Milliput for sculpting on customs?
« on: July 08, 2015, 10:09:55 AM »
Has anyone ever used milliput for sculpting on customs?  It seems like most folks use apoxie sculpt, or super sculpey (is that true?), and I'm wondering if milliput might be too rigid?

I have both milliput and sculpey sitting around I could use, so I'm tempted to use either of them, but I wonder if I should bit the bullet and just buy some apoxie sculpt.

I'm about to try sculpting on a custom for the first time and I want to DO IT RIGHT, lol!

Not sure as I have never used other than Fimo and Apoxie. Giving this a small bump in hopes that someone else knows better. :)

Thanks for the bump!  If I don't hear anything I might just try it out on a spare bait pony.

I've used milliput :) I didn't like it much - it may have been from an older batch, but I found it a bit more crumbly than apoxie, it didn't smooth as easily and hold details as well, and it definately sagged during the dry time and there was some definite shrinking. I also remember it being very very messy - not as messy as an airdry clay, but still pretty bad in comparison to apoxie.

If you're using milliput, make sure it's fresh, buy from a supplier that has a high turnover - stuff that's sat around for too many years either at home or on a store shelf is crappy to work with - crumbly and dry.  There's also the super fine white which has a less grainy texture.

Personally I'd stick to apoxie and the two part green stuff for miniature modelling (yellow/blue) which is very flexible.  Milliput has very little flex once hardened, which may or may not be a good thing depending on what you're making. Very thin pieces of it also tend to break easily.  I use my milliput mostly for casting pieces and bases.
