I read it when I was a kid. I remember liking it at the time but I could not give a review now without reading it again.
I would definitely like to read it again.

I love the book. It doesn't read like a native English book but I enjoy the way it is translated, it has a poetry to it that appeals to me (I don't read or speak German, I just like the way things are worded). I've only read one other book by Michael Ende, "Momo," but it also reads as a very metaphorical magical tale. I like books that have an old-fashioned moral core and by that I don't mean old-fashioned values per se but the old-fashioned idea that books should teach a moral and not just tell a story.

One of my favorite things about the book when I first read it (borrowed from the library) was the red and green printing Honeycomb mentioned. The first copy I purchased didn't have it and I was sorely disappointed but the copy I have now does and it really adds to the magic in my mind.
If wishes were horses, they'd be My Little Ponies.

I have heard that too-  one of my best friends is German and she was saying the two colors (as you switch back and forth between worlds) was a pretty cool aspect....   apparently the book gets into the kid's real life a little more.  I am definitely going to get it from the library at some point! (Or maybe buy a used copy from amazon...)

It definitely gets into Bastian's life more. His relationship with his father is explored and the repercussions of his taking the book too. Bastian has to learn a lot about himself and you get to see how it will shape his life in our world which is, to me, one of the best parts of the book.

One of my favorite childhood books and films, still are to this day. I always wanted to improve my German, to be able to read it in that language.

My favourite book ever! I love it.

What I particularly like about it is Bastian's journey mirrors how I would interact with books as a child and even sometimes now as an adult. I'd tell you more, but it involves comprehensive spoilers.

But it's fun!

It's a bit like Charles Perrault's Sleeping Beauty - the 'waking up' part is just the midway point of the story. It covers what happens next.

I havent read it, but typically books are better then movies :)

Not always. I didn't like the second Jurassic Park book and I wasn't enthused with most of the How To Train Your Dragon books.

I have the book, and read it about three times a year.  It's MUCH better than the three movies.  The first and second movie tie in.. sort of, the third, not at all related.

When I looked for the book on amazon they had an exact replica of the book from the movies, but it was the book and I was like , but it wasn't available.  I can imagine it would probably be pretty expensive anyway.

Yes, show pics.  I heard about people being able to ride Falkor a long time ago.

*is jealous* lol how amazing :D

Ive read the book too when I was a child, then again when I was a teen and then again a few years ago. I liked it a lot but I remember it being pretty heavy to hold.

Btw, I have a spare german version (bound version, white dust cover), if anyone is interested, let me know :)

I thought I had them already digitalized, but no!!! It was in 1992, and the paper photos still need to be scanned. Right now they are back home in Germany. :( I know I also have a photo of the original book from the movie.
