rusty toy, paint, dye transfer, old marker marks, etc.  Shape and color is wrong for vinyl deterioration / age spots.

It's been a while, but I tried sunfading Baby North Star for about a month, and it really helped! The orange marks (as well as the pen mark under her hoof) are almost completely gone now. Thanks again for the advice, everyone!
